Greater Bombay was never officially an area, but the name probably became
popular due to the Municipal Body being called 'Municipal Corporation of
Greater Bombay'.

India has the concepts of Districts as the subdivision of states, and the
Mumbai Region falls under two districts of Mumbai City & Mumbai Suburbs.

The closest corresponding region would probably be the Mumbai Metropolitan
Region (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mumbai_Metropolitan_Region) But it
covers multiple districts, cities and Municipalities.
