The roads are 'largely' complete (meaning, as he said, still a few
missing ones). There is still plenty left like no right turns, but at
least it looks much better (last year there were whole suburbs
missing). I'll be able to do some when I go up to Armidale in October
(look for odd streets, complete Kootingal and Uralla, also add the
Kamilaroi walking track in Tamworth if the weather is OK), but if
anyone is up there sooner feel free to pitch in!

You shouldn't be so hard on him, there is a certain sense of
accomplishment in being able to say that the area has most roads
mapped and named, and that is no small feat, especially since there is
very few mappers in regional areas, and distinct lack of aerial
imagery that can be used.

Sometimes it feels that there isn't enough acknowledgment of effort
some people are putting into mapping, I've put some thought into how
to improve this situation but so far I haven't come up with much.

If youre still adding streets, then the mapping is hardly complete. How
do you define complete? Do you include the foot/bike paths? Do you
include tracks in the area, such as firetrails? What about slip lanes,
one-way streets, no right/left turns, crossings, etc?

There is always new stuff to map and little things to fix :)

But I had a quick look and it now is a lot more complete than when I
saw it last so good work on that :)

I doubt she'd be copying it verbatim, more likely she's using it like
a street directory for route planning and will use a GPS device for
the location and can survey for names on signs at the same time.

Sorry to be a party pooper, but do you think Lonely Planet would be

[talk-au] Tamworth, NSW

2010-04-11 Thread Ben Kelley
Hi.

Just a quick note to say that the street mapping for Tamworth, NSW is now
largely complete! http://osm.org/go/uY9yYCV--

This includes Westdale and Calala.

On the todo list are:

   - Fix the odd missing street. (I keep finding them)
   - Fix a few missing street names
   - More POIs
   - Tag the cycle routes (for the cycle map layer)
   - Survey some of the surrounding villages (Kootingal and Nemingha both
   need more work)

Thanks to the people who have helped out with this.

  - Ben Kelley.

The combinations of things are different to those in tourist brochures.
Tourist brochures have more overall, but this gives me more ideas again.

All you have to do is visit tourist information centres, these would
make a good POI as well, and you can usually pick up hundreds of
pamphlets for the immediate area, and some centres also have
information for other areas as well.

[talk-au] Lonely Planet

2010-04-11 Thread Liz
I bought a Lonely Planet book of Oz today. I thought that I would use it for
POIs - to try and put things on the map that are in the guidebook, as this
would make OSM more attractive to tourists.
I'm not starting at A and continuing to Z - just the places which I visit as I
travel around (preferably paid).
