Re: [OSM-talk-be] Nice visualization of how old buildings are

2014-01-09 Thread Pieter Colpaert

Hi Glenn,

I thought it could be an easy way to give a demo to Belgians of why open
data and mapping is awesome. If it's too much work I would indeed not
bother with it, yet Waag society said they can do it fairly quickly, as
long as they have the data.

Kind regards,

Pieter

They said we can do the same thing, as long as we have the shape file
of the buildings (probably kadaster) as open data and the year the
houses were built. The latter is available in the dataset of CRAB, as
we know when the number in the street was registered.

Is this feasible for BE? We can load our data in their system :)

Kind regards,

Pieter

Asside from being pretty cool, what added value does this represent
for OSM, directly on indirectly? There is still tons of the most
basic work to do (maxspeeds, housenumbers, blanks to fill in). It
would still be a massive undertaking as CRAB buildings do not map 1 on
1 on OSM data.

It is cool, I aggree... but what is the real reason to want this I
wonder?

I like it, don't misunderstand, but I've been checking some buildings in
Amsterdam, I used to live there. And almost all red buildings are
constructed in 1005 according to that information. Now, I'm pretty sure
that the number of houses in amsterdam reaching the age of 1009 years is
quite low...

I really do like the map, in fact I'm stealing some idea's from it as we
speak, but it should be accurate, like this we don't know the right
ones from the wrong. I'm going to check in depth later after earning
my bread money for today ;-)

Greetings,

Glenn

Kind regards,

Pieter
