Re: [Talk-GB] Addition of Wikipedia links in German!

2012-11-04 Thread Colin Smale

WARNING: CHECK YOUR BOUNDARIES!

Longbow4u has been causing other problems with these edits as well. In
Kent the boundaries of Ashford and Shepway districts have been emptied
of ways. The addition of wikipedia links is continuing apace, sometimes
in English, sometimes in German.

This changeset seems particularly problematic:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/13577241

I have sent him/her a message requesting them to repair the damage to
these boundary relations and have suggested rolling back that whole
changeset might be a good place to start.

to add a tags such as wikipedia = de:Portsmouth

One can't help but wonder what the point of such tags are (an indeed website),
as any intelligent web search based on the name of the object (and +wikipedia)
and maybe UK or the county will usually takes to one the web site (or
wikipedia) of that item and probably in the right language too...

(even if I often tag POIs with websites myself...)

This sort of automatic search linking would be much web 2.0, than the pile of
URL related values in the DB.

I think it can be useful because the article name isn't always just the OSM
object's name value. Leaving it blank could either mean one should just
use the name value, or that nobody has paid it any attention. Better to
make it explicit.

I am baffled by this one
 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/13567143, amongst many others.

Anyone able to ask why in a politely worded German email?

Looks bonkers to me. Have you tried sending them a polite message
asking them what what the purpose of the links are that they're adding?

Cheers,
Andy

It was quite succinct, so maybe not that polite.

Re: [Talk-GB] Addition of Wikipedia links in German!

2012-10-21 Thread Robert Norris

because of the WIWOSM feature in Wikipedia. By adding one link to a
Wikipedia-Article (which language is not important) on the relation of
an administrative district, the area will be marked in the maps of some
wikipedias (de, it, es etc (however, not yet en)) as a field. Find more
information to WIWOSM feature here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WIWOSM

You can see this in action if you open the England article in the German
wikipedia and click on Karte link on the top right.

Best regards
Longbow4u
But I still think it would be better to put wikipedia=en:ENGLISH_NAME for
places in England.
