I very much appreciate your work and the work all other contributing to
this page. So thank you to all! Really.

[With the following statement: please don't get me wrong!]
BUT...

I don't like the fact that it is a static web page. That's another
static page in the Wiki which needs manual work and hence tends to be
not up to date. And we have the problem that translations of static
pages trend even more to be outdated and inconsistend compared to the
original pages.
You can see this with the famous map features page and the respective
translations.

So my suggestion ist:
this web page should be directly derived from CartoCSS eg. by a tool [to
be developed!] and use e.g. the same symbols/icons that are used by
mapnik (and stored in Github). Maybe the CartoCSS needs some additional
information that this web page can be generated = this would require to
be added there.
I know that this is a lot of effort to develop but anything else will
tend to be not accurate! Please start thinking about an automatic
generation of this page.

Just my 2 cents,
Michael.

Looking good so far.

Is there any plans to add Wiki page links to the areas section? atm it's
unclear what key to use in cases such as cemetery, what the exact
wording of the value should be.

Thanks for the work so far

I also added the beginnings of explaining lines, the most important

Now although the wiki page is still WIP it is at least complete enough

throughout the wiki, but I have probably missed some opportunities. So
please help me by placing internal links to this wiki page where it is
appropriate.

Nice work so far, but are the any plans on carto side and on the wiki
side to support the taginfo feature projects ?

All together we could leave the dumb work for the machines and use our
brains for the creative part.

On the wiki side I would like to have some extension of the taginfo box
or even an additional feature to better show the supporting software on
each tag page.

Cheers colliar

Why bother with PNG when we can have SVG versions? I will upload all of
my icons that are currently used by osm-carto in coloured SVG versions
to the wiki and collect them at this page:
 http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Nebulon42/Icons

(By the way it is easy to create a coloured Osmic icon collection like
 that by looking at
 https://github.com/nebulon42/osmic/blob/master/tools/export.md.)

I will also replace any existing new symbols in your key page with these
SVG versions. As I'm not able to replace all other usages of the new
symbols (maybe not needed yet?) I could use some help with that.

From the carto side not at the moment, see
https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/961 .

It is currently not possible to generate the list of supported tags
automatically, and nobody has volunteered to maintain the list
manually.

[OSM-talk] Wiki project: Article about the standard layer, with key

2015-04-20 Thread Wuzzy
I have created a wiki page about the Standard layer found on
www.openstreetmap.org

Here it is:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Standard_tile_layer

This wiki page is still a big work in progress.

Here are two goals of this wiki page:
1) Concentrate on user's view, not mapper's view
2) Give a brief description of the Standard layer and other information
of intererest.
3) Document all the map colors, symbols and lines. Also known as “key”.

I know that the homepage has already a key, but it is very incomplete
and outdated, most symbols (“points of interest”) are not explained at
all.

Does anyone want to help with this effort?

There are the following challenges:
- I want to have the pure, unaltered icons in their original size. Many
icons I found in the wiki are pretty outdated.
- If possible, the icons should be stored as uniform as possible in the
wiki. It looks ugly if all the icons are displayed in different sizes
- Documenting all the non-obvious stuff about the layer, such as that
private access things are drawn semi-transparent, etc.
- Keeping this whole thing up to date

You can help by:
- Extending the key
- Give advice if you know more about the inner workings of the Standard
  layer
- Uploading missing icons into the wiki
- Updating outdated icons in the wiki
- Adding more general information about this layer

I think Andy was also trying to create an updated map key, but I'm not
sure if he's still working on it. He used software he created for that
himself:
https://github.com/gravitystorm/mapnik-legendary

https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/blob/master/README.md
and
https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/blob/master/CARTOGRAPHY.md .

I think it would be good not to duplicate too much information.

 There are the following challenges:
 - I want to have the pure, unaltered icons in their original size. Many
icons I found in the wiki are pretty outdated.

Everything you need is in
https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/tree/master/symbols
.

 - If possible, the icons should be stored as uniform as possible in the
wiki. It looks ugly if all the icons are displayed in different sizes

I'm not sure what you mean by that, do the icons above help?

 - Documenting all the non-obvious stuff about the layer, such as that
private access things are drawn semi-transparent, etc.

Would be useful indeed, I'm afraid you'd need to read the source code for that.

 - Keeping this whole thing up to date

Yes, that would be the largest challenge. Perhaps a pseudo-automated
solution, such as legendary, would be the easiest to keep things up to
date.

 You can help by:
 - Extending the key
 - Give advice if you know more about the inner workings of the Standard
   layer
 - Uploading missing icons into the wiki
 - Updating outdated icons in the wiki
 - Adding more general information about this layer

I don't really have time to actively contribute to updating the page,
but I'm happy to help with any questions you might have (I'm one of
the maintainers of the Standard style).

All the source files for icons on the standard layer (and other visual
patterns) can be found here:

https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/tree/master/symbols

(shields for the different kinds of roads are inside the subfolder
shields).

The easiest thing to view them locally would be to install Git and clone
this repository. However notice, that we're in a process of transition
from PNG icons to pixel-aligned SVG icons. While the PNGs are exactly
what you see on the map, the SVGs are the source for transforming them
into real raster files (PNG probably), but I don't know how to do this
manually or where to find them in a transformed version.

The man behind PNG-SVG transition is nebulon42 (
https://github.com/nebulon42 ), so you can contact him and ask about
details.

As far as I know there's no documentation for what gets displayed and
you have to look mainly at the MSS files to find out.

Hope that helps.
