[Talk-us] Limited import of buildings and addresses for Orange County, California
When I moved to my current city, I walked all the publicly accessible streets within several miles of my house to collect and map address information. And those buildings that I collected address data for I traced outlines using OSM compatible imagery. But there are private gated communities and areas farther from home that I was unable to access. So my mapping was far from complete. I recently noticed the MapWithAI data available for JOSM and see it has building outlines for areas in my city. Unfortunately they are horrible, worse than nothing. But that got me looking and I found that the county has a public domain licensed dataset with building outlines, building heights, spot elevations at building locations and addresses. [1] Looking at it, I don’t think the building outlines are good enough to be imported blindly. Each building will need to be checked and maybe up to a quarter of them will require some adjustment. That said, they appear to be much, much better than the building shapes available via MapWIthAI (which look like the Microsoft/Bing contribution). With that background, I propose to use this data county dataset to fill in the blanks within my city. My proposed workflow (and current status) is: Convert the county SHP file to an OSM file. Tag and value processing to convert the county’s fields to OSM tags including expanding abbreviations of street names. (Done) Create limited extracts of above file for areas I was unable to map locally. (Done) Work with others in the community to verify my proposed workflow makes sense and follows OSM guidelines (this email is starting that process). Editing workflow (yet to start): Select a street in my city that does not yet have all of its houses and/or addresses mapped. For each house on that street in the Orange County dataset: Verify that the building outline appears correct based on OSM usable imagery. Fix up as required. Verify that the addr:street value makes sense based on existing OSM and Tiger 2020 road data. If there is no node or polygon mapped in OSM, merge the building with address into OSM. If there is an existing node, verify complete address matches, then merge building and “replace geometry” to add building outline to OSM. If there is an existing building without address, copy the address from the Orange County data and place it on the existing building. Upload changes to street. Repeat for each other street in the city not yet completely mapped in OSM. I envision this as a slow process but one that should be doable by one person since the area is reasonably small and I’ve already mapped significant parts of it. If/when I get done with this, setting up an import for the rest of the county (breaking things into a grid of work to be done and using the tasking manager, etc.) might be in order. But I want to start small as I’ve never done this before. Questions: Do I need to setup a separate OSM user ID for this type of import. I will be spending as much time on review and verification on each object as I normally do for adding a building or address from a survey. Does this limited import require a dedicated wiki page? Should I remove the elevation from each building? I normally associate elevation tags with significant geographical/geological features (surface of a lake, summit of a mountain, etc.) having it on potentially hundreds of houses in an area seems unneeded and possibly unwise. Older imports usually added one or more source=* or source:something=* tags to each object. Is having the attribution in the change set okay nowadays like it is for “normal” editing? Thank you for your suggestions and guidance! [Talk-GB] Admin Boundaries and Combined Authorities
Hi, I think we need to discuss tagging of Combined Authorities. I spotted an edit that changed the tagging on West Yorkshire Combined Authority, and it was pointed out to me that there were already other instances of similar tagging for Combined Authorities (Greater Manchester for example). CAs have basically zero interaction with the public, except for the directly elected Mayor; although they have certain statutory tasks (public transport etc). They can be seen as a grouping of local authorities, as opposed to a LA in their own right. Should they really be tagged as boundary=administrative at all? Or should they have a parallel hierarchy as is used for police areas for example? If they are accepted as boundary=administrative, what admin level should be used? The LAs of which the CAs are composed are sometimes Metropolitan Boroughs with admin_level=8, and sometimes Unitary Authorities with admin_level=6. I am tending towards admin_level=5; this value is/was in use for the Regions, but they no longer have an admin function (if they ever had one) so I consider admin level 5 as "available" for use by Combined Authorities. An alternative may be to represent them as relations containing as members the constituent authorities. This would have the advantage of the ability (through the use of roles) to distinguish between "constituent councils" which are full members and "non-constituent councils" which only participate in certain committees. Any thoughts or comments?___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb
Re: [Talk-es] Edit war about names in Basque speaking regions
Right, knowledge of your OS source simply better informs the browser (environment) being used in the erring environment. In a desktop / laptop / non-mobile environment (let's say macOS / Windows / Linux, running Firefox on any of those is a fair comparison), our wiki pages present "Edit" and "Edit Source" choices, provided you are credentialed on with a valid wiki.osm.org login/pw. But instead, your environment (OxygenOS 10 running Firefox) presents this "Pencil icon." Somewhere (likely wiki.osm.org) there is likely javascript (probably informed by a UserAgent string of "Firefox — OxygenOS") which is responsible for (instead) presenting the "Pencil" icon (to initiate editing) along with a subsequent code-path in the javascript of the wiki site presenting what we now understand (or strongly believe) is a broken CAPTCHA, manifesting as a "Confirmation code" dialog. That's what's broken, I (we) strongly suspect. It took a few of us to get there, but I think we have, and those responsible for the fix are now better informed to do so. Good sleuthing all around everybody, my guess is that the "mobile environment" for editing on wiki.osm.org will improve and this will eventually vanish as the defect you experienced. Maybe mobile version is broken. 26 Jul 2020, 20:13 by o...@dead10ck.com: > Right, here is a screenshot: > > https://skyler-public.s3.amazonaws.com/images/Screenshot_20200723-175602.jpg > > -- > Skyler > > > On July 25, 2020 19:54:22 Michał Brzozowski wrote: > > >> Hi Skyler, >> You can use any image hosting site to upload the image, and then post a link >> here. >> For instance: >> https://imgur.com/upload >> Michał >> >> On Sat, Jul 25, 2020 at 6:50 AM Skyler Hawthorne <>> o...@dead10ck.com>> > >> wrote: >> >>> I tried to post a screenshot, but the mailing list has a max size of 40 KB, >>> which seems very small. >>> >>> I am on a OnePlus 7T with OxygenOS 10.0.11.HD65AA. [Talk-GB] [Fwd: Re: Surveying rural buildings]
[I found this marked as spam. It appears to have fallen foul of DMARC, which I know little about.] I got the name of the dataset wrong, bother. It could confuse a stupid person that the small scale version is VectorMapDistrict and VectorMapLocal is not a similar thing at large scale. Apologies, and thanks for catching it, Phil. The data I used were from Open Map Local -- I don't have access to the proprietary data. (I'm pretty careful about copyright, as a free software veteran, but obviously less careful about checking I have names right.) What's the best way to correct the source information in the relevant changesets? I looked at the wiki advice on sparse editing with JOSM but failed to get anything out of overpass with the queries I tried. The source will mainly be on a few changesets, but I may have tagged a few objects too. The answer is probably of more general interest; e.g. I found entries sourced from a university campus map which doesn't currently have a licence and I should correct as much as possible from remote local knowledge. --- Begin Message --- Dave, I attempted to send this to the list yesterday but it seems to have been blocked for some reason; I thought it was sufficiently important that I should forward a copy to you directly. Please acknowledge. Regards, Phil. Dave Love wrote: On Mon, 2020-07-20 at 11:29 +0100, Nick wrote: So my question is what are the preferred methods for surveying that others are using? I don't know about preferred, and it sounds as if you want something better, but is OS VectorMapLocal any use? OS VectorMapLocal is not Open Data, and I don't believe you should be using it for OSM. There are three Ordnance Survey products with similar names: Vector Map District is 1:25,000 and is Open Data. Open Map Local is 1:10,000 and is Open Data. Vector Map Local is 1:10,000 and is NOT Open Data. I don't think VectorMapLocal is actually listed on the wiki I guess there's a reason for that.
