One thing very noticeable from looking at Petrol Station tagging in the light of Ilya's Shell data is that name, operator and brand are used in wildly inconsistent ways across the UK.
Personally I use: - *name*: if there is a displayed name of the form XXX Service Station. Sometimes I will duplicate the brand tag if there is no displayed name (largely because I am unsure whether CartoCSS displays brand or not. Note it looks that it does not <https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/1874>) - *operator*: I hardly ever add this tag except for supermarkets (my local Waitrose petrol station has Waitrose staff and receipts, but is branded Shell), those places where the operator is clear from other businesses on site (e.g., motor dealer, car service/repair), and when the operator/company names is present n FHRS data. - *brand*: for supermarket brands and big firms (Shell, BP, Esso, Jet, Murco and (mainly in NI) Applegreen, Go, Many petrol stations are privately owned business which franchise the brand identity, it is rare that they are owned and operated by the brand owner. These days most do not make much use of the name, which once would have been in fairly common usage, so it's not too bad to use the brand name in name. The biggest problems is the operator tag. This, for some reason, has frequently been used for the brand. (see v. long tabulation below). I would suggest that we can improve the dataset of UK fuel stations substantially by tidying up the tagging.
