[Talk-ca] POI import to OSM from POI-Factory.com

2013-05-12 Thread Dustin Dauncey
Hi there,

I've been editing OSM for a little while now and feel comfortable enough with
editing. I'm also in IT so I am comfortable managing lots of data and
importing/exporting large amounts of data, etc.

I was just thinking the other day that there are many free POI files maintained
at a site called POI-Factory.com and it includes major POIs like McDonalds,
Starbucks, Costco, Walmart, etc. From what I could tell in the licensing from
that website, it appears these POI files could be used to fill data in OSM.
Perhaps somebody could double check that?

If we can use that data, perhaps we can utilize these to populate the maps with
a lot of the common POIs for users.

I've never imported anything in bulk to OSM and when reading up on how to, it
suggests contacting the community, so I'm hoping this is the right venue to
discuss. I'm in Canada myself (BC) so I picked the Canadian list since most of
the POI files from the website are for USA and Canada.

Your guidance would be greatly appreciated. Basically I just want to verify if
it is possible (and legal) to use the POI files from POI-Factory.com and import
them into OSM, etc. If so, then how exactly? I saw an article mentioning
importing using JOSM after converting the file to an .osm format, which I'm
sure I can figure out as well.

Thanks guys.
