Ok, so what's the next step here?

 - Shall someone sum up all this is in /contribute/release_schedule?

Yes. I've gone through this thread and a quick copy'n'paste summary is:

  * always increment the first number with major Debian version
  * also increment the first number whenever it make sense for Tails
only (user-visible changes)
  * second number: even for bugfix releases, odd for major ones
   * we allow ourselves to skip numbers if we release two major or two
minor releases in a row (eg. 1.7 followed by 1.9).
  * add an extra 3rd number for emergency releases

I might have found a bug in our new version numbering scheme...

We're saying, regarding the second number, odd = major and even =
minor. But at the same time 2.0 = major (or actually super major).
But zero is even [1].

Maybe we should consider using even = minor and odd = major instead.

page. That would be the second modification needed there, to make it
consistent with what Austin English is implementing.

 Thoughts?

Ok, so adjusting my last proposal we could:

 1. Change the title into Warning: non-free virtual machine detected!

 2. Change the body into:

Both the host operating system and the virtualization software are
able to monitor what you are doing in Tails.

Additionally, only free software, both as operating system and
 virtualization software, can be trustworthy.
 a
 href='file:///usr/share/doc/tails/website/doc/advanced_topics/virtualization.en.html#security'Learn
 more.../a

 That's better, no?

That phrasing sounds awkward to me. How about:
Both the host operating system and the virtualization software are
able to monitor what you are doing in Tails.

Only free software can be considered trustworthy, for both the host
operating system and the virtualization software.

 a
 href='file:///usr/share/doc/tails/website/doc/advanced_topics/virtualization.en.html#security'Learn
 more.../a

Still not perfect, but it's an awkward sentence to try to phrase.

Fine with me, especially if you're a native speaker. I don't know if
that's your case, but personally I'm not :)

Yes, I am :). It sounds more natural to me than your suggestion,
though there's definitely room for improvement on it, as it sounds a
bit awkward.

[Tails-dev] Reopening Bug #7755 (Migrate WhisperBack to Python 3) ?

2015-08-10 Thread Romeo Papa
Hello,

While working on #9412 (Add SOCKS support to WhisperBack) I've stepped
into some issues which I believe are related to the whisperback-python3
ticket.

Please see https://labs.riseup.net/code/issues/7755#note-38

Thanks,

Re: [Tails-dev] [tor-qa] Tor Browser 5.0 is ready for testing!

2015-08-10 Thread Mike Perry
Georg Koppen:
 Mike Perry:
  https://people.torproject.org/~mikeperry/builds/5.0-build2/

This release is our first stable release based on Firefox 38-ESR. We've
done a lot of work to ensure that this release is minimally disruptive
in terms of changes to the UI/UX, but some hacks were needed, especially
to ensure the Tiles feature was disabled, and to clean up the NoScript
  whitelist.

The current Firefox 31-ESR is end-of-life on Tuesday, August 11th, so we
need to switch all users to 5.0 for them to pick up security updates. As
such, extra testing would be appreciated!

FWIW: One thing we already found and which unfortunately makes a build3
necessary is the incompatibility with the localized language packs. I
was under the impression (wrongly as it turns out) that Mozilla fixed
their versioning scheme we get with the git checkouts starting with
their esr38 cycle and forgot to doublecheck that.

If anyone was waiting for build3 before testing (which was a bad idea),
it is now ready:
https://people.torproject.org/~mikeperry/builds/5.0-build3/

Please test.

[Tails-dev] Low hanging fruit session: Wednesday August 12

2015-08-10 Thread sajolida
The next low-hanging fruit session is scheduled for:

Wednesday 12 August
#tails-dev on irc.oftc.net
 9 pm in Paris
 8 pm in London
 3 pm in New-York
12 pm in San Francisco

Everyone interested in contributing to Tails is welcome!

The idea is to spend a while together on many small tasks that
take less than 2 hours each.

Not only these sessions are very useful to make Tails better, but we
were happy to see new people joining recently. We hope to see even more
of that in the future as these sessions are great times to start
contributing to Tails!

For newcomers, the list of easy tickets should be a great
place to start: https://tails.boum.org/contribute/easy_tasks/

During these meetings, we exceptionally allow ourselves to do
the review merge process on IRC instead of the usual
email-based workflow, so this should all go pretty smoothly.

We'll also try to handle bug fixes for the next release that are not assigned
to anybody.
