I missed earlier emails on this subject but have had a quick play now.
Instructions seem very lacking. Why do I get the option to add an OS
OpenData polygon when the school is already mapped? That is likely to lead
 to duplication.

* display all osm features not just polygons
* import log which prevents double adding and gives feedback to the user
* no import of blank values

the tags on the way?

In the example changesets above, it is adding the website key with a blank
value. I'm not sure blank values need adding.

The changesets could probably use "source" tags to show where the data has been
added from.

When I clicked on "Add to OSM" I thought it might both add the multipolygon and
open my default editor to allow me to trace buildings within the polygon, and
any other details visible from Bing. Is this possible?

You need an account on http://api06.dev.openstreetmap.org/ to test the
 application
It will not modify any data on the live server only on the test server!
You can test away without being afraid to destroy anything.

A Test version is now available online at http://schools.mapthe.uk/
You need an account on http://api06.dev.openstreetmap.org/ to test the
application
It will not modify any data on the live server only on the test server!
You can test away without being afraid to destroy anything.

Yes this is the plan :-) I have to secure some hosting and deploy it.

Right now the product is still unfinished and I was looking for some

If you save the living environment, the biodiversity that we have left,
you will also automatically save the physical environment, too. But If
you only save the physical environment, you will ultimately lose both.

1) Don’t drive species to extinction

2) Don’t destroy a habitat that species rely on.

3) Don’t change the climate in ways that will result in the above.

Hi Christian

Would love to test your app but too much technical ability required for the
preconditions to run the app. Can't we just have a browser-based app that
ordinary folk can use?

[Talk-GB] Schools project: last week

2016-03-23 Thread Rob Nickerson
Hi all,

With one week to go we're at 79% of schools mapped. The total number of
amenity=school features has been falling in the last week as we continue to
remove duplicated nodes.

Let's aim for one big final push to get us over 80% and to get the total up
again.

[Talk-GB] Schools project update 4

2016-02-14 Thread Rob Nickerson
Hi,

A few updates on the school mapping project (sorry if I missed any, I've
been away from it a little so may have missed a few things):

1. Trial of Loomio
In the loomio trial we have decided to attempt a press release. Gregory has
got a great draft up already for review [A] and you can join the discussion
at loomio at [2B]

[A] https://hackpad.com/OSM-UK-Schools-Project-bcgTXlEJ0K3
[B] https://www.loomio.org/invitations/1f686576bce85c49f956

2. Mapping guide
One way to introduce new people to OpenStreetMap is via the school project.
There is now a picture based mapping guide. More guides are always welcome
:-)
http://www.mappa-mercia.org/2016/02/how-to-map-a-school-in-openstreetmap.html

3. More clean-up of duplicated data
Total number of amenity=school features has stalled a little at the moment.
Still lots of mapping activity so this is a sign of another round of
clean-up of duplicated ways.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1G9KXfp4Ho3fVROO9MxotcYTydl9CEXB_fi5ko2pM5Kc/edit#gid=1336142515

4. Plenty still mapping though :-)
This must just be a clean-up exercise as we still have plenty of people
mapping (often 20+ per day doing 150+ edits per day).

5. We hit 3000 new amenity=school features
Harry's tracker shows whether an edit to a school was a "creation" or a
"modification". We just hit 3000 creations !!

6. Inclusion of official reference
The total number of objects with edubase or seedcode references has topped
4000! Amazing demonstration of providing links to other databases. Would be
cool to see some tool that makes use of this :)

Happy mapping,
Rob

[Talk-GB] Schools project, testing Loomio, and the UK OSM group.

2016-02-07 Thread Rob Nickerson
Hi all,

I don't like asking people to sign up to yet another online service but I
think this *could* be really good.

TL;DR Please sign up to the following group to discuss how we can continue
to support the quarterly project:
https://www.loomio.org/invitations/1f686576bce85c49f956

=Full details=
I have set up a group on Loomio to focus on the quarterly project to map
schools. Loomio is a collaboration tool that puts a focus on making
decisions. In late 2015 I spent a considerable amount of time researching
collaboration and communication tools. This followed on from the results of
the UK OSM group survey [1] which showed that 45% of people wanted decision
making to be at the membership level for *all* decisions.

The question was "How do we deliver the ability for members to drive
decision making?" The basic option is to stick with talk-gb - this has got
us to where we are now but should we be looking elsewhere in order to
better connect with potential mappers/users?

My research [2] found that Loomio is up there with the best of the
alternate tools. It is open source and can be deployed on our own servers
(for now we use their hosting).

I would like to trial Loomio with the current quarterly project - schools.
I'm aware some people won't like the idea of moving away from talk-gb but
if you could give it a go that would be appreciated. The Loomio group is
public and you can set up your email alerts as you desire (similar to
talk-gb).

Link to the group:

Best,

Thanks Phil,

Looks like it is a 20 minute walk west from Piccadilly [1]. I've messaged
to check that there is time during the meeting to cover OpenStreetMap.
Would be looking for a basic intro to editing (perhaps with iD as that
seems to be the starter editor of choice now) and pointing in the direction
of the UK Quarterly project [2]. Would be good to demo how to find a school
that needs mapping (using the tools we have), then how to add a simple
amenity=school area to OSM.

I shall let you know when I know more.

Best,

Actually the completion list is actually a lot better than that. The
current process has problems with special cases which ARE complete as
best we can tag them, but the progress tool does not understand the
problems.

But it would be better to also display what percentage actually have
edubase or similar ID tags as well. That coverage needs more work yet.
I've hacked the current name check script and can identify those schools
that exist but without an ID.

Actually the way that the UK higher education structure has changed it's
possibly pointless today bothering with 'college' as a category. Many
'Technical Colleges' now call themselves Universities, and secondary
education now extends into the sixth form college sector. When a
University includes 'Hairdressing' or 'Car mechanics' then it's degree
status looks a little suspect? Even the Wikipedia article is tagged as
'Outdated' for 'Further Education' :)

That said, The remaining college sector does seem to be consolidating
with a well defined 'non-university' prospectus and the EduBase2
categories for University and College is probably an ideal division to
follow, and I was tagging sixth form colleges as College rather than
School following that tagging. The question perhaps is should the fancy
'Academy' Secondary school be tagged separately at all? Since these do
not have to include that in their titles ... The tricky bit being the
16-19 age range campuses. Of cause once the URN is included one can look
up the secondary data anyway.

Re: [Talk-GB] Schools project Closed Schools

2016-01-15 Thread SK53
There are at least 2 options:

1. Just delete them.
2. Change the base tag to one indicating that it is no longer a school: eg,
disused:amenity or old_amenity.

I prefer the second, as the former is always prone to be mistaken for a
missing data. Additionally old school buildings may get turned into private
houses, or adapted as community centres, so being able to identify the old
school can be helpful

The thing not to do is just add a disused=yes, see numerous wiki pages &
messages for why not!

Yes, I've made some changes to the tool at
http://robert.mathmos.net/osm/schools/ , but it's to the data imported
from OSM, rather than the (still very simplistic) matching algorithm.
I'm now including both relations and ways tagged with either
amenity=school or amenity=college. (Previously it was just ways tagged
with amenity=school.)

Looking at some of the Edubase data near to me, it's clear that some
of the institutions should be tagged as colleges in OSM. Also near me
are a number of schools in OSM that were tagged using multipolygon
relations to collect together individual ways that make up the
boundary. I've deliberately excluded nodes to encourage these to be
converted into areas.

The matching algorithm could certainly be improved significantly, and
hopefully I'll get a chance to look at this at some point later this
month. But in the mean time, the best way to ensure the right things
are matched to each other is to map any missing schools, retag any
objects incorrectly tagged as schools, and add ref:edubase,
ref:seedcode and ref:deniirn tags as appropriate.

Finally, if you haven't looked recently, you'll find some other other
reports and Overpass Turbo links at
http://robert.mathmos.net/osm/schools/progress/ , which people may
find useful for more Quality Control work on our Schools data.

Robert.

2. Matching algorithm updated
It looks like Robert W updated the matching algorithm shortly afterwards as
all percentages have seen an increase. London WC is now showing as 100%
complete but the detailed page gives another story. Don't forget to use the
ref:edubase (and similar) tags as Robert's tool makes use of these.

after an initial clear out of bad/duplicated data, the total number of
schools is on the rise. We are also still converting nodes to ways so
that's great too :-D

5. Department for Education tweeted us!
I'm hoping to get them involved :-)

Re: [Talk-GB] Schools project - update

2016-01-13 Thread Stuart Reynolds
There ought to be, somewhere - they are all required to be Ofsted inspected,
after all.

I searched Ofsted for Maids Moreton Pre-School, and it has a URN of EY476044.
EY in this case would stand for “Early Years”. I’ll go hunting for a database,
now!

Stuart

Re: [Talk-GB] Schools project - update

2016-01-13 Thread Dave F.

Hi

Is there a similar national database for nurseries, or would that be
controlled by individual local authorities?

Further comments in-line

A few updates for the schools mapping project. As always there is also
the page on the wiki for quick reference (
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/UK_Quarterly_Projects ).

0. Changeset comments
Don't forget to add #OSMschools to your changeset comments. I will ask
Pascal Neis for an updated "Who's contributing" dataset next week.

I've been adding this tag but will probably only retrieve the roughest
of data. I've often gone off on a tangent amending/adding adjacent
objects, realigning roads etc.

2. Robert's data by postcode.
Robert W has updated his comparison site to enable you to download the
schools by postcode data as a geojson. Example download URL is:

http://robert.mathmos.net/osm/schools/progress/B/data.js

Once downloaded, open the file, delete the first line ("var matched =
") and save.

I've already been using this data in P2 as part of it's 'Tasks' feature.
No laborious panning around!

http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Richard/diary/28267

Do any other the other editors have a similar feature?

I found it easier if I separate Robert's files into 3 for each
FeatureCollection: Matched, Unmatched & Missing. I also wanted to do
start with my local county rather than by postcode so I've used Overpass
Turbo to retrieve the relevant data: http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/dIG
(change county name>run>Export>geojson)

Cheers

[Talk-GB] Schools project - update

2016-01-12 Thread Rob Nickerson
Hi all,

> Cross post to talk-ie (we are working on a quarterly project to map
schools - feel free to join (see item 3 below).

A few updates for the schools mapping project. As always there is also the
page on the wiki for quick reference (
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/UK_Quarterly_Projects ).

0. Changeset comments
Don't forget to add #OSMschools to your changeset comments. I will ask
Pascal Neis for an updated "Who's contributing" dataset next week.

1. Calling all video tutorial experts
I've put out a call on Mappa Mercia's twitter (and now here) asking for
someone to create a very short "How to map schools in iD" video. I think
this will help with engaging new communities so if you feel up to the task
give me a shout :-)

2. Robert's data by postcode.
Robert W has updated his comparison site to enable you to download the
schools by postcode data as a geojson. Example download URL is:
http://robert.mathmos.net/osm/schools/progress/B/data.js

Once downloaded, open the file, delete the first line ("var matched = ")
and save.

3. Northern Ireland data
I have downloaded a snapshot of Northern Ireland "schools plus" data from
2016-01-12 and asked Robert to add it to his comparison tool.

Source: https://www.deni.gov.uk/services/schools-plus (go to the schools
plus site, click the "All institutions" button followed by the export link
on the left). It includes items in "schools" and "non-schools" grouping as
set out at http://apps.deni.gov.uk/appinstitutes/InstViewInstType.aspx If
you want a copy of my pre-processed data then let me know.

4. Isle of Man data
This is online if anyone wants it. Given it is a smaller community I would
prefer to encourage them to add it to the map. The video tutorial will help
here :-) Data at:
https://www.gov.im/categories/education-training-and-careers/schools-and-colleges/

5. ITO World map of schools
This map is mainly useful for OpenStreetMap contributors who want to ensure
that they collect names for all schools in an area. View it at
http://product.itoworld.com/map/6

Happy mapping

Re: [Talk-GB] Schools project - update

2016-01-12 Thread Rob Nickerson
Hi,

Robert W's comparison tool now includes schools in Northern Ireland. Looks
like it could do with some work as current progress is at 18.8%.

Comparison tool: http://robert.mathmos.net/osm/schools/progress/
More info: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/UK_Quarterly_Projects
Tag for including official reference numbers: ref:deniirn=* (note the
double i - stands for Department for Education Northern Ireland -
Institution Ref Number).

Best,
Rob
