t-and-f: Inger Miller tested positive for caffeine

2001-10-14 Thread Eamonn Condon

The Irish Times
Sunday, October 14, 2001

Former world 200m champion Inger Miller tested positive for a banned
substance nearly three years ago, American officials admitted today.

The news explains at least one of more than 20 positive drug tests on
American athletes in 1999-2000, the revelation of which created a storm of
controversy before the Sydney Olympics last year, with international track
chiefs accusing their America counterparts of attempting a doping cover-up.

According to a press release issued by US Track and Field (USTF) the
American governing body, Miller was found positive for high levels of the
stimulant caffeine.

The drug test followed the 60 metres final at the World Indoor Championships
in Maebashi, Japan, in March, 1999, where Miller had placed third.

The standard sanction for such an offence is disqualification and a public
warning.

As a consequence, Canada's Philomena Mensah, fourth-placer in the Maebashi
final, can now expect to receive the bronze medal.

The delay in announcing the drug test findings appears to lie in the USTF's
lengthy hearings and appeal procedure, which was only completed earlier this
month.

In the meantime, Miller, now aged 29, has gone on to win the 200m title at
the outdoor World Championships in Seville, Spain, later in 1999, and a
sprint relay gold at this year's World Championships in Edmonton, Canada.

But the announcement is another blow for Miller's Los Angeles-based training
group, where she trains under coach John Smith.

Smith, coach to Maurice Greene, the world's fastest man, is facing a one
million dollar legal suit for damages over allegations of assault from
former charge, Anjanette Kirkland.

Smith's group is also reeling from the recent stimulant positive findings
against another high profile member of their group, Trinidad's Ato Boldon. -

2001-10-14 Thread Eamonn Condon

Sorry to wander off topic, but given the interest in track commentators on
the list I thought the following might be of light-hearted interest to some.
Formula One commentator Murray Walker hung up the mike today, after
sometimes informing, often confusing but always entertaining BBC audiences
for over half a century. (OK it's not TF, but it's a slow day and at least
it's not another drug story). Here are some of Murray's gems of
wisdom.

And now excuse me while I interrupt myself!

This is lap 26 which, unless I'm very much mistaken, is halfway through
this 58 lap race.

Alboreto into the pits and I'm going to stop the startwatch.

There is a man with a great Grand Prix future behind him!

There is nothing wrong with the car except that it is on fire.

...Ralf Schumacher, son of Michael Schumacher...

The first four cars are both on the same tyres.

There's been a major malmisorganisation problem there!

And Michael Schumacher is actually in a very good position. He is in last
place.

With half the race gone there is half the race still to go.

The crowd holds its joint breath!

Look up there! That's the sky!

A sad ending, albeit a happy one, here at Montreal for today's Grand Prix.

I imagine the conditions in those cars today are totally unimaginable.

Schumacher is either coming into the pits on this lap or he's not.

Twenty four points for Schumacher, twenty three points for Hill, so there's
only one point between them if my mental arithmetic is correct.

The beak of the Ayrton Senna chicken is pushing its way through the shell.

...and now he is on Lap 77 out of 73!

... and Edson Arantes di Nascimento, commonly known to us as Pele hands
the award to Damon Hill, commonly known to us as... Damon Hill

It's raining and the track is wet!

And now the boot is on the other Schumacher!

I make no apologies for their absence. I'm sorry they're not here.

This would have been Ayrton Senna's third win in a row had he won the two
before.

He's here again for the first time.

A mediocre season for Nelson Piquet as he is now known and always has
been.

And Michael Schumacher, as I expected, is now extending his lead over
Michael Schumacher!

...in 12th and 13th the two Jaguars of Eddie Irvine.

This is an interesting circuit because it has inclines, and not just up,
but down as well.

The Benetton...handling superbly as ever. Williams have worked very, very
hard on this car at the beginning of the season.

Even in five years' time, he (Coulthard) will still be four years younger
than Damon Hill.

Jenson Button ... driving like the veteran he is not.

And Nelson Piquet must be furious with himself inside his helmet.

And we have had 5 races so far this year, Brazil, Argentina, Imola,
Schumacher and Monaco!

We are in lap 19 of lap 19.

This is lap 54. After that it's 55, 56, 57, 58 ...

Either the car is stationary or it's on the move.

For the second time in the very recent future ...

He's shedding buckets of adrenaline in that car!

We now have exactly the same situation as at the beginning of the race,
only exactly opposite.

His hopes, which were nil before, are absolutely zero now.

Ralf Schumacher has been upstaged by the teenager, Jenson Button, who is
20.

He can't decide whether to have his visor half open or half closed.

The status quo could well be as it was before.

Heinz Harald Frentzen has already won three Grands Prix this year - two of
them last year...

Speaking from memory, I don't know how many points Piquet has got.

There are four different cars filling the first four places.

I wonder if Watson is in the relaxed state of mind that he's in?

The faster he goes the quicker he'll get to the pits. The slower he goes
the longer it will take

There goes Panis in the Prost. For years we knew them as Ligiers, because
that is what they were called.

With two laps to go then the action will begin, unless this is the action,
which it is.

The battle is well and truly on if it wasn't before, and it certainly was.

Now, in case there is any confusion - Coulthard leads and has yet to stop,
Hakkinen leads and has yet to stop.

He's in front of everyone in this race except for the two in front of him.

He's not going to produce a winner, but if he produces second it'll be the
next best thing.

It's not quite a curve. It's a straight actually!

Now he must not go the wrong way round the circuit, and unless he can spin
himself stationary through 360 degrees I fail to see how he can avoid doing
so.

... the man who won in 83, 85, and 86, so this could be his hat trick.

It looks as though this year there will be seventeen Grands Prix for the
World Championship, compared with the traditional seventeen.

Barrichello is about to drive in his fourth race for Ferrari, following the
great Ayrton Senna who never drove for Ferrari.

Alboreto has dropped back up to fifth place.

And Panis is almost literally laughing his head off in that car.

... and the Peugeot cup of misery is filled past

A little more on the Ellicottville tragedy too.

Jim Ralston, race director of the Oct. 21 Casino Niagara International
Marathon, made it official last week. He announced the marathon will be held
completely in Canada and won't be coming over the Peace Bridge, citing the
additional strain the race would put on customs and immigration agents
already working long hours because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The Detroit Free Press Marathon has been similarly impacted, and will not run

Results of Saturday's PSU National Invite, women's 6K, at the Penn State

Merten (FL) led throughout, but was followed closely by Wale (PSU) for 2

emerged as Penn State's best runner this season and was named Big Ten
female XC athlete of the week last week.

The team race was up for grabs much of the way, but JMU's superior grouping
(34s for 1-5) carried the day.

t-and-f: The list

2001-10-14 Thread Andre Sammartino

This is to follow up concerns regarding the perceived drop-off in the
quality of the list. One of the issues i have as a non-US participant (I
reside down under), is that track and field is not the major topic of
discussion over the period Oct, Nov, Dec etc, as the list gets extremely
US-centric and College X-C etc becomes the focus.

I have no particular problem with this, as I accept the majority of list
members are interested in these comps.

One issue for me (and perhaps others, i don't know), is that i don't
actually have a complete grasp on the NCAA system. I don't understand what
the purpose of Pre-Nats are - is it just to see the course/opposition or
was there some value in performing in terms of qualification?

In essence I have a series of questions that i couldn't find answers to
very easily on the NCAA/collegerunning sites:

1. How do schools qualify for NCAA champs?
2. How do individuals qualify?
3. What is the role of divisional champs and how come some schools don't
have a divisional alignment?
4. How do at large quals work?
5. Why are there no rankings/predictions of individuals' race
results/rankings similar to the Team rankings?

Background to my interest/questions and an example you might use to
illustrate your explanation: an old clubmate of mine Marty Fedmowski is at
Butler in Indianapolis... they don't seem to be in a conference... but they
beat a couple of the ranked schools at Pre-Nats... what do they to qualify
And he finished 9th in his Pre-nats Race and probably 25-26th overall...
does this make any difference to his chance of running at Champs?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can remedy my ignorance/confusion...

And maybe this might serve as a reminder that not all on here are from the
US and that your systems are far from transparent...

(Other topics i might raise in the future include what the hell is NAIA
basketball and why would we see it on cable here?)

Oh, and i love GH and Malmo's jokes... they lighten up what can be dreary
reading...

Thanks,
