[Talk-ca] Fort McMurray Fires: CanVOST update for Friday

2016-05-06 Thread Heather Leson
Hello here is the promised update from the for the Fort McMurray fires.
Summary: the canadian governments haven't asked for crisismapping yet. Step
by step.

CANVOST - this is a group building partnerships and lines of communications
between digital contributors and Canadian government officials. The goal is
to be a Canadian Volunteer network like our allies in the US (VOADs and
VOSTs)

There are details in the note on how to join this mailing list.

I am happy to introduce anyone. Given that I live in Qatar it would be best
if someone in Canada is the liaison.

Thanks

Heather

Considering that our current mandate from AEMA is fairly limited (but
important) to Social Media monitoring, message amplification, correcting
misinformation etc. as outlined previously, we do not see an immediate need
for mapping and other tasks. This is directly related to the official
mandate/needs from the AEMA. Of course, we are all free to carry on doing
the work we do to aid citizens directly and I encourage it.

This is CanVOST's first direct engagement with an official agency here and
they have limited the scope of our contribution to essentially the
activities that we exercised with them last year.

Though we know that with all our partners such as yourselves we could bring
more to the table, we are happy to complete the mandate and satisfy our
larger goals of building the trust relationships with government,
demonstrating the value of our collective contributions, and refining our
activation and workflow processes.

That being said, as the situation evolves we are ready to step things up if
AEMA comes back with new requests and a wider scope of work.

We will be reaching out to the PIO's in various EOC's tomorrow to better
our integration with current operations and refine the products that we
supply.

CanVOST has organized it's work schedule, will reach out to other VOST's,
and if anyone from your organizations want to help out with the tasks at
hand for a few hours Patrice would be happy to welcome you on board. Just
contact him directly. patricecloutiermc...@gmail.com

I will message again if things change.

Please contact us if you have any questions or feedback and thank you for
all the support.

Re: [Talk-ca] [HOT] Fwd: Re: Fort McMurray forest fires

2016-05-06 Thread Russell Deffner
Thanks for the info Paul, sorry to hear (when the ‘probability of ignition’ is
high near me, I live on constant edge of when will that evacuation call come).

Another aspect of why and when HOT responds, isn’t necessarily geographic based
– it’s based on ‘how well is OSM already mapped’ and ‘what kind of local OSM
community exists’. In both Canada and India, there is a great local OSM
community; and I looked at the area around Fort McMurray – it’s pretty much
mapped. The Uttarakhand state/province in India seems to lack buildings, but
the road network and populated places is pretty good.

Of course there are many in HOT and on this list that can help set-up exports
and connect response and aid organizations. If there is any direct need for
anything, we also have Members who are leaders in these local OSM communities
and can also help connect folks.

Sincerely,

=Russ

Fort McMurray is the 5th largest city in the province of Alberta and has been
evacuated in the face of wildfires which have burned thousands of structures.
Satellites have been tasked to gather imagery, but it probably won't be very
useful imagery for OSM until the smoke has cleared.

My guess is there won't be a HOTUS activation associated with this disaster.
The HOT work people have been doing so far is mainly improving the state of the
area in OSM with pre-disaster sources.

If anyone gets openly licensed imagery for the area, I can host tiles from it.

I've created a task on my tasking manager for buildings in Fort McMurray.
Tracing buildings can help us flag buildings affected by the fire

I know DigitalGlobe are tasking thier satellites over Fort Mac.

I think we'll have to wait until the fire is put out before we get satelite

What I can do is create a task on tasks.osmcanada.ca for Fort McMurray and we
can trace buildings as they are not all there

Is any freely licensed aerial imagery of the affected area available

Hello,      Looking at Esri's world topo basemap in Fort McMurray you can see that the building footprints are very complete. It could be a redundant use of our resources to obtain pre- fire imagery to digitize buildings. Almost anyone could create an app with ArcGIS Online to do Assessment of building damage. Bernie. Also, what are we going to try to achieve once the fires are done? The roads are already there and Canada/Alberta have advanced spatial capabilities and detailed data for official purposes, so the work would basically entail deleting burned down buildings.
I'm willing to help out, just not clear what the goal with regards to data is going to be. :)

Hello
Let me know if you want me to connect you to the emergency managers in the area. I will give them a heads up that you are talking about it

Two of them are big fans of osm so they might help. But i leave this decision with you.

You might get some help from UrtheCast, as a Canadian company they might
be willing to donate access to footage.
https://www.urthecast.com

Not sure that they can provide geo-referenced shots, but any info might be
of use. Their cameras are fixed on ISS, so any orbital software/website
will tell you if/when they have near passes.

They also have a live feed:

Cheers,
Simon.

construction.http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/370283029

Cependant, il n'y a aucune sortie au nord connectant avec la section existante
de la
route.https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/3789965528#map=15/56.4932/-111.2973

Une section au sud de Fort McMurray est highway=trunk, puis au nord, primary.
J'indiquerais pour la section au nord trunk et même motorway pour une section.

[Talk-ca] WeeklyOSM 302

2016-05-06 Thread Jinal Foflia
The weekly round-up of OSM news, issue #302, is now available online in
English, giving as always a summary of all things happening in the
OpenStreetMap world:

http://www.weeklyosm.eu/archives/7426

*Among others:*

   - There will be server maintenance works on 9th and 10th of May. OSM API
will be read only during this time, therefore you cannot edit OSM. More
information and updates can be found at the OSM Wiki.
   - OSM for the dyslexic is released, read more about it in here.
   - Registration for State of the Map in Brussels (23rd-25th of September)
is possible now. Prices for early birds are 75€ for active community
members and 180€ for everyone else. Additionally it's still possible to
   sponsor the event!
   - Cheap ruler of Mapbox is a collection (JavaScript) on methods for
length, area and angle calculation. Read in more for why is it called
   "cheap ruler".
   - Read more about new tools like OpenStreetMap Analytics for
   visualization.
