Yes, starting with adjacent areas to south and east.

Looks good.

It is nice to see more people importing the GeoBase data. Are you going to
be doing more areas in BC?

[Talk-ca] 092g07 imported and uploaded

2009-05-31 Thread Michael Barabanov
This includes parts of Burnaby, North Vancouver, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam,
Port Moody. See on OSM:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?minlon=-123&minlat=49.25&maxlon=-122.5&maxlat=49.5&box=yes

I've also captured my notes at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/More_details_on_GeoBase_import_processand
fixed minor details in
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Geobase_NRN_-_OSM_Map_Feature. If people
think the additional notes are useful, I can merge this info into the
description on the main Geobase import page.

BTW, I've compared the NRN data to Canvec, and found that NRN data is more
up to date (some new streets are only present in NRN).

[Talk-ca] CanVec update -victoria mapping party

2009-05-31 Thread Sam Vekemans
Hi all,
a quick update.

I got together with the 2 other top mappers for this NTS tile area;
092b06, (a .5x.25 degree area (i think off-hand) and went over the
canvec import data &process with everyone. We brainstormed ideas, and
here's the results.

1 - for all of Canada, every tile that has osm data, extra care is
needed. (priority is always given to the OSM data) and only the
original mapper who traced or hand drew features can decide on if the
feature should be replaced.

2 - All those mappers need to be contacted, and invited to a mapping party.
The aim is that all local mappers get invited so that we can be
looking at the data at the same time & deciding who does what, and
exactly how it gets imported.

3 with the CanVec data, we examine the 'accuracy tag and the date of
acquisition. We compare it against the osm trace & yahoo imagery & gps
tracks & local knowledge. (this cant be automated, as each
feature/trace varies.)

4 the script used to make the canvec.osm files is still in BETA, as we
want to make sure that all default tags are right. -we dont want to
find out later that i entered the FID tag or another tag wrong, or a
big spelling error. 1 mistakes is magnified 30,000 timer over.

5 i'll make a zip file for each tile that will contain 1 file which is
all the features combined to 1 area, and have each feature file also
available. I'll include a local osm area file, with the latest data,
so it will be easy to get an update of your area.

6 what we can do is right down on a wiki chart who the mapper are for
each area (the main contact person)

7 sample area update (Ucluelet, BC) the aim for the next week is to
get a majority of the features loaded and rendered. So more people
can comment.
Also to make tiles available to everyone, i should have the major
cities tiles available soon. (im just a little hesitent, incase errors
are found)

9 oh ya, the west coast trail will be loaded soon, so if anyone wants
to beet me at making a tourist map for the trail & wiki travel
article, the race is on!

10 - and finally, im updating the Ucluelet area, and experimenting to
see about file size to see what i can get away with without bogging
down the OSM servers, (while at the same time, examining the area to
check data quality). So then for the later .osm files that need to
be loaded, i can merge it ito 1 layer, and do that bulk upload thing,
heres one of the change sets
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/1364745
(check the history of the area to see the rest) ...

11 - it seems that anything under 1 meg of data is ok to upload using
JOSM. (less than 50,000 things)

Thats all for now,
Cheers,
Sam Vekemans
