Re: [Talk-us] Updating unchanged TIGER imports to TIGER 2013

2013-03-16 Thread Michael Patrick
The other thing that has come up is that there are a lot of TIGER edges that
do not correspond to OSM ways in either their old or new version In Indiana
most of these seem to be linear water. Were these intentionally excluded
from OSM? Or would it be useful to try to pick them up as part of the set
of changes representing additions to TIGER between 2006 and 2013?

5.10 Hydrography
Hydrography features and attributes are available by county in the
following shapefiles:

Area Hydrography County-based Shapefile
Linear Hydrography County-based Shapefile

The Area Hydrography Shapefile contains the geometry and attributes of both
perennial and intermittent area hydrography features, including ponds,
lakes, oceans, swamps, glaciers, and the area covered by large streams
represented as double-line drainage. Single-line drainage water features
can be found in the All Lines Shapefile and Linear Hydrography Shapefile.

The Linear Hydrography shapefile contains all linear hydrography features
with “H” (Hydrography) type MTFCC in the MAF/TIGER database by county. The
shapefiles are provided at a county geographic extent and in linear
elemental feature geometry. The content of the linear hydrography shapefile
includes streams/rivers, braided streams, canals, ditches, artificial paths
and aqueducts. A linear hydrography feature may include edges with both
perennial and intermittent persistence.

5-40
The artificial path features may correspond to those in the USGS National
Hydrographic Dataset (NHD). However, in many cases the features do not
match NHD equivalent feature and will not carry the NHD metadata codes.

Single-line drainage water features include artificial path features that
run through double-line drainage features such as rivers and streams, and
serve as a linear representation of these features. Shorelines for area
hydrography can be found in the All Lines shapefiles with MTFCC set to
either “P0002” (shoreline of perennial water feature) or “P0003” (shoreline
of intermittent water feature).

I believe TIGER water features were excluded because NHD data is more accurate
and comprehensive in most locations.

Somewhere else in the processing steps documentation, they mention that
they simplify and adjust either, or both, to eliminate braiding, etc., (
like where a winding road follows a oxbowed river) - and that adjustment is
tempered if either or both according to the significance as statistical
area boundary between census periods.

I'm surprised by how bad the NHD data is. I downloaded some of it in
.OSM format, and my casual hand digitization off Bing maps is much
better. If I say so myself, which I do.

That's not surprising if they last updated the NHD data between 1990
and 2005 on the average (although they are continuously updating parts
of it). NHD was much better than I could get from the Yahoo imagery.
Many places where I've been, I cannot get an accurate water feature
location from Bing alone, but a survey + Bing imagery is required to get
better than NHD.

Results will vary based on land contours, tree cover, and the NHD
survey methods.

[Talk-us] Whole-US Garmin Map update - 2013-03-15

2013-03-16 Thread Dave Hansen
These are based off of Lambertus's work here:

http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl

If you have questions or comments about these maps, please feel
free to ask. However, please do not send me private mail. The
odds are, someone else will have the same questions, and by
asking on the talk-us@ list, others can benefit.

FAQ

Why did you do this?

I wrote scripts to joined them myself to lessen the impact
of doing a large join on Lambertus's server. I've also
cut them in large longitude swaths that should fit conveniently
on removable media.

http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/2013-03-15

Can or should I seed the torrents?

Yes!! If you use the .torrent files, please seed. That web
server is in the UK, and it helps to have some peers on this
side of the Atlantic.

Why is my map missing small rectangular areas?

There have been some missing tiles from Lambertus's map (the
red rectangles), I don't see any at the moment, so you may
want to update if you had issues with the last set.

Why can I not copy the large files to my new SD card?

If you buy a new card (especially SDHC), some are FAT16 from
the factory. I had to reformat it to let me create a 2GB
file.

Does your map cover Mexico/Canada?

Yes!! I have, for the purposes of this map, annexed Ontario
in to the USA. Some areas of North America that are close
to the US also just happen to get pulled in to these maps.
This might not happen forever, and if you would like your
non-US area to get included, let me know.

Eric,

I'm in general favor of your idea. I think that if we can get more
accurate, up to date data out of TIGER, then we should.

I'd strongly encourage you to join us on the OSM US Import Committee list:

i'm interested in this too. i may have a need in the near future to work
with
Schoharie County, NY which is relatively untouched and has some of the
iffier tiger 2005 stuff in NY. updating it to more current tiger would
be a big
step on the way to where it needs to go.

i strongly support Serge's suggestion that you get on the import committee
list. there are a bunch of smart, experienced mappers there who can provide
excellent input.
