But don't equate income with opportunity to run. I live with a South
African marathoner. His stories of running in South Africa indicate a
wealth of opportunities, especially due to heavy corporate involvement in
sport which allows many runners to compete for company teams. Despite
great poverty, many have the opportunity to compete.

Re: t-and-f: Depth of Talent

2000-10-30 Thread Roger Ruth

Earlier today, David Monti posted, under this subject heading, what I
thought to be an impressive list of South African 10k national championship
times. Subsequently, Paul Talbot asked, "Is this really any deeper than the
U.S. in the early 1980s?"

I'm sure that someone else can answer Paul's question, which is an
interesting one. "Depth of Talent," though, catches my own interest, since
national depth has been a recurring topic in my postings. These have
postulated that national depth in athletic success should be considered in
relation to national population and per capita income, since these seem
logically related to a country's athletic potential.

USA has over six times the population of RSA (275,562,673 vs. 43,421,021).
Each of those Americans, on average, has nearly five times the annual
income of each South African ($33,900 vs. $6,900).

Clearly, comparing the depth of RSA talent to that of USA in terms of total
number alone ignores some important differences in opportunity.

Cheers,
Roger

Netters

In response to David Monti's list - do we even have that many guys in the
U.S?

Also note only 7 are 30+

Next question - S.A. is so deep like this - a 10 second gap - why aren't
they better in Cross?

t-and-f: Depth of Talent

2000-10-30 Thread David Monti

Track Listers,

While not attempting to play down the role of performance-enhancing drugs in
athletics, I sometimes think Westerners are out of touch with the depth of
talent in other parts of the world, especially Africa. As an example I
offer the results of the recent (07-Oct) South African championships over
10-K on the roads, an event contested on a properly certified course. The
45th finisher ran 29:38, similar to the results at last year's race when 46
men broke 30 minutes.

With the exception of the very top men, you should bear in mind that most of
these athletes are not professionals. I doubt most of you have heard of any
of the athletes outside the top-5. It is unlikely that they have access to
any decent medical care, let alone performance enhancing drugs.

I recorded results from a similar race in Eldoret, Kenya last year where the
30th runner (at 2000m of altitude) ran 29:42.

The depth of talent in these two countries is staggering.
