I wouldn't be able to imagine--let alone explain--the difference between
what I described as a gyro-balanced camera and what he called a
critically damped open loop control system...

I believe it is the same system. The camera is dangled over the stadium
from pillars at the four corners. Four stepper motors release or pull each
wire independently in small steps, positioning the camera anywhere in the
3-D space above the stadium. Three additional degrees of freedom allow
rotating the camera, tilting it up or down, and zooming it.

The software controls the entire system. Predetermined trajectories are
programmed into the computers to move the camera swiftly from one place to
another. For example: go to the pole vault pit, or follow lane 1 on the
track.

Wrong! IBM built the overhead camera system for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

with minimal bounce, using a critically damped open loop control system.

t-and-f: Kurt Steiner article

2001-05-09 Thread Dr Kamal Jabbour

Thanks to all who sent me information about Kurt Steiner. KJ.

Kurt Steiner: Driven by His Passion

PUBLISHED IN THE SYRACUSE POST-STANDARD
Monday May 7, 2001
by Kamal Jabbour, Contributing Writer

When Lennie Tucker received the RRCA's Kurt Steiner Children's
Developmental Running Award, I wondered who Kurt Steiner was. A thorough
search on the World Wide Web revealed little information, so I turned to
my buddies on the running email list server.

Allan Steinfeld, the director of the New York City Marathon, supplied the
facts. Kurt Steiner was born in Austria in 1921. He joined the French
Foreign Legion in 1939, and spent the next several years at outposts in
Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. The Germans captured him in Tunisia in 1943,
and confined him to a POW camp for two years. He escaped on a bicycle in
1945. Steiner later came to the United States, and served in the U.S. Army
in Korea.

Kurt was a dedicated volunteer, race director and a founder of the running
movement in the NYC area. Along with Joe Klienerman of the NYRRC, Steiner
pioneered age group scoring and awards. He would travel all over the city
to officiate at races. His passion for the sport was surpassed only by his
passion for childrens, as he called them in a heavy accent.

Vic Navarra witnessed Steiner's kindness personally as a young boy of 7
years, when he stumbled upon a 3-mile race in Clove Lakes Park in Staten
Island. Steiner approached Navarra and encouraged him to run the race.
They ran together. After the race Steiner shared a towel and kind words
with the young runner, and awarded him his first medal. That chance
meeting inspired Navarra to a life of involvement in the sport of running.

During the late sixties, Steiner organized many races for youths under the
New York Road Runners Club Banner. He was especially keen on cross-country
as the foundation for age group running. He established the RRCA Cross
Country Championships in NYC, which hosted between 3000 and 4000 kids.

At start of many races at Van Cortlandt, Steiner took time to introduce
any famous or near-famous runners who happened to be competing that day,
including a recap of their athletic accomplishments. Sometimes this went
on for 10-15 minutes as the runners stood around on the start line,
shivering in the cold, waiting to race.

Jim Gerweck of Running Times also remembers a famous Steiner line at the
start of many New York City: If you can hear my voice, you can break 3
hours.

Steiner himself ran 99 marathons. He had a habit at Boston for as many
years as he could, to burst into the lead at the start and sprint as hard
as he could to establish the seriousness of the race for those of all
abilities. Short and stubby, he ran full of optimism. He was never a fast
runner but tried very hard which, of course, is all anyone can do.

Steiner passed away in 1993. His memory lives on every summer when runners
meet for the Kurt Steiner Summer Speed Run Series in NYC.

t-and-f: Indoor webcasts

2000-12-17 Thread Dr Kamal Jabbour

This is an open invitation to all coaches and meet directors to send me
videotapes of your track meets for posting on TrackMeets.com. We can take
NTSC VHS, 8mm, Hi-8 and Digital-8 tapes. We will encode them at no charge,
and post them in their entirety for one full year.

There is no limit on size or number of tapes: the more, the merrier.
Whatever you do, please use a good tripod, and show Every Lap of Every Race
in the meet that you tape.

Please contact me with technical questions, and mail the tapes to me at
the address below. Please label the tape clearly with the name and date of
the meet, and provide contact information.

t-and-f: 2001 World's [sic]

2000-11-30 Thread Dr Kamal Jabbour

Adding insult to injury, the IAAf has followed the IOC's lead in banning
"alternative media" broadcasts of the games (read: no Internet coverage).
And last I checked, no US network had placed a bid for TV coverage (if
that's what NBC called its Olympic debacle).

Happy running!

t-and-f: Arnie Briggs

2000-11-15 Thread Dr Kamal Jabbour

I just learned that Arnie Briggs died last night after a short battle with
pancreatic cancer. Arnie was an assistant coach at Syracuse University in
the 60s and 70s, and coached Katherine Switzer for her Boston Marathon
debut, which he ran with her. After Boston, Katherine and Arnie started
a running club which later became the Syracuse Chargers Track Club.

t-and-f: NY Scholastic XC Champs

2000-11-09 Thread Dr Kamal Jabbour

TrackMeets.com will webcast this weekend's New York State Scholastic Cross
Country Championships from Utica starting Saturday 8:30am EST. Besides the
technical challenges of the lack of electric power (we'll use generators)
and Internet access (we'll go wireless on borrowed USAF equipment), the
spread-out course will require close 8,000 feet of coaxial cables.

Khalid Khannouchi, the world record holder in the marathon, and Todd
Williams, one of the country's best 10,000-meter runners, will lead a
fast field of non-olympians in an attempt at the US 5K road record at the
Syracuse Festival of Races on October 1.

Unlike the Olympic Marathon run the same day in Sydney, that noone in the
US can watch live, Khannouchi's race in Syracuse will be broadcast live on
the web in streaming video at TrackMeets.com.

With a cool couple million bucks I bet the crew from trackmeets.com and

So anybody got some cash sitting around...

It is not so much the money that we need - although we could use some.
NBC has bought the Internet rights so they can kill them. I pleaded with
them for permission to webcast live the OT distance events, to no avail.

For the record, TrackMeets.com broadcast more live track and field in 2000
than all 4 networks combined.
