Re: [Talk-GB] oxford uni is not using OSM anymore
Is there someone from Oxford University who can shed some light on the real reason for the decision to/not to use OSM? I've tried to get in touch via the website, but got directed to an external company who haven't replied. Hi Matthew, Apparently it was mostly down to organisational reasons - we reluctantly changed it on their behalf, as two members of OUCS staff had invested time in the OXPOINTS project and wanted to put it to use: http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/oxpoints/ Understand. Still, OSM has more up-to-date mapping of Oxford and university (buildings, walks). Could having an optional OSM layer on Google Maps interface be a solution? It's trivial to implement and I'm happy to help;) For an example see: http://media.mapnik.org/oxford-osm.html. As a secondary reason, there were reports that OSM felt slower than Google - whatever that might mean. I'm not sure either. Could be OpenLayers vs GMap JavaScript. - Matthew (developer at Torchbox and part-time Charlbury Code Ninja) Artem (who thinks OUCS should use OSM) ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk-gb ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk-gb -- Nick Black http://www.blacksworld.net ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk-gb

I've forwarded your question onto the team here in OUCS responsible for OXPOINTS (who also have some advisory role in the Oxford website, though don't get to make decisions) to see if they can shed any extra light. Re: [Talk-GB] UK spam(ish) - result for walking and cycle paths
Andy, You'll soon get the chance because it was announced on the lunchtime news that Connect2 has won! The 5 years referred to is laid down by the Big Lottery as the time within which all 79 constituent projects of Connect2 must be complete. We hope to complete the Two Tunnels Greenway within 3 years - maybe earlier. I would be happy to give anyone interested a guided tour of the route as it stands - ie without the tunnels open, requiring a hike over big hills - and when the route is open. They mention it taking 5 years, but it would be nice to hound them with GPSs whilst they progress their projects. Another potential area to show why our model rocks, perhaps.
