Re: [Talk-ca] GNS tag cleanup

2014-02-14 Thread steggink

Hi Paul,

gns:jog refers to the sheet number of the Joint Operations Graphics
map series.
gns:mgrs refers to the Military Grid Reference System, which is
nothing more than an alternate representation of the coordinate system

IMO both these values can be safely removed.

I don't know about the other ones. Perhaps you can find more
information here: http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/

About 6 years ago, a set of data was imported from GNS, consisting of place
names, mainly of place=town.

As an example, see http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/52556192/history

Thy have a few tags, many of which can probably be safely automatically
eliminated by editor software.

Using the example node, I think the following should be added to the
automatic removal list in editors

gns:dms_lat=490200
gns:dms_long=-1224900
gns:lat=49.03
gns:long=-122.816667
gns:n:xx:full_name=White Rock
gns:n:xx:full_name_nd=White Rock
gns:n:xx:modify_date=1993-12-14
gns:n:xx:sort_name=WHITEROCK
gns:cc1=CA

I'm not sure on the following. Anyone know their history, and if they're of
any use to OSM?

gns:adm1=02
gns:dsg=PPL
gns:fc=P
gns:jog=NM10-08
gns:mgrs=10UEV1340031177
gns:n:xx:nt=N

Re: [Talk-ca] GNS tag cleanup

2014-02-14 Thread Adam Martin
Hey all,

Figured I look, for the codes mentioned on the GNS site and save others the
trouble.

ADM 1 Codes
First-order administrative division. An administrative area directly
subordinate to the pertinent governing authority.

CC1
Country code. CA being Canada.

DSG
Feature designation code. Comprised of two to six character code to
identify what type of feature this is. In this case, PPL means Populated
Place.

FC
Feature Classification. Designed to allow similar features in GNS to be
grouped together and searched for.

JOG
Joint Operations Graphic Reference. This is a specification determined by
the US Department if Defense to ensure that graphical representations of
the feature (maps) treat the item in the same manner.

MGRS
An alpha-numeric system of expressing UTM/UPS coordinates.

UFI
Unique Feature Identifier

UNI
Unique Name Identifier

RC
Region Font Code. FOr determining the equivalent characters used in GNS
sorts rendered in Roman Script. 1 means Americas and Western Europe.

n:xx:NT=N
NT is the Name Type and N means Approved.

The rest mentioned are self-explanatory. Very few of these codes appear to
hold any meaning for the OSM database as it sorts the data based on it's
own tagging references. As such, they should probably all or almost all be
removed from OSM.

Oops. Meant to send this to everyone.

[Talk-ca] CanVec updates without a version bump

2014-02-14 Thread Paul Norman
I was having a look at New Westminster in tile 092G02.1.1, and
I noticed that there are differences between CanVec 10.0 which
I downloaded when it came out and what I just downloaded from
the CanVec webpage, which is also labeled CanVec 10.0

Addresses have been added, and with them, errors introduced.
Although I'm not opposed to adding addresses, adding a new feature
like this obviously needs discussion and review, and I checked imports@
and it doesn't look like this happened.

Who's our contact at NRCan these days? We need to make sure that the scope
of what's getting imported is clear and that additions get properly
discussed.
