[Talk-ca] CanVec Import

2010-12-31 Thread Olivier Hill
Hello all,

I would like to remind everyone not to blindly import CanVec tiles on OSM.

I have recently seen tiles uploaded blindly, duplicating nodes and
duplicating features that were already imported (like wooded areas,
lakes, rivers, etc.)

I know it is tempting to see more data on OSM, but dirty data has no
value. Uploading tiles in batch is not crowd sourcing either as it can
be easily done with software.

Personally, I prefer less data but with better quality than having to
validate everything that has been imported again and again. This can
of course be discussed here, others might have different opinions.

Now, private messages have been sent to specific authors. If no
answers provided, we will have to make the choice to revert the
changesets or not.

Thank you for your understanding (and inputs).

Best regards,
Olivier

Probably the best thing to do is wait for commonmap.

I agree with Olivier,

It certainly needs more effort but the result is there. Blind import never
helps. It just mess-up with others work.

Blind Canvec import could have been done by NRCan, messing-up all the work
done by each OSM contributor. It doesn't help the project to have the
impression that our work is not respected because a bunch of data is dump
over what we have already map...

Cheers,
Daniel

Re: [Talk-ca] CanVec Import

2010-12-31 Thread Olivier Hill
Thank you Daniel.

The situation you are describing is exactly what is currently being
done in 031G08, and I'm not too happy about it.

Features from CanVec have been modified since, and re-imported on top.
This has the consequence of destroying the many contributions done by
people around the area.

Personally, seing this makes contributing a complete non-sense for me.

The CanVec data is gold and I'm thrilled you and NRCan makes it all
possible. However people need to realize that they can take that data
and manually import it, making a decision along the way which features
are still accurate and which features were already mapped.

Anyhow... time to celebrate new year's eve ;)

Thanks,
Olivier

Re: [Talk-ca] CanVec Import

2010-12-31 Thread Andrew MacKinnon
Sorry about this.

I accidentally imported duplicate features in 031G09.1.3 (Lachute)
that should be removed now unless I missed a few.

Lachute seemed to have been mostly mapped by a user called JeanRob98
in 2009 (badly - there were many roads missing the street type such as
Rue etc., there were many ways crossing with no nodes, many
unconnected ways, etc.) and I was trying to clean it up. Aside from
importing CanVec OlivierHill seems to have made only a few minor
contributions in this area.

To all contributors: PLEASE update the CanVec Import Chart on Google
Docs if you are active in a certain area and you don't want other
contributors doing imports in a certain area. (I think that
acrosscanadatrails can give you write access to it if you ask).
