Re: [Talk-GB] Idea - OSMUK walkers' map application -- -& server

2020-12-11 Per discussione Seán Lynch
Hi all,

As people enjoy their walk, we would love if you could consider uploading
any plastic / litter data into OpenLitterMap

Right now the only way to add data is using our platform, but we will open
our API hopefully next year and allow uploads from other developers.

github.com/openlittermap

TeamLitterUK is currently in 1st place globally for uploading the most data

Litter mapping has a remarkably low barrier to entry, allowing for
potentially many more people to get involved with data collection and
mapping

Cheers,

Seán

Hi all,

I'm always looking to chat and hear from valuable feedback and opinions. I
am also interested in setting up the "OpenLitterMap Foundation" which would
not be unlike the OSMF.

If you would like to download openlittermap data for a country, state, or
city, simply visit-
openlittermap.com/maps/Ireland/download
openlittermap.com/maps/Australia/NSW/download
openlittermap.com/maps/UK/England/London/download

Notice that in the downloads, the OSM address value is included at the
location of each photo. When a user uploads a photo, the OSM address
information at that location is used to populate the list of locations on
OpenLitterMap dynamically. To incentivize early adoption, this process is
redeemable in Littercoin - a blockchain reward applying "proof of work"
principles to citizen science. I am currently dependent on crowdfunding but
I have applied for several grants. Unfortunately not even the PineappleFund
thinks that my research and open data on plastic pollution is worth
supporting, but maybe you, society, NatGeo or the EU might ? If anyone can
sign up and support, or point out any other potential grants, that would be
extremely appreciated.

I have also launched a slack channel which you are all welcome to join.
Please send me an email and I will send you an invite to the chat.

Happy mapping,

Re: [Talk-GB] Drinking fountains, Ben Fogle, Find-A-Fountain, and Google Maps

2017-07-22 Per discussione Seán Lynch
Hey guys,

I recently asked this on OSM IE chat

You might be interested in http://overpass-turbo.eu/? You may be able to
change the parameters to locate drinking fountains in your ROI

You can also map and log plastic bottle litter and over 120 other kinds of
litter across 9 related-types of waste to campaign for improved services
(eg. drinking fountains) and evaluate those services once implemented on my
website @ openlittermap.com. You might be interested in the spider map
 and weighted hexagonal spatial analysis
 - notice
how you can toggle the layers by related waste. All data from openlittermap
is Free to download. In 1-click you can download all data by Country,
County/State or City- just log in and the option will become available.
Feel welcome to build it up too. Once data reaches successful verification
all maps, charts, etc update automatically. If you can use this data to
stop plastic going into the ocean and educate people, businesses, policy
and institutions or locate hotspots of litter for collection, please do.

Cheers from across the pond,
Seán

Hi Brian & Donal,

Overpass and "Ireland" did work, thanks!

If they can implement these in 18th c Italy we should have no excuse here.
I would like to start campaigning for the introduction of a lot more and
this data is very useful to facilitate that discussion.

I'm also interested in promoting the existing ones use and if I can get the
data, find out if they reduce plastic bottle litter / consumption in the
area, although I doubt it as they don't seem to be well known at least in
my group of friends

Cheers guys,

PS if anyone is in Cork and would like a geo-chat I am running a litter
mapping workshops the odd weekend including next weekend -
https://www.meetup.com/Cork-Litter-mapping-Meetup/ - I will also run some
in Dublin and elsewhere soon too. Would anyone be interested in
participating? Some feedback would be great if anyone can iron out any
issues or bugs. I am also looking for a licence to ensure the data remains
free and open for anyone purpose. Any suggestions?

Best,
Seán

[OSM-talk-ie] Public drinking fountains

2017-07-08 Per discussione Seán Lynch
Hi guys,

I saw a discussion recently, I think in this chat, a map of multiple public
drinking water fountains in Ireland

But I can't seem to find it in my emails or google

I can find individual points eg
http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/278846285#map=14/53.3388/-6.2602

Does anyone know how I can access a map of multiple points of interest?

Cheers,

Seán

Thanks for the kind words and the link

I have not come across that licence, it looks great!

PS. I am also looking for a commercial partner to help develop this further
and I know mapbox do some great work ;-) I was even looking at the job
offers earlier today!

PPS. Feel free to upload some data and get your location on the map :-)

Kindest regards + happy mapping,

Dear all,

Pretty loaded email here -

I am the developer of OpenLitterMap.com - the only citizen science
litter-mapping platform that enables anyone to quantitatively,
categorically and geospatially map litter anywhere on the planet in
hyper-spatial resolution :-) I am also one of the most recent members to
join the OSMF following a talk from Kate at the RGS last year.

Feel free to give the site a whirl and keep contributing if you like it :-)
It works on any device.

All data is free to view by anyone and free to download by any logged in
user. I do not collect data on how you are using the site or who is
downloading data. If you can use this data to stop plastic going into the
ocean, evaluate policy, enforce improved laws, bin catchments, etc - please
do. It is free and very easy to download as a CSV by Country, State or City
level.

In particular, I am looking for advice on my *Terms & Conditions and
Privacy Policy*.

You can read both documents here
openlittermap.com/terms
openlittermap.com/privacy

I am looking for a licence to ensure the data will remain Free and Open,
for any use, without restriction. Including commercial. Currently all data
is licensed and owned by me, following legal advice. However, I must admit
the legal side of things is one of my biggest weaknesses. Geography, yes.
Code, delightful. Legal stuff? *Please help me*!

I also want to ensure that the agreement clearly acknowledges - and I did
my best to ensure that - if someone gets injured while litter mapping, eg
by a needle, that my personal liability is removed. Anyone registering for
the site must take complete personal responsibility for themselves while
looking for or mapping litter. By responsibly mapping litter and not coming
into contact with hazardous items, I believe we can reduce the harms caused
to society at large.

There are also significant ethical questions to be addressed about
revealing drug-related litter. I am in possession of several months of
needle data in Ireland but there is a debate to be had about calling for
improved services vs. potentially increasing the marginalisation of
homeless users. That data is currently offline.

If anyone would like to offer advice, open a discussion or chat with me
privately, please do get in touch I would love to hear some expert thoughts
/ opinion(s)!

Cheers,

Seán

[OSM-talk-ie] Gutters

2017-05-18 Per discussione Seán Lynch
Hi all,

I am in the process of crowdsourcing geospatial data that may be of
interest to the OSM community

In particular, I am interested to know where are the pathways where litter
begins its journey to the ocean (eg gutters, storm drains etc).

If you are interested, following todays update, you can now log and collect
information on

- individual gutters
- long gutters
- small kerb holes and
- larger kerb holes

eg

https://www.instagram.com/p/BToLhAHjYI_/

https://www.instagram.com/p/BTfC9-BjQxJ/

https://openlittermap.com/assets/cigbutts.jpg

via OpenLitterMap.com which will be verified and made available to download
anywhere in the world

Feel free to add this in and consume the data via geotagged images which is
free to download by anyone

Kind regards,

Seán

Re: [Talk-GB] Open Litter Map now online

2017-04-25 Per discussione Seán Lynch
Hi Dave & David,

Thanks for the feedback- appreciate it.

OpenLitterMap.com enables Citizen Scientists to tell a story and like the
millions of tonnes of plastic choking our oceans, it is meant to be
provocative (hence a few animations). I think one of the websites strengths
is its ability to communicate the problems of littering and be used in an
educational setting for collecting data and communicating that data. The
nav bar is fixed at the top which clearly says "Maps & Data" which guides
the user to click on a country name for a list of areas that have maps
within each country. Each sub-country location can be loaded on a map,
which also has a time slider and dynamically-sized weighted hex. grid for
spatial analysis. It might take a minute to navigate but I don't think it's
particularly difficult? All instructions are listed on each respective
page. I will follow up with some improved tutorials soon.

If you are unable to contribute as little as 30p a day to finance the
continued development of OpenLitterMap.com, there is a free account, which
will increase in upload allowance as you play the game. I think the first 2
increases are at level 5 and 10 and I will leave you explore if you want to
find out how it will increase over time. Basically the more people that are
happy to contribute, the greater the upload allowance will be for everyone.
At the moment I need to be conservative as I am financing this
independently, but I hope there are a community of mappers out there who
would like to see this project developed further. Any additional feedback
is welcome and I will take OSM considerations seriously.

Once the data grows a bit, researchers and councils can download it at ease
which I hope can improve our modes of understanding and intervention. The
goal here is to find new ways to stop plastic reaching the ocean by
enabling civic participation and creating open data.

If you would like to give it a whirl and report back, please do

Kind regards,

Seán

[Talk-GB] Open Litter Map now online

2017-04-24 Per discussione Seán Lynch
Dear all,

Greetings from Ireland!

I am one of the most recent members to join the OSM Foundation and I
thought you would be interested to know that my website
www.openlittermap.com is now online. I am undergoing the slow process of
trying to improve reverse-geocoded addresses and collect more data on
street furniture to feed back into OSM. I am particularly interested in
bins and gutters, and their relationships to littering-trends. If you are
interested in examining these spatial patterns yourself, I hope OLM can
empower you to do so. All data is free to view + download by anyone at a
single click. My motivation here is simple- we need to see an immediate
reduction in the amount of plastic waste into the oceans of our only
habitable planet and geospatial information crowdsourcing ("Citizen
Science") is probably the most cost-effective and realistic way of
achieving that. If you would like to organize your own litter mapping
workshops and contribute to Open Litter Map and meet similarly minded
people in your community, please do and consider making an effort to
contribute meaningful data to openlittermap.com

As I said, all data that passes OLM verification (Stage 1 & 2) is available
to view + download for free as CSV per country and sub-country region at a
single click. I will add in a global section soon once the data increases a
bit. Feel free to add your location in by submitting valid data and
everything else will dynamically populate itself follow successful image
verification.

You may filter data temporally and change the size of the
weighted-hexagonal grid for spatial analysis with a slider, or directly
through the URL.

Here is a video tutorial
about how to contribute data to Open Litter Map. If anyone would like to
help me make a better one, let me know

Currently there is no mobile app but it works well in the browser on all
platforms, particularly on non-mobile.

You can see that non-paying members can upload 1 image every day. This
allowance increases as you play open litter map by generating experience
points which can be gained from uploading images, tagging litter, verifying
images + having your images verified. Once I get a better handle on the
costs involved, I would like to increase this upload allowance but for now
I need to keep the costs as low as possible.

However, it is very unlikely that I will be able to finance this by myself,
long term. If you would like to see this initiative continue and develop,
for as little as ~30p a day you can finance the development of Open Litter
Map which will significantly increase your upload limit and help me cover
and recuperate the costs. By default when you upload images you are made
anonymous but if you choose to go public (/settings/privacy) you can
compete in multiple leaderboards.

Would appreciate some feedback. I hope you like it!

PS. Nowhere in the UK has been added yet, who will claim the honour of
doing so??

Happy mapping!

Seán

Dear all,

Here is a 15-min tutorial on how to become an expert litter-mapping Citizen
Scientist on the OpenLitterMap platform

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E0c5TIYzNI

If you would like to keep up to date, there are accounts on fb/tw/ig that
you can follow @OpenLitterMap

All data is free to view + download by anyone. If you can figure out how to
stop plastic reaching the ocean, please do.

I hope to see new countries + locations added to the list soon, which will
automatically populate upon successful image verification.

Happy mapping :-)

[OSM-talk-ie] Is mise Seán

2016-11-13 Per discussione Seán Lynch
Hi all,

This is my first time posting here. I am probably the most recent person to
join the OSM Foundation as a normal member after meeting Kate Chapman at a
COST event last month and I would like to get more involved.

I am currently engaged in the slow process of trying to standardize a
database of reverse-geocoded requests from a 3rd party provider. I am not
sure how recent their data is but as I update and reorganize the values if
I have anything to offer I would be happy to contribute.

Could someone bring me up to speed please:

- What is the general standard of quality of addresses in Irish cities? Are
many areas of city centers blanked out or lacking in quality? What areas
need and are currently receiving attention?

- Secondly, has the community agreed upon a standardized address format for
Ireland? Is 'county' = 'Cork' or 'Co. Cork' ? ... etc. There seems to be a
lot of common errors which annoying to have to debug and correct. Is there
something being done about this?

- Thirdly, is anyone providing data at the sub-national level for Ireland?
I only discovered http://planet.openstreetmap.ie/ and this is a great
resource- thanks to whoever got this together. May I suggest providing some
trial shp data and an example of where data is lacking or could be improved?

- Finally, I have a more technical question- I am trying to devise a
strategy to capture the results from reverse geocoded requests and
correctly store them in their respective db columns. The count of the
address array and the keys (php) are dynamic. Is there a set of keys for
addresses that someone can recommend? Eg. there is commonly 1 value either
for "suburb" or sometimes the key is "locality" and other times it is
"city_district" and there are probably more keys I need too. Can someone
recommend a strategy? Alternatively I am considering counting the array and
hard coding the values in by index.. thoughts??

Thanks for reading,

Kind regards-
Seán
