Do make sure that you put Chrome into full screen mode when you enter a web
page. You can do that by pressing F11.

I am running jaws 2019 with the latest update and sometimes have to use IE
because Jaws won't perform the same actions in chrome. I don't know if the
problem is with jaws or chrome, but that's why it's good to have two or more
browsers.

Subject: Firefox Again

A couple of weeks ago, we had the new Firefox breaking the accessibility under
WinEyes. It is well known, from version 56 and up, Firefox will no longer
operate with WinEyes.

Someone kindly pointed us to the business - or ESR - version of firefox, at the
time being version 52. I followed their advice, and installed it, greatly
enjoying to have my Firefox back on stage.

This morning, Firefox notified me there was a security update to my
installation. In other words, no new version, just a maintenence update.
Hence, I agreed to have it perform the update.

Yeah, I take it, you have already guessed what. From now on, my Firefox
says version 52.5, and is no longer doable with WinEyes. It no longer
goes into the programs Main Window, but says Document Window. Here you
can tab around, but the arrow keys produces no real effect, and browse
mode is reported to be:

 Not Available.

Oh, how I hate that message. Smiles.

OK, if anyone have seen different behavior, or have got to a bit of
knowledge on how to get Firefox back, we are all ears. To me, it seems
Firefox simply has crept out of all cooperation with our screen reader.
Little do I hold it realistic it will ever come back.

Some place, I seem to recently have read, that someone from the NVDA
team had gone to Mozilla. It then is strange that we are facing this
kind of lack of accessibility. It even states, under Help and About,
that Firefox is meant to make the web accessible to everyone. I guess,
that means except from old-timers with their WinEyes. Smiles and LOL.

For some, Chrome might be an alternative. The rest of us, will be back
to Internet Explorer. Chrome has its benefits, but so far I have had
issues with it under certain operations.

Following NVDA discussions lately, even that screen reader seem to have
high issues with the newest firefox releases. It is being claimed,
things will get better in version 58, but to what extent that will
affect WinEyes, I am doubtful. And a recent note I read from VFO, on
Jaws, seemed to indicate that even Jaws users are experiencing trouble
with Mozilla lately. It was recommended not to use Firefox with Jaws
2018, if I remember correctly. Currently, I am not on that version of
Jaws, so cannot confirm. Anyone here has had a chance to test newest
releases of the screen reader and browser together?

Goodbye to a long-lasting browser, which had numerous and beneficial
advantages over any other products. Along with the somehow old-fashioned
way of operating the web with Jaws - which to a degree reminds me of
where WinEyes was a handful of years ago, the whole Internet browsing
experience now seem to be a setback. Sure is going to take a bit of
time, to get back to normal browsing speed.

Sure, they made it secure? Didn't they. So secure you can't even use it.
That is another kind of safety. Well, seems not even sighted users are
comfortable with the newest moves from Mozilla. Probably why they tell
the next release (58) will have some advancements. Does it remind you of
what happened to things like Windows8, and the fact they had to go back
on certain of the news, when releasing next versions? So maybe we should
not wave totally goodbye to Mozilla all yet. I just wish they would have
a setting somewhere, which would let the browser run the old way, even
if they make some security adjustments behind the scene.

Just wanted to let you know my findings. If anyone have ideas, I for one
will be listening.

For your info, I am under Win7 64bit, and the Firefox is reported as
v52.5ESR 32bit.

Might be useful for new JAWS users

2017-05-24 Thread Martin Brown via Talk
I am a long time user of JAWS. A lot could be done to improve its usability.
Sadly, in recent times, the opposite is true. In many instances I find the
JAWS curser as a means of reading a screen just about useless. Instead, I
now invoke the touch curser which I find will get me to information not
available to either the PC curser or the JAWS curser. To enable the touch
curser, hold down the shift key and press the numpad plus key. You can then
move up and down through the information using the left and right arrow
keys, or if you prefer, by using the numpad keys four and six. To leave the
touch curser mode, simply press the numpad plus key twice quickly.
Hope this helps all you new JAWS users.

Hi,

1. Make sure the person has actually ran one of the following, word, excel
powerpoint and not just installed office.
2. make sure the person is using Microsoft speech platform, or eSpeak as
the voice. If they chose eloquence, vocalizer expressive or another premium
synthesizer without paying for them, this will turn it into a demo.

3. repair Microsoft office from programs and features. Use the online
repair not the quick one.

One of the above should fix the problem.

Hello Sky.
I have listened to both podcasts, and would not be optimistic about the
survival of Window-Eyes.
I found very little about either podcast to give me even the smallest twinge
of excitement about what will be new in JAWS 18 either. Audio Ducking would
seem to be the revolutionary new idea for which I will be expected to give
eternal thanks for. The software engineers must have lost a lot of sleep in
order to come up with that 21st century break through. Good enough idea and
useful, but come on chaps, not really worth the price of an SMA

To be fair, there was also mention of further development in the support of
complex web pages, whatever that means. Oh, and work is to continue on
support for the Edge browser. In recent years, the only thing that I can say
about Freedom Scientific, is that they no longer fail to disappoint me.

Hello Window-Eyes users. Sky here. I wanted to update you guys on What's
been happening at VFO Group, Particuarly in regards to Zoomtext, and
Window-eyes. In September, 2 editions of FSCast came out regarding JAWS 18.
One of the features that will be in JAWS 18 will be a talking mouse support.
The guys at VFO group has said that They have plans to put the talking mouse
support in Zoomtext, and make JAWS work with it. This made me laugh, as
first of all, Zoomtext already has Window-eyes in it, called Fusion,
secondly, Zoomtext, from my understanding, already has built in mouse
support already with Fusion. No menschen of Window-eyes or even Fusion. In
the next FSCast, VFO went into more details on JAWS 18 and Zoomtext. What is
going to happen is that in Zoomtext 11, JAWS and Zoomtext will be working
together. I can honestly tell you that they also plan to put in a talking
mouse support for MAGic, which will be released in 2017. This is not a good
sign, and besides, Zoomtext and JAWS, would cost a lot more to buy, than it
would cost to buy Zoomtext Fusion. At no point in the two FSCasts do they
menschen what's going to happen with Window-eyes.

A right pain

2016-08-12 Thread Martin Brown via Talk
Perhaps someone can advise. When using Internet Explorer on, for example,
Audible, and I wish to get more details on a particular title I press enter
to get the required information. All good so far. However, when I press the
alt key and the left arrow key to return to the previous page I am always
returned to the top of that page and not to the title for which I originally
sought the information. I then must start down arrowing to that point before
I can continue to examine the rest of titles on offer. This loss of position
is the same on whatever site I am exploring. A real pain. I never get this
problem with JAWS or Voiceover. So, it is specific to Window-Eyes. This is
unfortunate because in all other respects it performs well on the web. A
game breaker for me, because always having to find my previous position is
just so tedious and time consuming.

RE: Unable to access folders in Outlook2016

2016-08-09 Thread Martin Brown via Talk
Hi Yusuf,
Go to the View menu, down arrow to Layout, right arrow to folder pain, press
the space bar and make sure normal is checked. Sometimes Outlook seems to
change this to off.

Subject: Unable to access folders in Outlook2016

Morning everyone, I went into outlook2016 this morning as normal and when I
went to move to a different folder I was unable to. Usually I do shift tab
from the list of emails in my main in-box and then either cursor down to the
folder I want, or press the first letter of the folder to select it, then
press enter to access the emails. When I tried that this morning I couldn't
access the folder list. When I pressed shift tab WE said "current mailbox
closed", I wasn't able to open it with the right cursor key, cursoring down
did nothing, pressing spacebar seemed to open some kind of menu, but I ended
up going round and round in circles not getting anywhere. I'm guessing that
Outlook has done some kind of update without asking me. Can anyone help?

Oh yes I'm running the latest version of WE and I've just looked and the
correct Outlook app and set file are both running.
Cheers
Yusuf

VFO and Microsoft

2016-06-18 Thread Martin Brown via Talk
The thing that worries me, is not the possibility that there might be less
choice of screen readers in the future, but that we will still have to
purchase a screen reader at all. If a company like VFO has acquired the two
largest screen readers in the assistive technology market, what does that
say about Microsoft's commitment to finally doing what they should have done
years ago: namely providing a fully functioning screen reader for its
disabled customers. It is highly unlikely that a company like VFO is
spending all that money if there was the slightest rumor that Microsoft was
finally getting itself a social conscience.
For all these years Microsoft has sat on its hands while others have taken
up the challenge of helping blind and visually impaired people find a better
quality of life. Thanks to the hard work of all the folks who have made
Window-Eyes and JAWS the great success they both are, we blind computer
users live fuller and more productive lives. However, I feel the time has
come when it should no longer be necessary for blind users to pay an
additional cost for being able to use the product of a multimillion dollar
company.
I wish all those who use, and participate in the production of adaptive
technology, in these changing and challenging times all the best which ever
way the wind blows.

windows 10 and demo mode in we

2016-04-04 Thread Martin Brown via Talk
Hello list. Hope someone can help.
A few days ago I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10. I had Window-Eyes 9.2
installed. The upgrade went very smoothly, and when the upgrade was complete
I then upgraded my Window-Eyes to the latest version of 9.4. I am running
Microsoft Office 365, and thus have the free version of Window-Eyes. The
problem is, now that I have upgraded to Windows 10 and Window-Eyes 9.4, I
can only run in demonstration mode. Can anyone advise.
Thank you.

Making a backup

2015-08-07 Thread Martin Brown via Talk
There has been a lot of talk on the list recently about upgrading to Windows
10. Some subscribers advocate, and rightly so, to make a backup of all files
and folders. The process of doing that is relatively easy. However, making a
backup of your entire C drive, which would include all files, folders and
programmes, on that drive is quite another matter using the Windows
operating system. I can achieve this easily using the Mac operating system.
Indeed, I can make a backup on an external drive which, should anything
happen to the internal drive on my Mac, I can boot easily from the external
drive.
Perhaps there is an easy way to do the same thing using the Windows
operating system which is accessible using a screen reader. If there is, I
would love to know how to go about it. Of course, making such a backup would
be useful regardless of upgrading or not.
Unfortunately, Microsoft has a long way to go when it comes to
accessibility. And yes, I fully understand that we are a small community in
the grand scheme of things. Nevertheless, the same thing applies when it
comes to Apple, but they really have done a lot to make their products
accessible to all those with differing needs.
Well done Apple, and shame on Microsoft for doing the bare minimum.

Google Docs

2015-03-15 Thread Martin Brown via Talk
Mark, in the most recent webinar, demonstrates Google Docs working extremely
well with Fire Fox. However, I cannot say I am having any such results using
Internet Explorer.Does Window Eyes 9.1 not support Google Docs in Internet
Explorer at this time?
