Re: [talk-au] School Zones

2012-08-24 Thread Ben Kelley
I came to the opinion that a maxspeed tag didn't really capture a school
zone, even with complex time restrictions.

Possibly it makes more sense to keep using restriction=school_zone but as
others have pointed out, probably nothing reads these. I know some brands
of car GPS devices can warn you about a school zone, but I don't think
there are any that could get this from OSM.

For now I preserve these tags if I am editing a way that has them, but I
don't add them if they are not there already.

So... with the prospect of re-editing, and the uncertainty of the
maxspeed:(condition) proposal, this has lead me full-circle back to
thinking the simple [restriction = school_zone] tag is the most effective
method to mark a school zone for later refinement. We could include the
extended information (e.g. operational times and days) as either a [note =
...] (notes are not displayed to end users), or even a [description = ...]
(descriptions are potentially displayed to end users as text hints/guides).

Does anyone else have thoughts about school zones? I'm particularly
interested in whether we can come up with a method that is appropriate for
 all states.

I went through the same thought process as you, and came to the same
 conclusion.

School Zones only apply school days, so the times of application can't be
captured. They have different demerit point structures.

Obviously someone regards a school zone as distinct from a maxspeed.

OK, I have just imported the missing parts of the ACT border (changeset

Looks good Michael,

I have moved some points on the straight bit using information from some of
my GPS traces. One spot where my GPS traces don't indicate the border is on
the extension to Hugh Mackay Crescent. John, does your information of this
area (Bicentennial Natiuonal Trail) indicate where the border is?

BTW I'm doing a mapping run down to Melbourne this weekend, is there any
(small) thing anyone wants checked out on the way (back).

[talk-au] redaction cleanup - unusual water feature

2012-08-24 Thread Chris Barham
Hi,
I'm working on the post redaction checks from the rebuild server at
http://rebuild.poole.ch/job/29

And I'm a bit confused by this: http://osm.org/go/ueHoaPP9--

If you look at Bing imagery for this location it is composed of some sort
of inland harbour/marina/coastline/water feature which had previously been
mapped (rather elegantly too by the look of it), from Nearmap as source.
Post redaction there are the outline nodes left, and I'm was wondering how
to go about reinstating this coastline/water? Join up the existing nodes?
 Start again? What tags?

Cheers,
Chas

I would re-use the existing nodes. Regarding tagging I was about to
suggest natural=water but then I did some reading in the wiki. So I
think natural=coastline is the right thing to use.

There's a similar structure a bit south which is tagged as
waterway=riverbank - I don't think that's a good idea.

I'd join up the existing nodes if possible.

South-East Queensland has many of these canal systems in residential areas.
Take a look at the Gold Coast region for some tips if you want examples -

Miami in Florida might be another place to reference for such features.

I deleted all my GPS data from that area. Way back then, I didn't
foresee any need to keep it, as I do these days.

But my clear recollection from many trips to that area is that this gate
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/258492338/history is exactly on
the border. And that the border follows this fence-line (at least in
the vicinity of the gate):
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/69891320/history

Likely the final position I gave the gate was quite accurate. I mapped
that area on bicycle and tend to use the averaging feature on my Garmin
for 30 seconds or so to refine the position of nodes like gates.

Thanks John

I've moved the border closer to the gate, keeping the gate in NSW and the
trail in ACT. The border looks a bit crooked to me now, I'll have to do
some more work on it in a couple of weekends time.

As others have said , I'd re-use the existing nodes.

I'd probably tag this as natural = water
