Re: [Talk-ca] Road and Trail Maps available for Ontario, Canada at no cost

2009-09-03 Thread Sam Vekemans
Hi Talk-ca list,
cc: Albertson, Carol Anne (MNR) carolanne.albert...@ontario.ca,
cc: SteveC st...@asklater.com,

Just a quick note to let you know that I'm faxing off a (myself) signed copy
of the Unrestricted Use license agreement(1), and once thats received,
I'll be able to analyze the data to make some sense of it. My guess is a
few weeks. (lots of stuff on the go.. but its fun).

The easy one is that the attribution tag will be attribution=Ontario
Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR)**

I'll create a Wiki chart similar to the ones i did for canvec, listing what
all is available. And what tags should be used, then we can debate it.
It's assumed that this data is better than the trails available from CanVec,
(since its more direct).

So if anyone also wants to help out, please let me know than we can get it
done faster. And of course, still, the import guidelines(2) are followed :)

Thank again SteveC for forwarding the info.

Cheers,
Sam

 Thanks Steve,
 and thanks Carol Anne!

On behalf of the talk-ca list, we take that as confirmation and we'll
post it on the Ontario wiki page.

I'll add the Trail Data file for ontario to the Master Canada Import
 progress Chart.

If anyone wants to make up the source tag (ontario_trails2osm) tags
chart, please let the talk-ca list know.
Its on my list of things todo. :-)

The trail data for Ontario should (most likely) be better than what is
in the CanVec set. Since (odds are) the CanVec data would be older. If
its 1 big (or a few big) shp files, i'd recommend going with manual
coping with the shp-to-osm.jar (slow steady beats fast messy, but
 thats just me. :-)

 thanks again!

  Hi,

I am not sure if you are accessing Provincial or Federal warehouses
for data but currently Ontario road and trail data can be accessed
at no cost at Land Information - the data layers are Ontario Road
Network and the Ontario Trail Network. The Provincial data is
available in a GIS format and can be converted to your proprietary
  mapping. Please visit http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/

If you are looking for Canadian Road data I would also suggest you
go to Geobase http://www.geobase.ca/ where you can directly download
data freely for Canadian roads and other data. The provinces are
working with the Federal government to provide data at no cost to
users. Shortly street names and address ranges for Ontario will be
  available through Geobase.

Sure, i'll try :-)
right now im brainstorming (thinking outloud on email) on solving the
'root problem'.

its 'The technical learning curve', Because making a better GUI, folks
who want to be vandels skip that 1st step.

Its the 'community-user-inyour-face' which is our strength. :-)

As soon as they realize exactly who we are, they would have 'incentive to stop'.
-ie. We are going 'against the grain of Copyrighted maps' Pirates
charting a new course. The worlds greatest hackers, working together,
to make 'windows in its frame'. To make $ for software a thing of the
past.

These are pritty good incentives for a junior hacker to want to work
with the 'in person' pirate community.

We blow them of their port side maties.
We are not a single country, $/£/€ makes no difference. We throw our
map in a bottle, and cast a sea. (along with a link to the wiki) so
only the 'brains' of the crew can desypher the code.

You wouldnt have a newbie release a new update of ibuntu would you?

We even have the Audacity to allow mapArt to go ahead and use OSM data
on their maps, but just ask that they put 'data provided by
OpenStreetMap.org and Contributors'

Now to turn the above into a persuasive essay.

Cheers,
Sam

 Richard.

Re: [Talk-ca] [OSM-talk] Yathusan vandalism

2009-09-03 Thread Sam Vekemans
Let me guess, reverting the deleting of Nanaimo roads? (i guessed right)

BTW, rest of Canada. Vancouver Island is the guinea pig for the rest
of Canada. I figure that at least if all the 'wedgies' are ironed out
over here, it will save on the rest of Canada being imported messily
:0) Since there's a TO NE of data available, messing up an island is
much better than messing up all of Canada. The local mapper Jamie is
well aware of this, and anxious to get it fixed too.

I think that this shows a valuablabe point. That as soon as the road
data is imported, it attracts more users. So when Canvec is dropped
in, it needs to be done in 1 tile session as complete as possible.
This will avoid frustration the next day when someone else goes to the
map.

Austin, if you have time, can you make the 092f01 to 092f04 geobase
roads available?

Because the western half of Nanaimo isn't available, only the 'old'
CAPS roads still are there. It confuses people as to which road data
to use.So if all the 'corrections' (me removing the caps roads) in
1 sitting, it would have helped.

Anyway, I plan on visiting Nanaimo later this month, and hosting a
mapping party. with all the local area users.

Cheers,
Sam
