[sword-devel] Adding local modules to Bishop (Android 13.0)
Hi, I have not been able to add local modules to Bishop. I use the dialogue to add the modules, which results with no modules added, but no error message. I am using zip files saved from the Crosswire website. I am not sure how to debug this, but I can do so if told. I'm back after a week. My wife gave birth. I would like to thank David Haslam for his recent discussions on the sword-utilities in Windows. This is exactly the problem that I have with building our projects module which we really want to make available online. In regards to the section headings. AndBible, Eloquent, PocketSword, BPBible, BibleDesktop, Alkitab all work fine with the headings as created in -r2679. This means that it is only Xiphos that cannot display the headings. I assumed this would mean that Xiphos has the bug, but I was told in my bug request that the problem is in sword. Here I am told that the problem is in my osis. The good news is that my supervisor has agreed that we will just forge ahead and submit our module to sword and to disregard the errors in Xiphos (just not encourage the use of it). However, I would like to make one last attempt to see if there is something I can do on my part to get it fixed. In Issue 18, Troy Griffitts told me to upload a snippet of my osis so that it could be examined. I hope someone can help me identify something I might have wrong. [sword-devel] OSIS is ready (97% sure)
My language project is very close to being ready to electronically publish our scripture through sword. I have created an osis file which validates and has no untransformed USFM markers. I have ran the fixtitle script over the osis file. I have a .conf file and a locale file ready. I have created modules using two versions of osis2mod (using Windows versions available here: http://www.crosswire.org/ftpmirror/pub/sword/utils/win32/) and checked them in the various frontends. These are the two versions I used: sword-utilities-1.6.2-r2673.zip and sword-utilities-1.6.1-r2578.zip. These are the problems I have ran into: If I use the most current version (1.6.2-r2673) My headings do not show up at all in Xiphos. This is true whether I use the fixtitle script on the osis or not. Also in Xiphos and in Pocketsword there is a double line break between paragraphs. If I use the previous version (1.6.1-r2578) My headings now display fine in Xiphos. However, in Xiphos, Pocketsword, and AndBible the first verse number of new paragraphs is displayed on a line of its own. The text of the verse then follows on the next line. These visual hiccups don't look good in the eyes of our project manager who will give the final go signal on publishing. (Bible translators tend to be perfectionists, which I am thankful for). Is there something that I can do on my end with my current osis file in order to fix these issues? Should I submit the OSIS files now and see if the crosswire team's created module might fix these problems (there is a high chance that the linux version of osis2mod is working better than the windows)? It is also possible that these are all bugs that I need to register with the various frontends. Please advise. [sword-devel] More questions regarding osis/module making woes
I've seen it mentioned on the wiki that jsword does not read the x-preverse correctly so that it places a number before the heading. Is there anyway to make that show up correctly in jsword? Why does ESV get it correctly? My guess is that ESV might be imported from thtml and not osis? Also I registered a bug with xiphos over a year ago that the headings at beginning of chapters don't show. I missed the e-mail where the developer asked for a copy of my osis and module and so the bug is now closed. The developer said he couldn't reproduce the problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem with xiphos? I find it strange that enabling or disabling header within xiphos doesn't actually have any affect on my headers. They appear to be hard-coded into the text. My boss is looking for perfection on this publishing and I am no where close to being able to deliver. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I will include a small portion of my osis from the beginning of a chapter. The osis was originally exported from Bibledit and now I'm making manual edits to tweak things in order for it to work. I looked through ubuntu and crosswire repositories and found nothing. I searched google for what Sword.pm might be and found nothing. I'm now trying to guess what future issues I might have that aren't documented. I am unclear on what it is that I might need to edit in the xreffix.pl in order to adapt it for my file (as mentioned in previous e-mails). -In usfm the majority of our cross references are found using the parallel reference marker /r. -Also, since our locale is for a minority language and has just newly been created, where will I need to have that file in order to make it work with the script? Right now I'm guessing that it should be put in the same file as xreffix.pl, but I can imagine it needing to be with the other system locales. I'm hoping that I am very close. I'm fearing that once I've done all of this, it still won't appear correctly in various sword front-ends and I will have to start over. Here is the answer to Peter's question, I'm using xmllint with osisCore.2.1.1.xsd as my schema. Also about the language I am creating for, it is not yet in the sword project, but I have a local locale here on my computer that I have created. The below output is what comes out when I have left a footnote in only one of the section titles. I noticed that our Bible has 6 section titles with footnotes and that only the 3 that were at the beginning of chapters were getting flagged as invalid. I was able to fix two by moving the footnote to the same word used in the first verse of the chapter. So far I don't have any great solutions for what to do with this footnote from Genesis 40. [sword-devel] Question about verses combined in USFM and in OSIS
I also want to ask again about multiple verses that have been combined into one verse i.e. Genesis 1:6-7. Bibledit complains about the usfm formatting of \v 6-7. However, in the USFM User Reference PDF disributed by paratext this is a common format for usfm encoding and is used multiple times in their examples. Then when I look at the osis 2.1 user manual for March 2006, pg 15 it clearly represents a way to do this as well: verse sID=Esth.1.1-Esth.1.2 osisID=Esth.1.1 Esth.1.2 n=1-2/ King Xerxes of Persia lived in his capital city of Susa and ruled one hundred twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia. verse eID=Esth.1.1-Esth.1.2/ Sadly, the end result is that if I try to validate osis that includes this formatting, it is considered invalid. The solution I have been using to make this work in GoBible and to avoid the error warnings in Bibledit is to create an empty verse 7 for GoBible file or in my sword project module to leave the text without a vs 7. This allows me to validate, but it makes our published text and our electronic text different and could give the appearance to people using the electronic version that we have deleted parts of God's Word. Any known solution that is better than this? After 1 1/2 years of waiting we have finally gotten past all textual issues for publishing our translated Bible into the Sword Format. Now I need to get past all technical issues so that we can put it out. History: I have used probably 4 different ways to produce Bible modules for Sword. 1) Bibledit (my favorite, because it seems quite easy) Issues: If I am not mistaken it hard codes Bible references and Title names into the verses. 2) Paratext-Pathway export to Sword 3) Export from Paratext to OSIS. Then use xmltogbs to create module. 4) Robert H.'s script to convert to OSIS and then sword (I may have lost a couple of verses using this method, but I can't say that with certainty.) Problems: Why when I do the Bibledit export do footnotes show up easily in xiphos, but not at all in eloquent. (ESV does not have this problem)? Pocketsword: shows a header at the beginning and end of a text (again ESV does not have this problem)? How do I avoid hard coded bible verse references? My overall question is what ways have you found to be the most effective module creating methods? What would you recommend? I have read the various instructions for doing this over and over again and I have created this file so many times and in so many different ways that currently I am feeling quite disoriented with the process. [sword-devel] Help/Volunteer needed to make minor changes to AlKitab Program
I know that this is a lot to ask, but ask and you shall receive, so I'll try. I am a week and a half away from a biannual conference of great importance to the work that we do. I am trying to get a language (with over a million speakers) website ready to be published before the conference so that we can share the scriptures with the participants in both GoBible and sword format. I would like to be able to provide AlKitab as a download from the website with the language module already installed. I understand that AlKitab can be used portable and I would like to have the portable app .exe be the one that is downloaded from the site. I would also like to strike the words Bible Study from the title bar of the program. And if it wouldn't be digging too much it would be nice to make the two or so places that AlKitab says Biblical Works, say Scriptural Works (this is not priority). Bible is not an acceptable word in our cultural context but AlKitab is. I am not too knowledgeable about recompiling .exe files and that is why I'm hoping someone would help. [sword-devel] BPBible's handling of alternative versification
Hey Jon, I like BPBible a lot! The portability of it is really nice. The entire Bible is correct in BPBible until 3 John. 3 John is correct as well, but the last verse is left off. The last verse is then displayed at the beginning of Jude before the book introduction. The first heading becomes verse one and all of the verses are off by one verse. After Revelation 12 the verses are all off by two. Hope that helps. [sword-devel] Sword 1.6.x and various frontends
I'm slowly but surely working on getting our translation's electronic bible published. I can only install the file into Xiphos when I have it unzipped. It installs into BPBible Porteable fine from the Zip file. I cannot install it at all into Alkitab or Bibledesktop. XULrunner recognizes the file I installed from Xiphos. Alkitab and Bibledesktop do not. After several hours of trying to figure this out, I decided I would go here for help. Are several of the frontends for SWORD not capable of using Sword 1.6.x? I came to this hypothesis because my translation requires NRSV versification and I used the most current sword to make it. These are the steps I took: - I exported from Paratext to OSIS. - I used the most current OSIS2Mod. - I configured it to use NRSV's versification and rawtext - I manually created .config file - I manually setup a zip file to work with this. Please give me any tips I might be missing here. I need to send the file on to my boss. It is very informative to know that it is only 2 verses. That would give good reason to switch to KJV versification for Sword modules. Also thanks for the info especially on java based front-ends. XulSword and Xiphos are installing it and gets the versification correct, expect for the header gets lost for Revelations 12. I don't know why that happened. Finally, it still is a bit frustrating that even using KJV versification the java based front-ends don't recognize the Bible mod I made using the latest osis2mod where the osis was derived from Paratext export. [sword-devel] MDF/SFM Dictionary Import into Sword Format
Does anyone with a basic knowledge of programming see any merit in the following idea? Make a script that takes basic components of a dictionary and formats it alphabetically into the sword imp format. The imp format being as follows: $$$word in another language Definition or gloss of word immediately below. The dictionary format being the standard used by Bible translators, called MDF (Manual for Dictionary Formatting?) and adapted in the SIL's program Fieldworks. My idea of a script would be to allow the user to input the backslash codes into the script for the word, sense number, part of speech, definition, example sentence, example sentence translated. In our dictionary these codes would be: \lc, \sn, \ps, \ge, \xv, \xe but in others dictionaries they would want the ability to adapt the backslash codes a little since often Fieldworks gives backslash codes that include the language name. The script would then output a file in imp format. The file would look like this: $$$Word [Part of speech] [Definition] (1st sense of word) [Example Sentence] [Example Sentence translation] [Part of speech] [Definition] (2nd sense of word [Example Sentence] [Example Sentence translation] etc. It seems to me like this is very basic programming. It also seems to me that if someone really go into the project they could do a lot more than what I just described. Finally I find this beneficial, because most of the Bible translation teams for minority languages are working on dictionaries at the same time. For people like the group I work with, the dictionary is valued more than the Bible. It is easy to get the Bibles into Sword format. If this script were made it would be easy to get dictionaries into sword format (at least in their most basic form). Having the two distributed together allows interaction between both works. It helps younger people in the language understand the deeper words of their language. Any programmers out their interested? [sword-devel] Help with versification
My wife and I are team members of a minority Bible translation that we have received permission to proceed with the final stages of preparing a SWORD module for and a GoBible module. I don't completely understand how versification works. In the Sword module things work pretty well. Our translation of Matthew 1 has verse numberings that go like this: 1, 2-6, 7-11, 12-16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25. In Sword it is currently displayed like this: 1, 2, 7, 12, 17, 18, etc. It would be preferable if I could get it to display like the first set, but that isn't so big of a problem. However in GoBible I have a major problem because it displays like this: 1,2 (represents 2-6), 3 (represents 7-11), 4 (represents 12-16), 5 (17), 6 (18), and so on. Did I make myself clear? Is there anything I can do to keep the GoBible looking pretty but not have people look for a certain verse reference and find out that it is several verses off because of how we have combined some verses due to translation practice? Hi all, In the course of getting serious about learning Bible verses and passages, I decided I needed a method of choosing Bible verses and putting together schemes, and that other people could benefit from this. I couldn't find much that was freely available and met all my needs, so I've written a project to help me do this, and published the (unfinished) results here: http://lukeplant.me.uk/bibleverses/index.html Basic outline: - Use a set of YAML documents to define: - verses with categories and comments - topics - schemes - Pull all these together using Python scripts - Use Sword, via Python bindings, to grab the actual Bible verse where it hasn't been included in the YAML - Output web pages I've come up with a huge number of topics that I'd like to cover, and I'm not done, and I've realised I could use some help in filling it out with actual Bible verses. The main help I'm looking for is verses to be added to the YAML documents -- there are huge gaps and many obvious and important passages missed out -- but any other improvements would be welcome too. The code is all available from that site (for the moment, via Mercurial and Mercurial web interface only, with links for the main YAML documents). It's a bit rough around the edges, but there is a README etc which should be enough to get going. I haven't put a licence file anywhere in it yet, but I intend to release under BSD or possibly public domain to make this as widely useful as possible. Best regards, Luke P.S. Hi, I've been trying to use Sword with Python bindings to simply get a list of verses with a reference like Genesis 1:1-10. All the example code I can find, including code I have written in the past, uses a dynamic cast: 1) VerseKey::ParseVerseList() is used, which returns a ListKey* 2) A dynamic cast is done to return a VerseKey* 3) Then VerseKey::UpperBound() and VerseKey::LowerBound() are used in iterating over the verses. The problem is, I can't work out how to do step 2) or equivalent in Python. I'm using the standard Python bindings, built from sword-1.5.9/bindings/swig/ Help would be much appreciated. Just a wild guess that the p.../p is causing the note to be rendered as empty. IMHO, having the entire note surrounded by p is unnecessary and probably will introduce unwanted whitespace. The problem with stripping it is that sometimes notes in Calvin's commentaries can be several paragraphs long, I believe. Stripping out any markup inside a note should be a last resort, IMO. If the frontend wants to do that, there is nothing stopping them, but requiring it of the module source doesn't seem to make sense. In KJV, we don't seem to have a number, just a 'type'. The KJV preserved the type attribute from the previous edition. There were no n attributes, so none were created. The 'raw' output shows the 'type' as 'type=n' Actually, this is a magic value created by the Sword engine. It is set to 'x' if it the type is a cross-reference and 'n' otherwise. - it's obviously using the 'n' that goes with the note number. BTW, in OSIS (and I think that it got it from TEI), the n attribute is used for the number to be shown. It could be something other than digits. Sword does not look at the value, but manufactures it's own. JSword uses it if present, creating it's own when not. In the Calvin module, the values of 'n' are straight from the ThML sources, and ThML also borrows its definition of note from TEI. My thml2osis.xslt code does no translation of the note tag -- it just uses all the existing attributes. Once there is concensus about how this should work I'll update the module. In BibleTime, which is the only frontend I have installed at the moment (apart from my own Kio-Sword, which doesn't handle notes at all), notes are rather tricky -- it is next to impossible to get the contents to show up at all, you have to mess around selecting the text (can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?). It would be great to have docs for this kind of thing. My biggest frustration with the Sword project is finding documentation -- I can't even find generated API docs for Sword, the only ones I have I generated myself (I think) using doxygen several years ago. Searching through source code to find answers to these questions is very far from ideal (and impossible if you don't read C++/Java/whatever), as is trying to search mailing list archives which are usually out of date. Hi all, I did some more work on this, and I reckon I'm ready for public testing. Changes include: - list of books in the .conf, as suggested by someone on the list - fixed the book of Psalms, Zechariah and Malachi, which had slightly different ThML, causing them to import incorrectly. - a couple of fixes to the source of John 1, which I've also sent upstream (CCEL) as ThML patches. All of the links below remains as they were, they have been updated with new files. For the impatient, it should just be a matter of getting the .osis.bz2 and the .conf, bunzipping it and running osis2mod: osis2mod ...something/modules/comments/zcom/calvinscommentaries calvinscommentaries.versified.osis 0 2 3 Obviously, there may still be errors, but there is no way I can check all of it, and everything I've come across so far now seems to be in order, and I've been enjoying using it myself :-) Regards, Luke Hi all, I've created a module that combines all of Calvin's commentaries. It is an OSIS module, which I've generated from CCEL's ThML sources, using XSLT and various python scripts etc. osis2mod doesn't yet support OSIS commentaries very well (it requires them to be marked up like Bibles), so, after some messing around, I've added a stage into the scripts to 'versify' the OSIS -- hopefully that will be removed at some point. All my scripts etc. are in the swordtools Subversion repository. One thing I have noticed, and I think it is a bug with osis2mod -- where a line starts with whitespace, all the leading whitespace is removed, which means that if the line before didn't end with whitespace, two words now get joined together. For an example, search for eloquent by nature, but when in calvinscommentaries.versified.osis, and see the corresponding words in Gen 3:1, where you will find whenSatan. I've done some more checking, trying to add whitespace at the *end* of the line, and it still doesn't work -- you simply can't break a sentence up over multiple lines without words getting merged. Hi all, I've created a module that combines all of Calvin's commentaries. It is an OSIS module, which I've generated from CCEL's ThML sources, using XSLT and various python scripts etc. osis2mod doesn't yet support OSIS commentaries very well (it requires them to be marked up like Bibles), so, after some messing around, I've added a stage into the scripts to 'versify' the OSIS -- hopefully that will be removed at some point. All my scripts etc. are in the swordtools Subversion repository. [sword-devel] Calvin's commentaries, and ThML to OSIS conversion
Hi all, I've been trying to create a Sword module containing all of Calvin's commentaries, using the ThML sources from CCEL. I've made good progress, and some of my work should be reusable for other projects. I've read that Sword is trying to move away from ThML to OSIS, so the module will be an OSIS module. I've been careful to remove any manual editing, so that everything can be generated automatically from the ThML (in case of any updates to the the sources). The main steps are: 1) Make some corrections to the ThML (use of scripCom tag in particular) - DONE (implemented using Python script) 2) Combine all the ThML files into a single ThML source - DONE (Python) 3) Convert to OSIS. I've done this using XSLT, and I'm intending to release my thml2osis.xslt as a separate project. It is about 90% done (at least in terms of translating Calvin's Commentaries), and has tests and so on. It should be a useful and portable utility for converting other CCEL sources. (The test suite is currently executed using unix tools, which would be a problem for Windows developers.) 4) Import as a Sword module. The problem here is that osis2mod is basically for importing Bibles only -- it expects you to use div type=book, div type=chapter (or chapter) and verse. These are not really natural or semantic ways to mark up a commentary. A more obvious and natural way to do it is like this: div type=section annotateType=commentary annotateRef=Bible:Gen.1.1pBlah blah.../p/div I do actually have a Python script which converts this markup to the that expected by osis2mod, but it uses DOM, and memory usage for the 45 Mb input OSIS file is prohibitive. Anyway, I think creating a version of osis2mod for commentaries is the better way to handle this (I did find an old message in sword-devel saying that an importer would be written if OSIS commentaries were provided). I would write the osis2mod modifications myself, but I've looked at osis2mod and the main function that needs modifying, handleToken(), is a bit of a beast -- about 400 lines, about 20 local variables etc. I'm not confident enough with Sword to be able to refactor it properly, and I don't want to do large amounts of copy and paste. So, is someone willing to help out with this final step? Also, is there a place where I should release this stuff? I think Sword needs a 'sword contrib' project, or at least a section on the wiki that details how to get these different things. I get the impression that the main Sword developers have various scripts to help them, and a central repository for these kinds of tools would be very helpful. I'm really looking for the bits which are *not* restored by doing this - especially anchors, ids, names and so on. My problem is I have ThML sources for general books and commentaries, and want to convert them to Sword modules. The thing that is especially difficult is how the ids and names etc in anchors get converted into references that Sword uses -- the internal a links in the modules I'm importing do not work once I've imported them into Sword. I'm using BibleTime to test, and know that the internal links in 'Institutes' do work, but I can't get the sources to see how this has been achieved. I have a similar problem with getting commentaries to work -- the ThML sources have correct scripCom tags, but the imported module appears empty when imported as a commentary. Does no-one have copies of the exact sources used to generate the 'Institutes' or 'Luther' modules, or an exact description of the process used to turn them into Sword modules? That would be the quickest way to solve my problem. I simply talk about what I've produced here, and I keep my own module repository populated with them. OK, thanks.
