Yes. We do have hosting. Geolytix is sponsoring a 1GB cloud server with
DigitalOcean. I have setup the one-click wordpress site for now but we
can of course setup any combination of apps on that server.

Re: [Talk-gb-london] London tube stations

2016-07-05 Thread Harry Wood
Hi Bjoern

I work for TransportAPI, and we're working on a project with TfL at the moment
actually. TfL is like a massive government organisation though, so I have
contact with one tiny part of TfL, which doesn't necessarily help. Also...
because I'm working on a project, I have a set of priorities which we have to
be seen to be working on, which doesn't necessarily fit with the conversation I
would really like to have with them: "open data gimme gimme gimme!" :-) But
obviously I'll be dropping OpenStreetMap into conversation whenever the
opportunity arises!

A couple of years ago I had a brief interesting conversation with a TfL bigwig
around the time they decided to swap all the web mapping operation to use
google maps. They had been in conversations and negotiations with google about
this (which is interesting in itself. Pretty sure google doesn't bother talking
to most people, but I guess they do for someone the size of TfL). He seemed to
suggest that the TfL folks were pretty anti-google and would've loved to choose
OpenStreetMap, but "there's no clear contact point", in other words they
couldn't get into the same kind of corporate conversation with OSM. Makes me
wonder what kind of organisation could be formed to provide such a contact
point (OSMUK?). In truth they could have had a pretty productive conversation
with TransportAPI or ITOworld about this, but I guess they wanted some sort of
more of a "horses mouth" conversation with map makers. Maybe it will always be
difficult OpenStreetMap to provide that kind of corporate comfort blanket.

Anyway... the data...

That's quite some detail in your "case study" there.
http://bjohas.de/wiki/Maps/Kings_Cross. I was going to link you to some
interesting things, but I see you've found most of them at he links down the
bottom.

One to add is this neat thing (not open data sadly) :
http://stations.aeracode.org 3D spinny diagrams under some tube stations.

I came across that years ago, and pondered whether we might be able to generate
something like that from OSM data. I dismissed the idea at the time because it
seemed like too much detail, and too much messy data underground. But these
days we're putting a lot of detail in, and talking a lot about accessibility
mapping. I feel like we might be getting to the point where we could try it. It
would reveal some interesting bugs and limitations of our level tagging I'm
sure.

On the subject of detail levels, here's another neat thing (not open data
sadly) : http://carto.metro.free.fr/cartes/metro-tram-london/
This raises a question which has always been a bit awkward in OSM data. The
tube system is (so far... for the most part...) represented in OSM as single
tracks. This means we wouldn't be able to generate a map like that, which is a
shame, although it makes the data much easier to work with for other purposes.
I remember we used to also try to route the ways through a node for each tube
station. I remember that was quite contrived at Baker Street where the
platforms are near the surface and geographically quite spread out. These days
we're just going for more detail, and grouping by a relation:
http://osm.org/go/euu4Hn~xP-- ...I see that has meant a bits of the circle and
metropolitan line end up being drawn in as dual tracks.

I guess the single vs dual tracks thing will become an issue when modelling the
inside of *any* tube station, once you get down to the platform level. Maybe
it's time we double-up on all the tube tracks. But I'm not sure. It'll get
messy.

Deep 3D examples like Kings Cross are fun. But we also need to check breadth of
data across the network. Starting with the basics, we're doing pretty well on
station entrances: http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/h97 , but maybe not all of them.

Hi all,

I've got a couple of questions:

(1) Is anybody else interested in mapping some of the more complex London tube
stations?

(2) Do any of you already have a relation / ongoing discussion with TFL?

Background: I've been mapping a few things in the King's Cross underground,
mainly adding underground passages to get to platforms. If you're interested:
I'm working on a write-up of the discussion on the tagging list, as a kind of
"case-study", see http://bjohas.de/wiki/Maps/Kings_Cross. I'll contribute this
to the OSM wiki once I've got clarity on all the tags, and will reference it
from this page:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/London_public_transport_tagging_scheme

On the whole, I was surprised that there don't seem to be detailed maps
available (e.g. of King's Cross underground) that show access lifts, stairs vs.
escalators etc. Such maps don't seem to be available from TFL or anybody else.
The closest detailed descriptions seem to be
