Re: [Talk-ca] Forestry Roads
I agree with James and have been tagging forestry roads with highway=track in my area of Ontario. On Wed, Jul 15, 2015 at 10:57 PM, Tristan Anderson andersontris...@hotmail.com wrote: This is how I tag forestry roads: tertiary: major logging roads in remote areas, sometimes also access mines or hydro dams. Well graded, suitable for all vehicles although most traffic is often trucks, usually wide enough for vehicles to pass without slowing down. They're often hundreds of kilometers long with long straight sections, and can connect remote towns or first nation reserves. Still owned by logging companies so should be access=permissive. unclassified: narrower but still drivable with a mid-size front-wheel drive car, may lead to hunting lodges or lakes for boating/fishing/camps... not exclusively forestry traffic but primarily a forestry road. Usually access=permissive. service: mostly for logging activities, accessing current or former clear-cutting sites. Usually access=private, especially if there are no trespassing or authorized vehicles only type signs. Also service would be any road behind a gate that is closed to regular traffic. track: two tire tracks with vegetation growing in the middle, regardless of where it goes or who uses it... can be packed gravel (grade2) right down to ATV/feller buncher tracks (grade5). Grade1 generally refers to paved tracks, the likes of which I have never seen or heard of in Canada. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:highway Should be track Roads for mostly agricultural or forestry uses. To describe the quality of a track, see tracktype=*. Note: Although tracks are often rough with unpaved surfaces, this tag is not describing the quality of a road but its use. Consequently, if you want to tag a general use road, use one of the general highway values instead of track. On Jul 15, 2015 7:15 PM, Steve Roy st...@ssni.ca wrote: Whenever I have created forestry roads I have used highway=track - particularly if I know the road is rough and unmaintained. These are your typical BC forestry roads that are able to be used after logging is completed in the area and the roads haven't been de-activated. I have had people change them to highway=minor/unclassified after my edits are done and for the most part I leave them unless I know the road is a rough/4x4 road, the kind you wouldn't take a Honda Civic on. However I have been emailing with a person adding forestry roads on Vancouver Island and they insist on the tag highway=service for their edits when mapping forestry roads. These aren't the main A to B forestry roads, rather smaller gravel roads. What is the correct tag in Canada? Re: [Talk-ca] ON prefix on Ontario highways
It might make sense to have that info included. Perhaps it could use a separate tag and then renderers can choose how to label it. I am not sure whether this makes sense (looks kind of weird on the default Mapnik renderer) though this convention seems to be used in the US for state highways. I'll second Harald's suggestion to have the map show Canada on load. For now, if you visit openstreetmap.ca, it will look very familiar. Very much like osm.org, in fact. :-) I'm happy with that. It's unsurprising, and easy to maintain. And in the recent; past we haven't done anything else with it, so I think that that this is an improvement. But what else would we like to do? To move forward on any big changes to openstreetmap.ca, I would hope to see a number of things in equal measure: - interesting idea(s) - broad consensus - active participation - resources I don't foresee any deadline for new ideas or implementation, so this can really be a matter for careful consideration over time. We've done pretty well so far, without any grand unification web site. And thanks again, Darryl. Re: [Talk-ca] openstreetmap.ca
I think the most practical and easiest thing to do would be to have a trusted community member control it. I'm sure that we can come up with some measures to ensure that we can contact the domain owner when necessary. Hello Darryl, Thanks for bringing up this resource on the list. If no one else has a better proposal, I'd like to offer the assistance of FACIL (http://facil.qc.ca) in managing this. I welcome any other members of this list to join me in this offer. FACIL is a non-profit based in Quebec province, doing advocacy for free open source software - these days we primarily focus on the government here in Quebec. I am sitting on the board as VP and we have a few competent admin resources, we have been reorganizing some of the hosting and content managament resources succesfully. We recently launched an internal ticket system and have access to free hosting via Koumbit.org. I also have access to other resources as a member of the Free Software Foundation but I believe the OSM project wiki combined with FACIL's guidance should be enough for anyone other contributors here to step in and add the missing glue. If nothing else, having FACIL own the domain and pay for it, and parking it until a formal project takes place would be logical for now. Going a bit further, I would at least redirect it to the OSM Canada wiki page [1], but that is up to you. Pending other discussions on this list, I am leaving that offer on the table. I have no urgency in adding another project to the many things I am involved in, but I can offer those resources now. I suppose some consensus will happen here. Re: [Talk-ca] Importance of Geography
Using sociology students as a benchmark for geographic education is not a really good measure. Nothing against sociology students, but it would be the same as quizzing geography students about sociology. On the other hand, not being able to locate the Atlantic Ocean on a map when you're in Newfoundland raises a few questions. [Talk-ca] Algonquin Provincial Park
I've noticed a lot of problems with the map of Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario so I've created a wiki page to better organize editing efforts in the Area. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Algonquin_Provincial_Park The park is a major tourist attraction in Ontario and a good quality map of the area would be useful to many people. I've suggested some tagging guidelines for hiking trails in the park so we can have a consistent scheme. I also want to create some tagging guidelines for the campgrounds, biking trails, and other important features in the park. The tags I have suggested are based on my personal experience in the area and I welcome any suggestions. [Talk-ca] CanVec Imports in areas with existing data
I've recently imported some CanVec 10 data into the North Bay, Ontario area. It's been hard to figure out the best way to do this because of the assorted versions of existing data in the area. After chatting with some folks in the #osm-ca channel, I left the existing major highways to preserve routing. Since this is the first time I've imported any CanVec data, I am wondering if this is the best way to do it when there is existing data in the area. I would really appreciate it if someone could take a look at my import in case I have broken something.
