t-and-f: CanAm I Recap: Fast 10k Highlights New Balance Boston I

2002-06-30 Thread Michael Scott

(Waltham, MA) -- Japan's Megumi Tanaka's 31:42.74 win in the special invitational
women's 10,000 over countrywoman Kazue Ogoshi's 31:46.31 hhighlighted a great night of
competitive racing at the New Balance Boston I High Performance Meet, contested at
Waltham (Mass.) High School.

Former USA Fall Cross Country champion Blake Phillips set the early pace (1k - 3:07,
2k-6:15) for the women's 10,000 field. After Phillips stepped off the track at 2400m,
Japan's Miwako Yamanaka and Ethiopia's Teyeba Erkesso through much of the rest of the
race (3k-9:27, 4k-12:38, 5k-15:48, 6k-19:01, 7k-22:13). Tanaka, whose previous best
was a 32:00.75 set last year, led the field through 8k in 25:26. Tanaka and Ogoshi
pulled away from the field over the next kilo (9k-28:37), with Tanaka proving
strongest over the final 400 as she notched a
31:42.74 win to claim a coveted World Championships qualifying standard. Ogoshi's
runner-up 31:46.31 effort fell agonizingly short of the 31:45.00 WC standard.
Ethiopia's Merima Hashim finished 3rd in 32:10.26.

In other highlights, NCAA champ Otukile Lekote led wire to wire to win the men's 800
in 1:47.48. Behind Lekote, Michigan frosh Nate Brennan finished strong to claim 2nd
in 1:48.42, ahead of future Wolverine teammate Nick Willis' 1:49.41.

In the women's US World XC Team member Sarah Hann followed the early pace of Victoria
Lynch before sprint away over the final circuit win in 4:21.70.

Other winners included Heather Hennigar (800 2:07.96), Ray Weeden (1500 3:44.58), and
NCAA D-3 XC/5000/10,000 champ J.B. Haglund (14:32.18).

The CanAm Circuit returns again to Waltham on Tuesday (July 2) for the New Balance
Boston I High Performance Meet. Afterwards the series moves on to the New Balance
Maine Distance Festival (Brunswick, Maine, July 6), and the two Les Internationaux de
Demi-Dond de Montreal meets (Montreal, Quebec, July 9 July 12).

t-and-f: It isn't only track

2002-06-30 Thread Ed Grant

Netters:

Track and field is not the only sport that US TV can spoil

I was up early today to watch the World Cup final and tuned in the
Univision startion rather than ABC

Two notes:

1) While Abc was walloing in commercials in the minutes before
the start, Univsiion was showing the paradfe of th teams onto the field,
each athlete accompanied by a young soccer player (I prsume they were chosen
that way), not all of them or Oriental persuaion. It was very ipressive.

2) For some reason, all through the tournament the ABC feed
has been about 10 seconds behind Univision, which meant that, if you
watrched ABC and then switched to Univision for the Goooal: calls, it was
usually too late.

t-and-f: NYC's plans for Olympic track field

2002-06-30 Thread koala

Since there doesn't seem to be any list e-mail traffic
today, how about a look forward to possibilities for the
2012 Olympics.

Houston's Astrodome venue was discussed this past week.

Are you aware that New York City is proposing to have track
field athletes warm up on a barge anchored in the Hudson
River? The barge would be anchored next to the competition
stadium, which would be a southward expansion of the Javits
Center. The retractable-roofed exhibition hall would be a
southward expansion of the Javits Center, and would be located
directly over the Long Island Rail Road's currently open Hudson
Yards. The proposed exhibition hall would be converted to
meet all requirements of Olympic athletics.
There is an artist' picture on their web site:

http://www.nyc2012.com/plan.sec2.html#

The stadium looks decent enough- ...no picture of the warm-up
barge though.

So what do you think- would it be better to warm up on a
barge in a river, or in the heat and humidity of Houston, Texas?

Pretty cool, and maybe even feasible (the total package). But a triathlon
within Central Park, w/ the swimming leg in the Reservoir? I guess it beats
dodging the refrigerators in the Harlem River.

t-and-f: Women's Decathlon?

2002-06-30 Thread Roger Ruth

Does anyone know what progress is being made toward establishing the
decathlon as a women's event? Are any plans underway for holding decathlon
competitions in the 2003 season? Have any already been held?

In part, my interest stems from knowing of several current vaulters
(including Stacy Dragila) who moved to the vault after earlier specializing
in the heptathlon. It seems to me that the big advantage they would hold in
that one of the events to be added to the heptathlon program would make it
of special interest to them.

Answer off-list, if you like, but there may be other subscribers who would
be interested in this information.

Cheers,
Roger

As part of our annual state HS multi-events in Washington, the past 2 years,
there has been a HS girls decathlon. I'm not sure exactly what tables were
used to score the event, or all the details, but results were reported in
the local newspapers.

I'd prefer terra firma and nice balmy bay area temperatures (the third U.S.
bidding city), although I guess if they hold it in San Francisco itself, it
could be downright chilly. The kayaking and rowing events would be held
within sight of my house in Folsom, CA, so I have to come down against
either New York or Houston.

At least they don't have to worry about sharks in New York rivers for the
triathlon - at least no sharks that are alive :)

Well, gang, now that the US season is pretty much over, I can devote some
more time to this huge accumulation of material. Here is a list of many
one-of-a-kind books from Don's material that I can now make available.
Obviously, this has to be first-come-first served. There will be more of
this type of material, but I wanted to get something out there for interested
parties. I can't take the time to answer particular questions about a
particular item. I have tried to grade the books fairly and price them
accordingly. Many of these books are quite scarce. Remember, all this money
is going to Don's family. Checks should be made made payable to me at the
regular address 4432 Snowbird Circle, Cerritos, CA. 90703. The attachment is
in Word 7.0. Cost includes surface mail. Add 3.00 per book if you want
priority mail. Many thanks and watch soon for the Leichtathletik posting,

American Record Holder Bob Kennedy Highlights Second CanAm Meet

(Waltham, Mass) -- Strong 3000 fields highlight the entries for Tuesday's
New Balance Boston II High Performance Meet at Waltham (Mass) High
School, the second stop on the 2002 CanAm High Performance Distance
Circuit.

Bob KENNEDY, 2-time Olympian and American Record holder in the 3000 and

field is British national team member Karl KESKA, a former standout at
the University of Oregon, and US world cross country team member Dave
DAVIS. If Kennedy has successfully regained his fitness, Andre William's
1999 meet record of 7:57.35 could be in jepardy.

In the women's 3000, Japan's Kazue OGOSHI -- runner-up in the 10,000 at
the first CanAm event in 31:46.31 -- is slated to face off against
Canadian distance star Sarah DILLABAUGH, the meet record holder at
9:08.05.

Two-time Olympian Jason PYRAH is entered in the 800 where he faces a
strong field of young half-mile specialists, while Matt DOWNIN and Ian
CONNOR face off over 1500.

Chantee EARL, 4th at last week's USATF 800 championships, will contend
over 800 with top ten USATF 1500 runners Priscilla HEIN, Elissa RIEDY,
and Sally HAUSER, as well as Canadian national runner-up Heather HENNIGAR
-- the winner of the Boston I 800. Japan's Megumi TANAKA, winner of the
Boston I 10,000 in 31:42.74, is stepping all the way down to 1500.

Competition gets underway at 6:00pm, while the elite races are scheduled
to start just after 7:00pm. For directions, complete list of entries,
results, and other CanAm information, visit the CanAm website at:
