t-and-f: Passing of Nick Katsounis
Sad news from the world of disabled athletics, wheelchair racing specifically. Nick Katsounis, race director of the North American 10km Wheelchair Championship, founding member of the Long Island Association of USATF and tireless agent for disabled athletes, passed away suddenly on January 19th. The Wheelchair Championship will be continued as a Memorial race for Nick. For further details, or if you wish to help to keep this great event alive in his memory, contact the Greater Long Island Running Club at 516-349-7646. Thank you, MJR
Re: t-and-f: VINCE CARTIER AND KEVIN BYRNE
>A good, but non-awesome career for Kevin in college.< Byrne was one of those guys who, as I recall, was incredibly physically mature as a high school sophomore. I was disappointed, but not shocked, that he did not have an awesome career in college or beyond.
t-and-f: Kevin Byrne
Kevin Byrne suffered a bad foot injury while warming up outside Franklin Field before the Penn Relays his freshman year at Georgetown and was never the same after that, although he did have a nice college career and finally earned a gold watch at Penn as part of the Hoyas' 4-by-8 team his senior year. He never ran post-collegiately. I actually raced against Kevin in the spring of 1975 when we were both HS sophomores in Bergen County (N.J.), he at Bergen Catholic in Oradell and me at Teaneck. I lost. Kevin now lives in Yardley, Pa., about five minutes from me, has two young kids, and is a very successful insurance executive outside Princeton. He never misses a Millrose HS Mile. Last time I saw Kevin he gave me a copy of an old Sports Illustrated from 1977 - there was a two-page story with lots of pictures about Kevin. And in the Faces in the Crowd section there was a blip about some hot-shot high school basketball player in Michigan named Earvin Johnson. Reuben Frank __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! The 2001 New York City Marathon® Will Host the USA Marathon Championships NEW YORK - (January 22, 2001) - The 2001 New York City Marathon will serve as the 2001 USA Men's and Women's National Marathon Championships it was announced today by Allan Steinfeld, President and CEO of the New York Road Runners Club (NYRRC) and Marathon Race Director. Re: t-and-f: VINCE CARTIER AND KEVIN BYRNE
Byrne went to Georgetown. I seem to remember meeting Vince Cartier at a WSSAC function (that's Warren Street Social and Athletic Club for those of you non-initiates) around 1980 or 81 - let's just say his resemblance to the Irish barflies at that point was closer than his resemblance to the running element hanging out at Shannons Bar... As for Byrne, somewhere I remember a fairly amusing story of an encounter between he and an overzealous DC policeman who was bent on enforcing jaywalking laws, but I don't remember the details. A good, but non-awesome career for Kevin in college. Doesn't matter who wrote it, you gave it a wider audience and for that you deserve to be pilloried. The "88" 4x4 wins (Everrett, Lewis, Robizine, Reynolds) For the 4x1 who's going to beat Marsh, Burrell, Mitchell and Lewis would probably run away with it.. the Burrell and Mitchell would ** blow out ** Williams and Johnson so it's be over and Maurice couldn't make would probably lose a meter to Carl anyway at the end. t-and-f: HS GIRLS RECORDS FALL OVER WEEKEND
New England girls set a pair of high school indoor field records over the past weekend. On Friday at the New Hampshire HS Indoor League meet, held at the University of New Hampshire, Laura Gerraughty of Nashua NH set a new best in the shot put. The top ranked scholastic thrower of 2000 recorded a distance of 53'11", shattering the old mark of 52'5 3/4" set by Heather Colyer of East Juniata (PA) HS set in 1997. Saturday, at the Brandeis (Waltham MA) Invitational, Molly Lederman upped her own record in the pole vault by 1/2". Competing for Air Time Athletics, as New Jewish HS in Waltham has no team, the junior cleared 13'1" (3.99 meters) to raise her own mark of 13'1/2" set on December 19. Steve Vaitones [EMAIL PROTECTED]

t-and-f: relay third leg man

Re: t-and-f: Relay Dream Teams
Problem with putting the fastest runners on the track is that it has nothing to do with a relay. France set the wr with men that ran 10.2 Canada won back to back majors with less than spectacular 100 m runners, but as a team they were gold. The US, man for man has always had the fastest on the track, did not result in finishing, not to mention a medal. I will put JD Bernard Curtis Maurice against any team you want. My all time JD Burrell Dennis M. Carl Lewis International JD Maurice Ato Carl To answer a question that was posed earlier, if you check the 95 world's you will find Maurice to Jon before they flubbed the second exchange. It was a nice combo too. That was when Maurice had just broken onto the scene. He blazed the bend, showing all of us what was to come. It was actually shocking to see. t-and-f: Elite Running web sites from NYRRC
On behalf of the New York Road Runners Club, I'd like to announce our two new web sites, www.mensracing.com and www.fast-women.com (a relaunch) that focus on men's and women's elite distance running. Mensracing.com features photos of Webb's historic run this past weekend as well as interviews with Goucher, Nick Rodgers (by Weldon Johnson) and Matt Downin. Fast-women.com has photos of Amy Rudolph's run from this past weekend and though the site has been around for a few months, it should start getting better now that it has backing from the NYRRC. I'd love to hear your input regarding what you'd like to see on these two sites... Sorry for the self-promoting e-mail! t-and-f: Did Webb set indoor AJR?
Does anyone out there know what the indoor American junior record for 1500 meters might be? Apparently Webb barely missed indoor WJR at mile with his 3:59.86 as Jim Ryun - when he was a freshman at Kansas - ran a 3:59.6 in Feb. 1966. 1500 WJR is 3:39.83 (Gert-Jan Liefers, NET, March '97). If there was a split for Ryun, Webb might still have beat it with his 3:43.27. Speaking of juniors, Webb had the extremely good fortune to have been born on January 13, meaning he'll have all of this year and next to compete as a junior. Ironically, however, his high school distance star counterpart, Dathan Ritzenhein, was born just 14 days earlier, yet will lose out on a whole year of junior eligibility because he'll be 20 years old for all of two days in 2002. Webb, incidentally, is the 237th American to join the sub-four minute mile club. Re: t-and-f: Thom Hunt's reaction to HS sub-4 indoors
Tom Shanahan's San Diego Union Tribune story contains a factual error. Donald Sage's 4:00.29 was actually for a full mile last spring, not a converted 1,500 as the story says. Steve Lurie Bioys T & F and Cross Country Coach Westwood (NJ) High School
