Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Neighbourhood Plan Import

2013-04-23 Thread Philip John
there is little chance of the average mapper verifying them or interacting
with them

I've always thought that kind of thinking (not to belittle it, as it's a
valid thought process) isn't worthwhile - limiting features because we
can't imagine it being used is based on the limits of our imagination. Just
because we can't see it being used doesn't mean someone else won't, and
come up with something that'll solve a neat problem.

I would have thought, and I speak only as a passive OSM contributor user,
that making OSM a more comprehensive database is a good thing, tying
together all those disparate boundaries into one lookup, effectively.

The problem is where do we stop? The majority of present/potential boundary
data doesn't have a physical presence on the ground. Consider ONS Lower,
middle and other output area boundaries or the NAPTAN charging areas that
were added with the NAPTAN import. Arguably they are useful in the same way
as ward boundaries are but should they be in OSM? Because the number of
nonphysical boundaries or areas is potentially limitless I'm in favour of
keeping them out of OSM because there is little chance of the average
 mapper
verifying them or interacting with them (in relation to other objects).
Perhaps it's time to have nonphysical boundaries pulled from some other
 database?

 Hi everyone

Results from Birmingham Convention Bureau's hunt for venues is back with
quotes from Aston Uni, Edgbaston cricket ground, Ricoh Arena, Holiday Inn,
Clarendon Suite. Based on an attendance of 300 for a conference Fri-Sun
with setup time on Thursday the costs( which includes all refreshments and
 lunches) I estimate are:

 Aston Uni £24100
 Edgbaston Cricket Ground £35350
 Holiday Inn £31750
 Clarendon Suite £32000
Ricoh Arena was way out and subject to having a match on simultaneously so
 I discounted it

Other venues are still to reply

If we have a delegate fee of EUR 50 then that will raise £12000, if EUR
100 then £24,000 which gives us a manageable total to raise through
 sponsorship.

There will be other expenses which I put with a stab in the dark at £15000

All costs are ex VAT so we either need a charitable vehicle for avoiding
VAT or increase all the above by 17.5%

 Availability

 Aston 6-8 Sep
 Edgbaston 6-8 13-15 Sep
 Holiday Inn 6-8 13-15 Sep
 Clarendon 13-15 Sep

Aston Uni has by far the best connectivity facilities the cheapest costs
and is the most central - wins my vote (subject to what comes in today).
Only downside is availability - not ideal for dates to coincide with FOSSGIS

Let me know what you think. Andy R should I distribute to others outside
the W Mids who have shown an interest in helping us?

Re: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] National Memorial Arboretum this Saturday

As I live in Lichfield I was hoping to attend but now can't.

However, in the interests of boosting interest in and membership of
OSM/Mappa Mercia would it be useful for me to post something on my
hyperlocal site, Lichfield Live http://lichfieldlive.co.uk inviting
people to join in?

We have a micro mapping party proposed for this Saturday to the National
Memorial Arboretum [1] at Alrewas, Staffs [2]. I'm now available so will be
able to make it and I'll do a little planning this week to smooth the day.
It would be handy to get an idea of numbers who are planning to come along
so if you can respond to the list that would be great.

The NMA is a sobering place to visit so don't be surprised if you spend
 more
time reading the memorial details than mapping if you haven’t been before.
At 150 acres the site is far bigger than you can individually get around in
 one day and see everything.

The NMA has its own map which they sell for £3 together with a detailed
guidebook for £6.50. They also have a simple 3D map on their website [3].
Our plan is to improve our own detail and get as many of the memorials on
OpenStreetMap as possible (there are hundreds!)

Entrance to the NMA is Free (they encourage donation) and car parking is £3
Pay and Display. Alternatively you can cycle to it by taking Route 54 from
Lichfield/Burton [4] and looking out for the signs to the Arboretum through
Alrewas or Fradley. Suggest you plan the route first as the Sustrans cycle
signs are not that easy to spot. The quiet route signed is through Fradley.
Note there is no access from Alrewas directly to Croxall Road, you have to
use the main Burton Road (A513) instead.

There is a visitor café/restaurant on site which is where I suggest we meet
at 10am (they open at 9) and also would be the logical place for lunch
unless you bring your own sandwiches.
Note that the site is quite exposed and can be bracing when windy so be
prepared for the weather on the day.

 Cheers
 Andy

 Hi everyone

Here's a suggestion for what we should get up to this summer - based on
what people felt was OK at the April meeting and also some invention from
me. I've tried to make the monthly meetings accessible by rail and also to
get the Birmingham residents moving out nearer to other mappers who trudge
regularly into Brum in the winter.

 ** **

Andy and I also discussed possibly contacting mappers in Birmingham
Alabama to see if we could accelerate their map with some armchair mapping

[Talk-gb-westmidlands] Feedback on first unassisted changes

2011-10-25 Thread Philip John
Hi all,

I've just uploaded a bunch of changes to expand on some I made with Andy
Mabbett's assistance (thanks Andy) many moons ago.

They are all based on the development at 52.6799280, -1.8239728 and as this
is the first time I've performed any edits I'd appreciate any feedback you
have (if you have time to look over them).

If I'm on the right track I have a couple of GPS traces to add on too.

Thanks!

@Ed - Thanks, I think I'll stick with highway=path. Although the developers
drawings show some sort of cycling utopia there's nothing to suggest they
are especially cycle routes.

@Andy R - George Road? Nope, sorry! This is the City Wharf development in
Lichfield, off Cherry Orchard.

Thanks!
