[Talk-ca] Input wanted - Open Gender Monologues

HI colleagues,

I'm writing to ask if you would like to share about experiences around
gender in OSM. We are looking for a wide range of voices and ideas.

If you feel like you can share publicly (online or in person) or
anonymously, we welcome your guidance. Details. Perhaps you can also share
with your networks?

We are hoping to collect input by July 25th

Thanks again and hoping to see some Canadians at SOTM :)

Hi

Maybe the osm ca community could set up an adhoc call or working group to
see how this can help all your efforts?

I'm not in Canada for the foreseeable future and don't have the bandwidth
but this might be a good way to build the relationship.

Excited to see how it plays out.

[Talk-ca] Fort McMurray Fires: CanVOST update for Friday

2016-05-06 Thread Heather Leson
Hello here is the promised update from the for the Fort McMurray fires.
Summary: the canadian governments haven't asked for crisismapping yet. Step
by step.

CANVOST - this is a group building partnerships and lines of communications
between digital contributors and Canadian government officials. The goal is
to be a Canadian Volunteer network like our allies in the US (VOADs and
VOSTs)

There are details in the note on how to join this mailing list.

I am happy to introduce anyone. Given that I live in Qatar it would be best
if someone in Canada is the liaison.

Thanks

Considering that our current mandate from AEMA is fairly limited (but
important) to Social Media monitoring, message amplification, correcting
misinformation etc. as outlined previously, we do not see an immediate need
for mapping and other tasks. This is directly related to the official
mandate/needs from the AEMA. Of course, we are all free to carry on doing
the work we do to aid citizens directly and I encourage it.

This is CanVOST's first direct engagement with an official agency here and
they have limited the scope of our contribution to essentially the
activities that we exercised with them last year.

Though we know that with all our partners such as yourselves we could bring
more to the table, we are happy to complete the mandate and satisfy our
larger goals of building the trust relationships with government,
demonstrating the value of our collective contributions, and refining our
activation and workflow processes.

That being said, as the situation evolves we are ready to step things up if
AEMA comes back with new requests and a wider scope of work.

We will be reaching out to the PIO's in various EOC's tomorrow to better
our integration with current operations and refine the products that we
supply.

CanVOST has organized it's work schedule, will reach out to other VOST's,
and if anyone from your organizations want to help out with the tasks at
hand for a few hours Patrice would be happy to welcome you on board. Just
contact him directly. patricecloutiermc...@gmail.com

I will message again if things change.

Please contact us if you have any questions or feedback and thank you for
all the support.

 Dear All,

The Toronto bid for State of the Map 2015 was not accepted, so we
won't be hosting State of the Map 2015 in Toronto.

I want to thank the hard-working members of the Toronto bid team; you
enabled us to assemble a wonderful bid on a preposterously short
deadline. Well done, and thank you for committing your time and
experience and for believing in our goal of hosting the best
 OpenStreetMap conference ever.

Thank you also to the many vendors who were able to meet our request
for quotes on the aforementioned preposterously short deadlines. They
delivered on time. Thanks further for being so patient and
understanding when the Toronto bid team had to ask for extension after
extension to the proposal period when faced with missed deadlines and
 non-decisions from the SotM-WG.

There will be an official announcement from the State of the Map
Working Group some time soon with other details.

 Best regards,

 Richard

Re: [Talk-ca] HOT in Canada

2015-01-22 Thread Heather Leson
Bonjour/ Hi

Sorry for my delayed response due to the upcoming move. Pierre, your
leadership in HOT for activations and for community work is so key. Merci.

I've long felt that the work we do internationally as CrisisMappers could
be used at home. Richard Weait once mentioned at an OSM Toronto meetup
that it would be a great to have OSM translated into local languages in the
North. Stewart, Charles, Pierre: I think that a proposal to map Canada to
support our northern friends with community mapping parties and youth
engagement would be an amazing project. It is long overdue and I think you
are the ones who could make this possible.

The Canadian government is supporting the large Open Data conference in
Ottawa. Surely, this might be an amazing place to get more allies and
funding support (if needed). http://opendatacon.org/

About HOT
I received a few notes offlist for the Missing Maps connections. Thanks so
much.

See some of you hopefully tonight at Maptime in Toronto.

Thanks again,

Heather

 villages.

Is this remote mapping, or would it be considered ‘in country’? The
state of some of the northern communities in Canada is a disaster, and
it makes me ashamed to be Canadian.

   Stewart

Slightly off topic, but a new member of the Montreal community should be
in Kuujjuaq right now. We discussed how he could acquire gps data before
he left, so we might get some good ground data in a couple weeks.

I agree though that we could do more, now, by mapping imagery for the
 northern communities.

 Cheers,

 Charles

[Talk-ca] HOT in Canada

2015-01-16 Thread Heather Leson
Hello

I'm relatively new to this list but not OSM, so an introduction. For the
past 5 years or so, I've been active in the Humanitarian OpenstreetMap Team
(HOT)[1] and CrisisMappers Network[2]. As an organizer and supporter, my
role also includes being a member and on the board of HOT. We have our own
HOT mailing list. There are a few of you who may be collaborating on global
OSM projects. (Thank you). Some of you may even be on the HOT list or
contributed to some of the humanitarian activations.

I know this is a talk list for Canada, so I will explain why I posting. HOT
is involved in is the Missing Maps Project with Medicine sans Frontières
and the American Red Cross [3]. This project has regular event in the UK
and is starting to do so in DC. My colleague at MSF asked if I knew of
other Canadians in HOT. He posted to the HOT list and did not reach many.
So, I offer to connect with you. They have an organization who would like
to help support a Missing Maps event in Canada (city is really about who
can help and community capacity). Richard Weait is already doing two
popular, regular mapping events in Toronto. While based in Toronto, I am
moving countries in a few weeks (so I can't help organize).

If you are interested, please do get in touch off list. I want to respect
the list topic and your times.

Thanks and happy mapping,

Heather
