actually, the very old and formerly established way was railway=*,
disused=yes
railway=disused is not so old, is quite established and often complemented
by disused=*

disused:railway is following the (newer) general convention :*=*,
introduced to overcome additional qualifiers like disused=yes, ruins=yes,
abandoned=yes, dismantled=yes, demolished=yes, razed=yes etc.

Hello,

adding railway=disused additionally to disused:railway=* ensures
backward compatibility, so that renderers which do not consider
lifecycle prefixes still produce good results.

It might also be easier for some renderers just to look at the value of
railway=* than using rendering rules like "if there is a
disused:railway=* tag then render a disused track, if there is an
abandoned:railway=* tag, ... otherwise render the value of railway".

This tagging is redundant and not necessary for using lifecycle
prefixes, but at the moment it seems to be a good compromise.

railway=disused is a very old and established tag. All data consumers
who want to do something (e.g. rendering) with disused railway tracks,
use this tag. disused:railway=rail/narrow_gauge/tram/… is used for
further distinction because it is a huge difference if you have a
disused miniature railway or a disused monorail.

Stations, halts and other disused railway nodes are not tagged using
disused=railway because this tag is defined as a disused railway track
(a track cannot be a point feature, it's always a line feature).

IMHO this is an old scheme, nowadays you can simply tag
disused:railway=station / light_rail etc.
No need for 2 tags

Then you have a 'sub tag' to describe what is disused .. a railway station,
