I'm using a lenovo x240 with 8GB of RAM for pretty much the same type of
usage. This is actually my second x240. When the first one crapped out I
resorted to using a Pentium (MS Vista era, not a modern core called pentium)
with 3GB of RAM while hunting for a replacement.

The default install on the Pentium created a ridiculously small SWAP space
which caused problems, but once I increased it, it ran quite nicely if a
bit slow compared to the x240.

Probe received.

Fixed in Debian 11 and 12 (bullseye and bookworm, respectively) by debian
package versions 2.2.1-3+deb11u1 (for bullseye) and 2.2.1-4+deb12u1
(for bookworm) on 11 October.

No, mailbox.org

I'm using one at lunanode. Roughly $3.50/mo CAD. Can't remember the exact
specs, but it's a pretty minimal machine. 1 vcpu

If the rejected mail dates from ages ago, maybe, because I didn't initially
set a PTR for ipv6 (ipv4 was set up for me by default). But, yooyle mail
complained, so it didn't take long for me to set up a PTR for ipv6, too.

[GTALUG] Introduction (really just a new nick)

2023-09-20 Thread joeDoe via talk
Hello,

As I've sent a couple of emails to a thread here, I thought I should let you
know that I am one and the same person as znoteer. That's an old nick that I
have been maintaining pretty much only on email. I max'd out the number of
email users I could have on my email account, so I couldn't create a joeDoe
address to switch to.

But, I've been experimenting with running my own email server as part of a
Freedombox (a Debian Pure Blend). I can now have as many frickin email
users as my system can handle :) So, I am now subscribed with a nick that
I've been using in chats etc for some time.

This will permit me to evaluate this mail server thang. If keeping an email
server proves to be not too onerous (so far Freedombox has made it quite
effortless), I may just keep on going. Otherwise, I'm looking for a new
provider as mine changed their offer and it doesn't suit me so much any
more.

Cheers,

joeDoe

In general, an installer will do nothing more than install a new system.
Most will probably have some shell access available to be able to do some
stuff outside of the installation, but usually only related to the
installation. It is limited as you say.

A live system gives you a complete working system that runs off the USB
key/CD/etc that you burned it to and memory, rather than the permanent
storage of the computer. Many live systems will also permit you to
subsequently install them to the permanent storage of the computer, but you
are not required to.

Anything that you need that isn't on the live system can be easily installed
if it's packaged for Debian. It's a full system, so you can also download
and compile something that isn't packaged in Debian if you need to do so.

Debian also publishes live images:
