Re: t-and-f: Marion shooting for WR in 300 at Mt. SAC?
Well, gang, let me say it again and set the record straight again. Marion is not getting any money from Mt. SAC and there is no bonus money for a WR. I simply thought it might be a good idea to inquire about the possibility of adding Monique to the field for the local interest angle. Thought it might be good for some publicity and thought it might help the meet and maybe even generate some real fan interest. I am so sorry that I have stirred up such a hornet's nest by trying to make the race interesting. Monique is not running in the race and, by the way, I sure as hell won't be saying anything else to anyone regarding the other entrants. Again, excuse me for trying to generate some interest. t-and-f: Chepkemei's fast route to bonus
The Electronic Telegraph Monday 2 April 2001 Tom Knight SUSAN CHEPKEMEI claimed the £100,000 bonus for winning yesterday's Lisbon Half-Marathon with the fastest time run by a woman. In temperatures approaching the mid-70s, the 25-year-old Kenyan covered the 13.1 miles in 65min 44sec to take 59sec off the time set four years ago in Tokyo by Japan's Masako Chiba. Chepkemei, who finished fourth behind Britain's Paula Radcliffe in the 8 km event at last weekend's world cross-country championship, hit the front at 18 km and was never threatened. She said: "I did not plan to run so fast but I felt very strong throughout the race." Chepkemei beat one of the best fields ever assembled, which included Derartu Tulu and Tegla Loroupe, two of the main contenders for the Flora London Marathon on April 22. Tulu, the Olympic 10,000m champion from Ethiopia, whose 67-03 was more than a minute quicker than she ran here last year, was third. Loroupe, winner three times in the previous four years, was fourth in 68-16. Chepkemei's time is unlikely to be recognised as a world record because the Lisbon course runs downhill to the city centre. The men's race saw a rare defeat for Paul Tergat, the Kenyan due to make his long-awaited marathon debut in London. The five-times world cross-country champion was runner-up to the South African Hendrick Ramaala, who seized the initiative in the last mile to win in 60-26. Eamonn Condon WWW.RunnersGoal.com
t-and-f: Brendan O'Reilly dies, aged 71
THE IRISH TIMES Monday, April 02, 2001 Peter Byrne Brendan O'Reilly, who died in Dublin yesterday at the age of 71, was one of the best known personalities in Irish sport, first as an accomplished high jumper and later as an RTÉ television presenter. A man of singular integrity who was held in high esteem on either side of the Atlantic, he once cleared 6 ft 7 in at a meeting in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1956, at a time when the first seven-foot jump was but a distant aspiration for athletes around the world. O'Reilly, born in Granard, Co Longford, was a product of the late Jack Sweeney's school of excellence, and after spells with Guinness AC and Donore Harriers, he won a scholarship to the University of Michigan, where he studied drama. Controversially, he never competed in the Olympic Games. After winning a British AAA title in 1954, he achieved a qualifying standard for the 1956 Games in Melbourne, only to discover the Olympic Council of Ireland didn't have the funds to send him to Australia. His time at Michigan would stand him in good stead when RTÉ launched its television service in 1962. A member of the sports staff at Montrose, he also contributed occasionally to the Light Entertainment department, earning acclamation for the presentation of his variety show, The Life of O'Reilly. Acknowledged as a gifted man of many talents, he wrote a number of songs, and, as an actor, was rated sufficiently highly to take the lead in a number of plays in his university days. Away from sport and drama, his abiding passion was the life and times of Michael Collins. He admired Collins intensely, and some years ago was invited to deliver the oration at the annual ceremony at Beal na Blath. Brendan O'Reilly, whom so many of us were privileged to call a friend, is survived by his wife, Joanne, and four children. Eamonn Condon WWW.RunnersGoal.com

Hang on just a darn tootin' minute... Didn't she go sub-51 last year? Trying to cast herself as an innocent waif about to get steam- rollered by big bad Marion is an exaggeration. Secondly, didn't this list just go through a pretty long thread that suggested that one of things that put high schoolers in the 60's ahead (namely Ryun and Lindgren) was their willingness to put it on the line against the very best in the world (and I mean the then-current world record holders). If a sign of greatness is the willingness to 'stretch your boundaries' by gutting it out against whoever is the acknowledged 'best', then is doing the OPPOSITE a sign ofwellsomething a whole lot less than great? Or are the rules different for sprinters? If the latter is true, then it means sprinting is more genetic inheritance combined with trash talk, rather than physical contest combined with smart strategy and tactics (I for one don't believe it's ALL genetics & trash talk)- so why do our nation's best H.S. sprinters seem to believe it? Ryun would not have been great had he not been willing to lay it on the line against people like Peter Snell, lose and learn from it. I don't get it. Is losing to a world record holder that big of an ego-killer for sprinters? RT

Darrell, My expectation is that my message has as much meaning as your most intelligent post in the past three years. In other words, no. However, I was simply responding to the quote from Elders himself. "Rios' job violates the university's code of conduct, which specifies that Titan athletes should behave respectably, not cause disturbances or use foul language, and "give everyone who sees them a positive image of Titan student- athletes." Read it over, re read my post, and it should make sense. If not, I'm sorry. Schiefer PS. If you are interested in meaningful messages, you might want to find another list.

NEWS FLASH April 1, 2001 - Washington, DC - In a surprise move today, President George W. Bush announced that he has signed an Executive Order for the United States to go to the metric system immediately. Through White House spokesman Ari Fleisher, Bush cited the reasons for the order, "Simply, it was getting impossible to watch track meets on TV. Some commentators use English, some use metric and some use both. It is particularly hard to watch meets from overseas where they use the metric system only. My goodness, I have to keep looking in my Little Red Book. It will just be SO MUCH BETTER if we all go to the same system." The statement from the President went on to say "Track and field athletics is hitting a crescendo in the United States right now, especially on the heals of a High School 4 minute mile and Dathan's third place in the World Cross Country championships. I think it is just utterly preposterousness if we don't take this step." Netters A report on the selection of the first World Champs Team members Not only Clausen and Dunn are qualified. March 31, 2001For immediate release DUNN UPENDS CLAUSEN Philip Dunn's steady, if not spectacular performance, was more than enough to win his first ever National 50 Kilometer Racewalk Championship in a personal record time of 3 hours, 57 minutes, 18 seconds. The 29-year-old walked through the rain, Clausen, and then Seaman to conquer the 2 km loop at Bull Run Regional Park in Manassas, Virginia this morning. Susan Armenta won the first ever women's 50 km title, establishing a new national record of 4:49:42. "Philip's training has been going very well and very consistent since November," Coach Pena said. "I'm not surprised that he won today." Although Dunn was certainly expected to place in the top three, Pena was probably in the minority in that he wasn't surprised with the outcome. Curt Clausen had won three straight National 50 km's and was ranked fourth in the world in 1999. At the start, the race played out as expected with Clausen taking command almost from the gun. Tim Seaman, Dunn, and the Army's Al Heppner formed a trail pack that quickly pulled away from the rest of the field. Seaman and Dunn pulled away from Heppner just before the 14 km mark. Soon after, shades of 1999 returned, when Clausen pulled off twice to use the Port-a-John. This time, Clausen would pull off for the first of five pit stops before 20 km. Seaman and Dunn began to whittle away at Clausen's margin and overtook him after a second pit stop. Seaman made a move on Dunn early in the second half of the race and opened up a 20-second margin. Dunn held steady though and Seaman began to fade around 38 km at which point Dunn swept by him. Soon Seaman completely hit the wall and was forced to fitness walk the final 10 km. Meanwhile, Clausen fresh off his fifth and final pit stop, smelled blood and quickly reeled Seaman in. Unlike in 1999, when Clausen stormed back from a two-minute deficit to win, Clausen had too many pit stops and too large a deficit to overcome. Dunn cruised to the finish line and enjoyed a nine minute victory over Clausen (4:06:14) and nearly 17 minutes over Seaman (4:14:12), but Seaman, who was walking on empty for the last fifth of the race, battled valiantly just to make it to the tape. Meanwhile, Heppner (4:22:03), who had nearly lapped Theron Kissinger earlier in the race, was now fighting for his life to hold him off. A fast-charging Kissinger trimmed an 8 minute deficit to just over a minute, but simply ran out of time and had to settle for fifth in a time of 4:23:24. "My main goal was time-oriented and winning the race was just icing on the cake," said Dunn, who along with Clausen qualified for this year's World Championships in Edmonton. "Maybe I caught a break today, but it's all about giving your best effort and I did that today." Armenta was nearly a carbon-copy of Dunn, walking the steadiest to best the women's field. France's Kora Boufflert (5:07:02) took an early lead, but Armenta stayed relaxed and patient and was able to walk virtually unopposed for the majority of the race. The weather was less than ideal, although considerably better than last year's monsoon-like conditions at the Olympic Trials. This time it rained for the first half of the race, causing mud and water to saturate parts of the course. The rain stopped in the second half, but the temperature never approached 50 degrees. In a 50 km with tough conditions, usually the steadiest walkers win and that was certainly the case today. After the race, both Heppner and Clausen could be found in separate ambulances, both suffering from fatigue and mild hypothermia. Seaman wasn't exactly dancing around the course either, but an exuberant Dunn seem revitalized by his victory and was able to walk to his car under his own power, steady as ever. New Balance North Jersey's Sean Albert and Ecuador's Xavier Moreno are the heavy favorites for tomorrow's National Invitational 20 km, also at Bull Run Park. On Wednesday, Albert will join his 50 km teammates: Dunn, Clausen, Seaman, and Heppner in Bishop, CA for a training camp running from April 5-21. Tom Ken Stone is not just a random list member who reads the San Diego Union-Tribune. He is a copy editor for the paper and often writes track and field articles. t-and-f: Chepkemei's world best half-marathon
Many news report are saying Chepkemei's 1:05:44 beat the previous half-marathon best time of 1:06:43 by Masako Chiba at Tokyo '97. Back in 1987, Ingrid Kristiansen ran 1:06:40 in a Norway race. The course was certified by Norwegian authorities, but with no independent validation by leading international measurement community, doubts were raised about course accuracy anyways. Kristiansen was at top of her form in those days, and she ran along with several 2:19 men that day. (If there was pacing, not sure who might have been pacing whom!) It was loop course so Kristiansen did not get any boost from tailwinds and/or elevation drop. Chepkemei's marathon PR 2:26:39. She's supposed to run Rotterdam, April 22. -Original Message- From: Hans-Erik Pettersson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2001 1:59 PM To: t-and-f_statistics; t and f Subject: [t-and-f_statistics] Chepkemei and Ramaala win Lisbon Half Marathon Chepkemei and Ramaala win Lisbon Half Marathon. t-and-f: Conduct and College Athletes (Rios)
Mr. Elders, I am writing to you from TNFmedia.com, and copying the t-and-f list. In regards to your dismissal of Leilani Rios, and comment "Rios' job violates the university's code of conduct, which specifies that Titan athletes should behave respectably, not cause disturbances or use foul language, and "give everyone who sees them a positive image of Titan student- athletes." My question to you: Do you enforce this Code of Conduct based upon behavior alone, or is it only enforced in cases where this behavior is publicized? This is a very powerful question, and I urge you to give it some thought- Do you kick off the male athletes for using foul language at practice? Or are you sending the message that NONE of your athletes uses foul language? Being a former collegiate runner myself, I would have to say that there might just be one male athlete on your team who might have violated this "Code of Conduct" in your presence, and not dismissed.? In other words, are you telling us that no student athlete of yours has ever used foul language in your presence? And if they have, did you dismiss them from the team? Let's take a look at this-Is it really about conduct? Or is it about your and your facilities interpretation and selective enforcement of this "code". Good luck, and let's make sure that we never hear a CS Fullerton athlete use foul language at a meet. It might be cause for dismissal. John Schiefer

Re: t-and-f: Marion shooting for WR in 300 at Mt. SAC?
First, let me clear up a few things. Marion will receive no money for this attempt at Mt. SAC. Just like all the athletes who show up, there is no appearance fee. Moreover, there is no bonus money involved. Lastly, one of the local high school coaches in the area mentioned that it would be a good idea to inquire about Monique running since she is a local kid (Morse, San Diego) and will be at the meet anyway to compete in the prep section. And absolutely finally, and this is really directed at you, Ken, I thought it was worth a phone call to see what her coach thought of the idea. He said he would get back to me with his thoughts. Perhaps the next time you want to write about something like this, Ken, you might want to contact me as well. I would certainly appreciate the courtesy. Scott Davis Director-Mt. SAC Relays

t-and-f: South African Results
Full story at: www.iaaf.org/news/index.asp?Filename=/news/getnews.asp?Code=3421 30 March 2001 Engen Summer Series Finals in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Ato Boldon who was fourth in 10.41 in the 100 metres was a pale shadow of what he was at the Olympics. Normally quite approachable and talkative, he refused to talk to the media after his defeat. Instead he stormed out of the stadium. "That is not right. You cannot expect to win all the time. Boldon has behaved in an immature way. He is a role model to many youngsters. He is not setting a good example," said Braunskill who is a veteran in the sprints. He has let down the youngsters who look up to him as a role model. Mexico's Ana Guevara crowed a successful tour with a 50.11 seconds victory in the 400 metres. Earlier on, she won the event in 50.28 in Roodepoort and 50.18 in Pretoria last week. "This is my first time coming to Africa. I have never run so fast so early in the season. Not only do l think l can improve my Mexican record (49.70), l think l should be able to win a medal at the World Championships in August," said Guevara. t-and-f: Cycling Begins EPO Testing
I don't want to stir up the drug debate argument again, but I thought this was valid to post: Saw This on the VeloNews Website: The International Cycling Federation is beginnning a new blood test that will test for EPO starting today, April 1. "The new test will be used after races, but riders could also be tested twice in one day if the results of their morning blood test show a suspect hematocrit (red blood cell) count, or a suspect level for lesser-developed blood cells. Athletes determined to have used EPO will now face a ban of six months to a year.
