Re: [Talk-ca] BC Resource Roads

2012-11-13 Thread Sam Dyck
Resource Roads are tricky for me. They often have access restrictions and
may be closed and barricaded once a lease expires or a forestry block has
been replanted. (at least in Manitoba) I use either
highway=track
tracktype=grade3
or
highway=path
FIXME: verify accesibility by trucks and ATVs, may be blocked

http://osm.org/go/Wt2D1rA
Shows some logging roads I mapped a while ago. These roads will likely
exist as cutlines for 10+ years after logging operations have moved on, and
some roads will continue to be maintained by the government as fireguards.

Ultimately I don't think you can go wrong with highway=track unless you
know the road is barricaded to block vehicle access.

[Talk-ca] BC Resource Roads

2012-11-12 Thread Paul Norman
I was importing some CanVec in northern BC and came across a resource road
on bing, which I also added, but I realized I wasn't positive on the best
tagging.

A typical example is
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=59.395lon=-122.074zoom=16

These roads exist for forestry and oil and gas use. In this particular
region they're primarily built for accessing oil and gas leases and have
trucks running to/from the wells. They aren't generally used for through
traffic.

They are almost always unpaved but maintained to some minimum standard.

There seem to be to be three obvious tagging choices (aside from
highway=road which is never wrong)

highway=track
tracktype=grade1

highway=service
surface=unpaved

highway=unclassified
surface=unpaved

I am in favour of the first (track with tracktype) but would like to get
some thoughts from others.

As an aside, these roads are not in Google, CanVec or any other sources I
quickly checked.

Re: [Talk-ca] BC Resource Roads

2012-11-12 Thread Brian Gamberg
 In Newfoundland, they're called resource roads, and while they are maintained
in the summer, they are not plowed in the winter. So, in the winter they are
only used as skidoo or ATV trails. How about proposing a new tag like
highway=resource-road ?

 Incidentally, geofabrik's OSM inspector flags highway=road as an error (Under
the highways category).
