Re: [Talk-in] [datameet] How does OSM store its data

2018-02-04 Diskussionsfäden Devdatta Tengshe
Hi Nikhil,

The Database design has been documented here:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Database

This is, at its essence, a modified EAV Model(
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entity–attribute–value_model). A good place
to start researching for these kinds of database design, is to look at
various documents on EAV, its shortcomings & Strengths.

You should also evaluate if a NoSQL/Object Store database might be a better
fit for your purpose, than designing an EAV Data model to be stored in a
relational Database.

Hi Ashim,

If you use
https://github.com/datameet/maps/blob/master/Country/india-osm.geojson as
the URL, then it will try to access the HTML page.

You want the raw GeoJSON which is available at the following URL:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/datameet/maps/master/Country/india-osm.geojson

You can find the URL by clicking on the download button on the HTML Page.

Hi Akshay,

Have you looked at this:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/PlaneMad/diary/38176 ?

I used the steps given there to make a custom style (in Mapbox studio) for
India. Once you have the style, and want to use it in an Application, you
need to select the Appropriate Plan on MapBox. In our case, this map would
be inside an internal Enterprise Web Application, and hence we would be
purchasing an Enterprise plan.

2017-08-08 Diskussionsfäden Devdatta Tengshe
Hi Balaj,

I'm looking at FSMK GLUG for the first time, but I can provide some
pointers.

The app seems to be made with Basemap coming from a MapBox service and the
actual markers/pointers coming from the Data folder.

The easiest way to modify this for your requirements would be to make a
Service in MapBox and consume it for the Background (you don't want to use
the same service which they are using, since I believe it's coming from
someone's metered account and not a Public service.;

You can create GeoJSON online by using a site like: http://geojson.io/

What exactly are you trying to do? Is this a Desktop/Mobile App? or a Web
App?

If it's the later, then have a look at: https://switch2osm.org/

If it's the former, then you'll have to write some code to read and parse
the .osm file, which is an XML file.

You can get the list of enclaves in the actual 1974 agrement which was
signed, and is mentioned in the 119th Amendment of the Constitution.

You can get more details here:

This link gives the criteria:

http://censusindia.gov.in/2011-prov-results/paper2/data_files/kerala/13-concept-34.pdf

For a town, the population criteria is quite small. To be called a town, it
should meet all the following criteria:
1)Population exceeds 5,000
2)At least 75% of male working population is employed outside the
agricultural sector
3)Minimum population density of 400 persons per km

Greater Bombay was never officially an area, but the name probably became
popular due to the Municipal Body being called 'Municipal Corporation of
Greater Bombay'.

India has the concepts of Districts as the subdivision of states, and the
Mumbai Region falls under two districts of Mumbai City & Mumbai Suburbs.

The closest corresponding region would probably be the Mumbai Metropolitan
Region (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mumbai_Metropolitan_Region) But it
covers multiple districts, cities and Municipalities.

This policy is for the DST, and ISRO in particular. It talks about how
government agencies to create spatial data, and share it with the public in
an easy to consume manner. This Policy infact dilutes some of the
restrictions which were present in 'The Remote Sensing Data Policy',

Re: [Talk-in] Pincode Boundaries on OpenStreetMap for India

2016-03-19 Diskussionsfäden Devdatta Tengshe
Hi Shravan,
What data source would you be using for creating these boundaries?

As far as I know, no Authoritative Boundaries exist. In fact I'll go to the
extent of saying that you cannot have boundaries, because that supposes,
that the entire country is completely covered by mutually exclusive
pin-codes, which isn't true. Here is an article which also has a similar
position: http://www.georeference.org/doc/zip_codes_are_not_areas.htm

When people talk about pincode polygons, the real question which people are
trying to answer is 'which post-office services a given location?', and
there are ways to approximately answer that;

That could be answered by mapping post-offices and their pincodes, and then
trying to figure out which area is served by a particular post-office.

Anyway, that was my opinion. I'll like to hear what other people have to
say.

[Talk-in] How to tag Sacred Groves (Devrai) in OSM?

2015-08-10 Diskussionsfäden Devdatta Tengshe
I was asked this question by Nikhil, who works on open Data in Pune, and I
thought I should post this question to the OSM India Mailing list

A Devrai (Sacred Grove) is many things at once:
1. A place of worship
2. A patch of forest / woodland
3. A community-led biodiversity conservation hotspot

The continued preservation of many of these across the country has ensured
the survival of many species in regions where the rest of the area is
flattened farmland, water retention, etc. There is an ongoing effort by
some groups to identify and map these so they can be better placed to
protect them.

There are specific names for different Sacred Groves, usually dedicated to
a particular deity or identified as the local area's devrai.

How would one feed this information into OSM?

I could only figure out the following tags:
amenity place_of_worship
name Sacred Grove

but these don't seem enough. So could you suggest other tags that can be
used?

I'll be speaking tomorrow at the Datameet's Pune chapter tomorrow on
Spatial Data, and OSM's role in it. It's a nice way to celebrate OSM by
introducing more people to it.

Those that are are Pune, can join us tomorrow at 4.30 p.m. at Thoughtworks.
If you have not yet filled out the RSVP you can do so at this link

Hope to see you there!

Hi Sajjad,

This presentation looks amazing. Is there a Video version somewhere?
