[OSM-talk] Nokia N97
Friend is thinking of getting Nokia N97 Can it save GPS tracks for OSM uploading? Can you use OSM maps on it in any way? No info on N97 on OSM wiki. Cheers STEVE ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

You can use all the Java options available for other phones, which has options for both saving tracks and viewing maps, I believe. In addition to this, you can use programs written for the Symbian 60 OS. For saving tracks you have a few options: * Nokia Sports Tracker[2] - Saves to an internal format, but can export to GPX. * WhereAmI+[1] - It's been a bit crash-happy for me, but has features such as POI marking and photos. Also saves more complete GPX files. For viewing maps, I think you're limited to WhereAmI+, which however is particularly crash-happy (for me) when downloading maps. Uses vector data. As Jonas mentioned, the N97 has a decent support for Java ME and there are loads of good apps for Java, covering pretty much any needs including creating and uploading tracks, displaying maps either in vector or bitmap form, online or offline (depending if you have cheap internet on your phone), with or without routing and several other bells and whistles that may make your mapping life easier including some options for editing OSM directly on the phone. The fact that the N97 is a touchscreen mobile might limit your options slightly as most of the Java apps are written with a standard phone keypad in mind, but given that I believe the N97 also has a full keyboard, that shouldn't be a problem and in fact that can make it quite good for adding waypoints, or even directly editing the data. But more applications are starting to support touchscreen too and at least for GpsMid, I know we are trying to improve touchscreen support further. To help select amongst the various options, there is a comprehensive list of available applications that can be used with OSM on the mobile phone at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Software/Mobilephones with a good comparison of the features each supports. So as long as the N97 it self is stable, you should not have any troubles to use it with OSM. Since it supports Java, it should be able to use TrackMyJourney for the osm based maps (both vector, raster and routing).
