[talk-au] Coral Sea Islands Territory and Queensland
I came across a dataset by ga.gov.au that has among other things a boundary shape file for the Coral Sea Islands Territory (CSIT), which surprisingly enough lined up perfectly with the existing Solomon Islands border, the boundary data is either cc-by or OSDM which is a cc-by type/compatible license. I also merged the Australian maritime border with this shape file and fudged the PNG border a little, however now there is a bit of a gap between the CSIT and the boundary for Qld and I'm not sure if it's only federal territory or state territory... Re: [talk-au] Generating good looking PDF/SVG maps?
Hi. The Mapnik -> SVG -> Inkscape route is probably good for where the map needs manual editing. PNG isn't really going to work for any large sized map though. I will report back if I get anywhere. - Ben. On 19 June 2010 14:50, Sam Vekemans wrote: > And don't forget the team @ KDE Marble Desktop, has the ability to > save PNG at any map view. [talk-au] Tasmania imagery
Craig pointed to me to this site: http://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/listmap/listmap.jsp?cookieteststate=check&llx=13.0&lly=5116000.0&urx=712000.0&ury=5662000.0&layers=268 Which was in relation to better DEM information, but they also have half decent aerial imagery for most of the state, however the copyright license says for non-commercial use only and I have no idea if you use the imagery personally to derive vector information if that could then be uploaded to OSM. I thought I'd point this site out if most people weren't aware of it, but I'll leave that up to those interested in Tasmania to figure it out the fine print. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au
Re: [talk-au] ABS data and new license

The new license has a requirement for attribution so I don't think that's a problem. I think cc-by is ok, but cc-by-sa most likely won't be ok as the data won't be released under the same license in future. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

A little birdy tells me that they think the GA data may suffer similar problems to the SRTM data, in any case will have to look into the licensing, it may not be favourable even if the data isn't being uploaded to OSM. In the mean time we can play spot the unmapped islands, so far I've found several, including this one in SA waters. http://maps.bigtincan.com/?z=12&ll=-34.643,134.793&layer=0B000FTFF This island chain near Singapore: http://maps.bigtincan.com/?z=13&ll=3.130,106.104&layer=0B000FTFF And the first one I spotted was in NZ waters: http://maps.bigtincan.com/?z=12&ll=-37.290,176.258&layer=0B000FTFF ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

The only DEM that I know about is the 9second product from Geoscience Australia - http://www.ga.gov.au/meta/ANZCW0703011541.html It does cost $100 and probably has some stringent use/distribution limitations. You want the DEM to produce a hillshade or to derive contours from? If you want contours the Geo Data 250k product ( http://www.ga.gov.au/image_cache/GA8349.pdf) is downloadable. Re: [talk-au] Attributing points and/or areas
i much prefer the single object option ie move attributes to the polygon if it is mapped. Just want to make sure that if/when these mass imports are updated (ie caltex service stations etc) that any scripts will check both point and polygon features.
