Probably not relevant, but how are you deleting the trash messages? Are you going through your context menu? you might want to increase your space that thunderbird uses go to. alt t for tools o for options and on the advanced section you need to choose network and disc space tab until you hear the amount of disc space and choose how much disc space you want to allow thunderbird to use. also you might want to compact all folders .
