Just today I have come across Roger Ruth's question as to the citizenship of former USSR pole vaulters. There are some good points in Randy Treadway's answer, but things were sometimes even more complicated. After the end of the USSR, Leo Heinla and me tried to compile lists for the new states and were faced with a lot of problems (Randy Treadway pointed out some). The biggest problem were the athletes in the army clubs: for instance, a club was located in a town in Ukraine, but a part of this unit fulfilled its service in Belarus. And in a kind of federation cup, he may have represented Ukraine, but actually he was born and brought up in Russia, and only his military service took place anywhere else. So there was no given solution. Heinla and me advised the newly-created federations as to their new records, some accepted our proposals, others had their own ideas. Dear netters, I have come across a website (http://members.aol.com/miaminwx/girlsh.html) with some astonishing results hitherto unknown, It is the Northwest Track and Field Classic at Miami, June 11 - 13, 2004 with such marks as 100m: 11.44 Lisa Montiner, 11.69 Le'Tita Silas and in the heats 11.51 Tamara Rigby (BAH). Can anyone confirm that these results are regular, and explain to me why they can't be found in any US lists. Thomas Springstein, former coach of Kathrin Krabbe and still coach and companion of Grith Breuer, is accused of having given testosterone to juvenile athletes who are coached by him. The German Athletics Federation had instituted legal proceedings against him when they were informed by one of these athletes. At the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, there was a high jumper named Gavin Lee from Montserrat. He was entered with a pb of 2.03m on Apr 17, 2002; most likely he is living and competing in the USA. Immediately after the European championships you could read rumours about doping in the German press as far as some Greek champions were concerned. These rumours are now nourished when Kenderis, Thanou and Manjani cancelled their participation in Zurich. The facts for these rumours are as follows: Kenderis and Thanou competed only at the NC (Trikkala, 16 June) and at the EuroCup (Banska Bystrica, 23 June). They left out the major EAA and IAAF meetings even on Greek soil. The same is true for Manjani who only competed at minor Greek meetings in early spring. The German press assumes that their abstinence was caused by doping controls at major Greek and international meetings. Moreover, the German press points at an incident some years ago when Greek athletes fled from doping controlers in Germany. President of the athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Dan Ngerem has formally announced the exclusion of female sprint star Endurance Ojokolo from the Commonwealth Games for abusing British Welfare procedures. Ngerem said during a media chat in Lagos that the athlete who may have been evading the Scottland yard Police scuttled attempts made by the federation to know the extent of her problems and ways of assisting her. I sent two letters to Endurance just to know the magnitude of the problem and perhaps find a way of assisting her, but she did not reply. When I learnt she was in Canada, I made enquiries through the phone with a view of knowing what the problems and if she could do with a lawyer. She promised to get across to me but it was to no avail, Ngerem said. He contended that since the athlete has made up her mind to hide her problems, the federation has no option than to drop her from the Commonwealth team until she clears herself. The nation's contingent to the Commonwealth Games can't afford any embarrassment from the British Police. If any member of the contingent is arrested for any offence it would be harmful to the nation's image. That is why the AFN took the action but she could be re-invited to the team after clearance from the British police, Ngerem enthused. Ojokolo, twice winner of Nigerian athletic Trials was reported by British Newspaper to have abused her daughter's welfare claims by falsifying the baby's paternity. When the lid blew open, Ojokolo was arrested, interrogated. She was said to have afterwards jumped bail. Dear netters, meanwhile the Kuwaiti Federation has shed some light on the problem of the citizenship of Bashar Ibrahim, UTEP's 1500m runner. Bashar's mother is a Kuwaiti, residing in Kuwait, whereas his father lives in the US and has got Sudanese citizenship. According to Kuwaiti law, youths with Kuwaiti mothers and non- Kuwaiti fathers stay native citizens until the age of 21 and then their Kuwaiti citizenship ceases. So according to Kuwaiti law, Bashar Ibrahim became a Sudanese citizen in 2001.
