Re: [Talk-in] So much to do, have so much of time, but lack direction : please help

2020-12-30 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Mayurash, Shibu,

Have a look at :
https://tasks.teachosm.org/contribute?difficulty=ALL=india
This is the same kind of mapping task manager as HOTOSM, but less "hot" :P
Please be logged in with your OSM login to see the maps in the projects
properly.

I've created the "India.MH..." series for mapping rural roads. Beautiful
countryside, just connect the state highways main roads etc to villages and
hamlets. And if you come across a habitation that has no place marker, pls
add a village/hamlet pin (no need of name) to it - really helps in other
projects that look for such pins to guide mappers.

I've created some video walkthroughs of these tasks to understand what all
to do, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlHt4CSqbX4

PS: Want to add a task of your district / area for mapping rural roads? Let
me know.

Re: [OSRM-talk] inject request to OSRM

2020-12-13 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Evangelos,

The actual OSRM is a backend api - you can see its docs here:
http://project-osrm.org/docs/v5.23.0/api/#

The frontend is a separate application made for demo purposes which uses
the same api.
Hit F12 to show browser console, go to Network > XHR. And then do some
routing on the map. You'll get to see the structure of the api calls and
work from there.

Re: [Talk-in] Need guidance in launching a HOT project in Bangalore for mapping the lakes

2020-12-04 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Nagesh,

Sorry for writing in late;
If you get your pdf/image maps geo-referenced on mapwarper.net or
elsewhere, here's a simple tool you can use to compare them with satellite
imagery etc, and also to compare them with each other:
https://answerquest.github.io/overlap-custom-side.html

Click at a spot of interest on the map to get exact lat-long-zoom coords
for your documentation.
The current view there shows two development plan maps of Bangalore that
had been geo-referenced and shared by some folks in datameet mailing list
some years back.

All the best with this project.

Re: [OSRM-talk] How to break a large geojson file into smaller geojsons

2020-10-19 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Chris,

Use the QGIS software, they have a way to break up shapefiles (goejson is a
shapefiles) based on an attribute.

Else you can always open the file in a text editor (get notepad++ or vscode
or sublimetext or so for advanced text editor) and break it up manually.

[Talk-in] Fwd: Road routing using openstreetmap data with OSRM

2020-08-15 Thread Nikhil VJ
[Re-mailing without the screenshot to meet size restrictions]

Hi folks,

I'd like to share about OSRM - Open Source Routing Machine. It can work
with freely downloadable Openstreetmap data to give a self-hosted
road-routing solution that's a drop-in replacement for many google maps
services (not that one you want the most, but many ;) )

I see a lot of promise in this and similar tools to help businesses and
organisations involved in transport, logistics, GPS, delivery etc to save
expenses. There is a huge amount of money Indian companies are sending out
of the country for geo-services - I'd like to see some of that retained.

Decentralizing is a key enabler here: Bringing down the base area makes
your OSRM program fast and light. So, instead of trying to load the whole
planet's OSM data or all of India's, loading just your region lets you do
road routing fast and cheap.
There's some technical hurdles to cross in learning how to set up and use
OSRM. Towards that, with lots of help in dockerizing from Srihari Thalla,
I've started a project on github :
https://osrm-decentralized.github.io/ with the
aim of making it easy for anyone to "roll their own" OSRM using some easy
docker recipes.

There's a live demo page here : https://osrm-decentralized.github.io/demo
If you have an OSRM instance serving an area, inviting to add your link to
this live demo.

For grabbing your state/UT's openstreetmap data, I've set up this resource
where you can get the latest data updated daily:
https://server.nikhilvj.co.in/dump/
(it's using older states shapes from a datameet repo, please share the new
JK / Ladakh UTs if you have)
If you want your specific region's osm pbf data to be daily updated and
available for download here, let me know and we might be able to work
something out.

Please share with people who might find this useful.
And (belated) Happy Independence Day :)

Re: [OSRM-talk] take only distance from route

2020-06-18 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Luiz,

Pls provide the exact structure of the API call you are making. There may
be some problems in that. One commonly repeating mistake is that people put
latitude first while OSRM needs longitude first.

Documentation : http://project-osrm.org/docs/v5.5.1/api/

And you will get the distance as part of the whole json response. Then you
have to use your code to extract the distance from that json. If you don't
know how to work with json, just lookup online; it's very easy. You can
paste your response into a "json beautifier" like tool to see the structure
in more familiar ways.

Re: [OSRM-talk] routing without a path

2019-11-28 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Peter,

At small distances we also experience unsuitably long paths drawn due to
various map artefacts that don't represent the on-ground situation fully.
Example: people can cross the road, they don't need to go that far for the
crossing (side question: is there an OSM tag for telling that this road has
"free crossing" all along it and people do not need to go to a specific
point just to cross?). Or, take the nearest entrance to the building - they
don't need to go all around the place from the outside.

We decided to do some post-processing instead of trying to mess with the
router.
Calculate D = Displacement by latitude-longitude pairs (as-the-crow-flies
simple Euclidean geometry calculation)

If D <= 500m, {
If the path given by OSRM is greater than D x 10 (or pick a suitable
multiplier), {
Then junk the path and just plot a dotted line from A to B. Assume
half speed for this portion.
  }
}

In your case you may have to divide the path you have into chunks and
evaluate each chunk.
But I have no clue on how to make this business accurate. All the best!

I can set you up with your own OSRM deployment on cloud server or your

It would take a few days to process all the trips.

There are some strategies like cutting down region size that we could use

Re: [OSRM-talk] Exclude bridge from OSRM calculation

2019-10-29 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Andres,

Instead of trying to actually remove the bridge data, why not instruct
(your own instance of) OSRM to avoid bridges when reading the OSM data?

Take a look at
https://github.com/Project-OSRM/osrm-backend/blob/master/profiles/foot.lua

I don't know right now about bridges, but I was able to enable pedestrian
routing over trunk roads by tinkering around in this file and then building
and running OSRM.

[OSRM-talk] Pedestrian Routing giving longer results due to gap calculation

2019-09-17 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hello,

I am implementing osrm-backend for pedestrian (foot) routing. I have
successfully built with foot.lua profile (modified to include trunk roads
<https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/334189/osrm-foot-walking-profile-avoiding-trunk-roads/334190#334190>)

..and am having a working osrm-frontend instance up to get results for
various inputs.

I'm running into a problem regarding buildings / premises.

In osrm-frontend, if the destination point is not on a known path, then
there is a translucent gap line drawn between the end of the blue route
line and the marked destination location.

I'd like to know if there is a technical term for this gap, and where in
the osrm code / config can we tinker with it.

*Example scenario:*

Destination location is inside a building / premises.

*Result 1:* Road distance = 300m, gap = about 20m

If I move the destination marker by just a few meters in, then osrm is
drawing a completely different route going all the way around. Now the
result given is:

*Result 2:* Road distance = 1000m, gap = about 10m

Please see this screenshot with both the results shown:
http://nikhilvj.co.in/files/osm/osrm-pedestrian-gap-1.png

So here we have a problem.

I have weighted my .lua profile by distance.

(changed `weight_name='duration'` to `weight_name='distance'` in foot.lua)

Giving result with minimum on-road walking distance is top priority for my
use case - entering in at the right point in the premises is not.

I would rather have the pedestrian walk a few extra meters inside the
premises, than having them walk an extra 700m of road (more than double the
actual).

It would have also been fine if the alternative paths (light blue on
frontend) had the shorter route with a longer gap, but even that goes away
here and the alternatives given are only worse.

I can't find any documentation for what to call this gap or how to affect
it via the .lua profile etc.

I'm guessing that the router is prioritizing this gap over all else ; hence
it is not considering the fact that the route distance is changing by a
whopping amount.

So what I want to do with my osrm-backend build:

- Make the router ignore the gap and simply prioritize by route distance
over all else.

OR:

- Add the gap length to the route length when doing prioritization.

I can understand that doing this would make the router not work for other
applications, hence I only want to customize my own instance to fit my use
case scenario.

Looking for some help on this matter. I can share the url's of my osrm
instances privately if someone needs for testing.

If it's not part of the standard options (I'm guessing not), even then if
someone can point me to where the relevant code is, or what is the
variable/function name of this gap, then I can take a crack at it myself.

Thanks, and kudos to the programmers that made this amazing tool possible.
The speed and performance is fantastic I'll add.

[Talk-in] Seeking help / resource persons for bulk data imports

2018-11-16 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Friends,

Craig <https://tasks.teachosm.org/user/Craig%20Dsouza>, Chiranjan (who
works at Pune Municipal Corporation under 100 Resilient Cities program) and
I <https://tasks.teachosm.org/user/Answerquest> have conducted some
sessions on OpenStreetMap in Pune, MH over the past month. One of them was
at Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, and another was at College
of Engineering Pune > Town Planning Department.

We have come across queries from people having great data, well curated and
institution-backed, that they want to contribute to OpenStreetMap. But they
do not have the resources and knowledge required to do so on their own.

We do not have experience in this, and the time we have on our side to put
into this will be limited. Looking for some resource person(s) who can
either instruct precisely (very precisely!), or take charge of and drive
the process.

After seeing through one import end-to-end we may develop more capacity to
do this on our own.

I will be attending SOTM Asia this weekend, let's meet up if you're there.
(Name: Nikhil VJ. OSM id: Answerquest. For phone num, see email signature).
Also inviting other people who want to do bulk data import, let's connect.

[Talk-in] Pune Mapping Parties 26,27 Oct #SoTMAsia18

2018-10-16 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hello mapping people,

We (DataMeet Pune chapter) are organising two events (Mapping parties) in
Pune, MH for talking about OSM and mapping some things, as a run-up to the
State of the Map Asia event next month.

1. Friday 26 October 2018, 4-6pm at Gokhale Institute, BMCC road
2. Saturday 27 October 2018, 2-5pm at GeoSpoc, Baner

The 26th one will have some urban and rural planning students from COEP and
Gokhale attending as major chunk of audience.
The 27th one will be non-specific.
Both events are open for all to join (and you're cordially invited!), we
will put up event links on meetup.com/DataMeet-Pune/ soon to catch RSVPs.
The sessions will be hands-on and participants will be asked to bring their
laptops.

I wanted to reach out to folks on this mailing list who are in Pune,
inviting your inputs and your involvement in conducting these events. The
main ways you can help is by:
1. Being a behind-the-shoulder guide and troubleshooter for the hands-on
mapping activities.
2. Being a validator on the mapping tasks we will do via tasking manager.
(this one's online so open to experienced mappers anywhere and will happen
post 27th, but let's interact once before you start validating)

We are collecting resources for sharing with participants here:
https://tiny.cc/punemapping (short link to this google doc
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FnwpPlas8j26O_YHPnxtoOpGgi0880k88fKWNUUyOGI/edit>
)
For mapping activities I am setting up tasks on tasks.teachosm.org. You can see
them here
<https://tasks.teachosm.org/contribute?difficulty=BEGINNER=%23SotMAsia18>.
Focus : tree mapping in Pune, rural roads mapping, settlements marking. We
will have limited time on hand so will aim to keep it simple.

>From my end, I'm just getting started with contributing on OSM (my profile
<https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Answerquest/>) and have mostly been
involved in it through the tasking manager. Done some work in leaflet,
downstream from OSM, and have benefited a lot from it. We did a small pilot
<http://tasks.openstreetmap.in/project/89> last year.

It would be great to have an experienced mapper at the 26th event come and
share about their experience with the audience for 2-3 mins (We've got one
for 27th). If you are one, please write back with your OSM profile link.

*Some specific queries:*
1. Can you share your story of using data extracted from OSM in a major way?
2. Can you share some location in India that is "pristine" for road
mapping? (ie, clear visible roads and not mapped yet) (share privately so
its still pristine on event day :P)
3. Is there some specific use case for an urban planner or rural planner
that you can share? (preferably an Overpass Turbo query link?)
4. Can you share any timelapse to show OSM India coverage over the years,
or similar resources? I have a 3D globe one but it only glances by India
briefly.

PS: tasks.openstreetmap.in would have been ideal, but there's a blocking
issue <https://github.com/osm-in/osm-tasking-manager2/issues/14> there
right now so using another platform for now.

[Talk-in] tasks.openstreetmap.in is down

2018-08-01 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hello,

Apologies if this is a repeat post.. I'm not seeing these mailing lists
often.

The India HOT Tasking Manager site http://tasks.openstreetmap.in is not
working when we try to login. Getting a generic error message

> "The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was
unable to complete your request."

And at some places, advertisement popups are spawning, there might be some
malware scripts at play.

A fellow mapper who had been participating in our project
<http://tasks.openstreetmap.in/project/89> there just wrote to me about it.

Other tasking manager sites I checked are up and running properly.

[Talk-in] How does OSM store its data

2018-02-04 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi,

I want to learn how OpenStreetmap stores and manages its data, plus how
Overpass Turbo extracts it.

I find the key-value pair system fascinating (variable fields, organic
building up of data) and want to replicate that elsewhere. Just the data
storing part.. don't want to generate map tiles etc.

Any pointers? Any place I should ask?

For those interested, here's a link to the project I have in mind:

Re: [Talk-in] Mapathon as a part of OSMGeoweek (Nov 12-18)

2017-11-15 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Chetan,

That's great! All the best for the event!

We're organizing one in Pune the weekend after, on Sat 25th Nov.
Event link: https://www.meetup.com/DataMeet-Pune/events/245114878/

We'll be focusing on mapping roads in rural Pune District.
We have loaded the village shapes to HOT Tasking Manager,
http://tasks.openstreetmap.in/project/89
So mappers can go village by village.
The activity is open for joining in now itself.

[Talk-in] Seeking advice for tree mapping using OSM

2016-04-06 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Friends,

I want to find out how to bring integration into OSM or similar in tree
mapping / tree census exercises.

Some non-negotiable requirements are:

   1. The data we pool in remains extractable for all, the way we can
granularly extract OSM data using overpass-turbo; doesn't get locked up
anywhere *even if the survey/census is incomplete*.
   2. It's possible to build up over time. So the trees we map this summer,
   a few months later a team could curate that data with more fine-tuned info;
the mapping exercise will not need to be done all over again. Or, growth /
decline of a tree's height/canopy can be tracked yearly.

I'm using Overpass Turbo to extract OSM data,
and running this query in the wizard:
*natural=tree | natural=tree_row*

As of now, in my city's central area, I can find a decent job of basic tree
mapping done for one of the main public gardens in my city (like this
). But these only have the
most basic key-value pair in them, so far.

I want to know what are other key-value pairs etc I can use to put relevant
data in.
Some parameters I expect we would need:

   - local name of the tree species
   - scientific name of the tree species
   - height of the tree
   - canopy area
   - date or month of observation of above two properties
   - A URL to a photo of the tree that one might upload on imgur.com or so.
   - year of planting if known
   - was it transplanted (after sapling stage) from an earlier location
   (yes/no)
   - custom code / serial number assigned by the surveying group so they
   can keep track.

Following on from requirement#2, there will be a wide variance in what data
is recorded first and what will have to be left blank to add in later. Our
solution needs to make room for this variability.

Next, I want to learn how to upload a set of data at a go rather than one
by one points. For example, we would have a table/spreadsheet with all the
above parameters as columns and a latitude and longitude column. How do I
upload that table to OSM, mapping the columns to the relevant fields?

>> So can anyone help with figuring out the above?

As of now, the groups I want to do this with (reforestation, local tree
care-taking, environmental education, school projects) aren't aware about
OSM or the fact that data can be granularly extracted using it, so they
probably haven't tried it out yet. But I think this would be a perfect fit.
I want to figure everything out on the computers-end and give them a neat
and tidy process that they can adopt and integrate without needing a degree
in IT or a diploma in GIS etc.

PS: http://trees.metastudio.org is also a very promising platform, but
still I want to explore how one might go about this in OSM all the same;
and besides, the export feature isn't working on my end as of now, and bulk
upload isn't directly doable either.

[Talk-in] Telangana state boundary missing imp metadata

2015-12-17 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hello,

I came across this key-value pair while checking out state boundaries:
is_in:country_code=IN

..but it's missing for Telangana.

So in overpass, if I'm looking at Telangana and I run this query:
boundary=administrative and admin_level=4 and is_in:country_code=IN
... then all states except Telangana get highlighted.

I'm new to this all and presently can't understand how one can edit a
large element like this (browser editor asks to zoom in to small area
before we can edit.. I could add in some roads but whole state
boundary I can't see any way to edit). So can someone who knows pls
bring all the Indian states in sync?

Telangana: http://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/3250963

for refrence, please see the metadata of some other states:
