The ones I looked at were http://osmcha.mapbox.com/45454430/ (the zig-zag
made me wonder?) & http://osmcha.mapbox.com/45454374/ (a nice straight
rectangular path?).

Andrew,

Good suggestion. I'd suggest go one step further, and help Niantic 
create some good press (and from their point of view attract users), by 
encouraging users to do good work for Open Street Map.


Lets ask, if we could potentially ask lots of Pokamon players to help 
OSM as part of playing a game, what would that look like?

No.

Even if you used a source we had permission to use, I would first add a
