Clifford,
We'll said. OWNERSHIP of your home turf would be a good subject for you to
present at the SOTM 2018. It would appeal to those of us "unpaid mappers"
who attend SOTM. All the 2017 sessions were interesting, but few related
directly to how I map.

[Talk-us] SOTM2017 schedule & housing

2017-09-13 Thread Alan Bragg
Thanks Ian,
I've been looking at that web site once a month since I bought my ticket
and never noticed you have to click on the sheet of paper in the upper
right corner to see all the important information. I was feeling pretty
stupid but then found that at least one other person had the same problem.
A clickable link might get the information out to others like me.
Looking forward to SOTM Boulder.

[Talk-us] Western TIGER Roads

2016-06-03 Thread Alan Bragg
I've tried to fix TIGER roads near Show Low AZ
http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=14/34.3565/-109.7752
where my daughter has a cabin.

I could not reach her cabin in my high clearance van so I called it a
highway=track.

The best roads appear smudgy black because they've been covered with
volcanic ash.

Most of the roads are only drive-able up to the last building.

Many of these roads have signs with name and often a number. I'm told a
number prefixed with a C is maintained by the county and those prefixed
with a N are not.

I have read the wiki
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/United_States_Unpaved_Roads_Tagging

Is there any other resource? Maybe some links to well tagged areas.

I'd appreciate someone letting me know how to improve my tagging.

Re: [OSM-talk] Promoting OSM through the media (Bryce Nesbitt)

2015-11-25 Thread Alan Bragg
I liked Bryce's excellent idea to comment on a news story by linking to a
OSM "node". Following the link gave a reader not only the location but all
of the detail of his changeset.

I tried this today by linking a news article to a "way" encompassing a
controversial housing development in my town. My link added context to the
news article that only included the lot numbers. Next I'll contact our
local editor and see if I can link to articles before they are published,
maybe I can teach her how to make the links.

I'd like to hear more ways to promote OSM. What's yours?

Ian, Thank you, I received the instructions 10 minutes after I posted to

after watching the video at

It amazes me how much there is to learn about OSM. I learn the most by
reading http://www.weeklyosm.eu/ which I receive every week by email.

[Talk-us] Viewing Zoom Levels

2015-08-26 Thread Alan Bragg
How can I view the current zoom level in the JOSM editor or at the basic
OSM website openstreetmap.org

Zoom levels are defined as numbers (1-19) at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Zoom_levels

I read a lot of messages talking about viewing details at at specific zoom
levels.

The only place I see zoom level displayed is on my Galileo iphone app.

Thanks,

TIGER tracing layer updated to 2015 release

Last week the US Census Bureau released the 2015 version of TIGER. This
afternoon I updated the data in the set of tracing tiles that Mapbox hosts.

As before, at zoom level 16 and up, it shows the complete TIGER streets,
and at zoom levels 12 through 15, it shows TIGER minus dynamically
subtracted OSM so you can more easily find TIGER streets that are missing
 in OSM.

The tile URL has not changed, so if you are using iD or another editor that
pulls from editor-imagery-index, you already have the new data. If not, you
can manually enter the tile URL:

Note it has a two step process, install the plugin, restart, go to

have a visible effect, but you probably have to do it.

After that it works as advertised now.

 Greetings,

A couple of weeks ago I reached out to many of the OSM account holders
that are in my area hoping they would be interested in creating a local
community for mapping southern Maryland. I found a few victims and so
 we're pressing on!

I'm still working on all the logistics (website, listserv, etc) but I have
created a wiki page[0] where I'll start collecting information regarding
the community. If you'd like to join us please put your name on the wiki
page. I hope to have all the infrastructure figured out over the coming
 days.
