Thanks. Easiest was "rectangular selection, crop to selection, resave".
Also worked was "copy/paste of rectangular selection", which would be
inverse.

I have an image that is too large.  I don't want to reduce the whole
image.  I just want to cut out left and right borders, like you
would do
with scissors.  How do you do that with GIMP (I assume it would be GIMP
thing).

In Windows, I just move the left/right edges with mouse.  Searching
online for GIMP answers, I get things like transparent layer, selection
layer, etc. :-(

William,

   GIMP has a crop tool.

Image Magick's convert tool also does cropping from the command line.

Open in Gimp
 - Tools menu, Selection Tools sub-menu, Rectangular Select
 - Select the area, excluding borders
 - Edit Menu, Copy Visible Area
 - Edit Menu, Paste as .. New Image
 - Export back to what ever format you prefer..

The way I do this is to go to Image -> Canvas Size.

I set the width to the correct dimension and then drag the picture in the
preview back and forth until I am happy with where it is cut.

Not really Linux related except for the fact that GIMP in Linux.
