I've had to clean up his edits before. What bothers me is that he's
unresponsive and never leaves any comments on his edits. I've brought him
up before to DWG but nothing's been done.

Retry, being unresponsive while performing disputed edits is a good reason
to be (temporarily) blocked.

Re: [Talk-us] Take another look at notes!

2013-06-01 Thread Greg Troxel

Thanks for pointing out the craigslist/notes connection.

A minor UI comment: I added a note about something that I know needs
fixing, just to see what it was like. I didn't realize that one had to
move the marker before clicking 'add', and the text box started out over
the area where the marker belonged.

So it would be nice if step one was click to place, and only then could
one type. I think it would result in more accurate placement.

An alternative would be to let users that added a note move them.

(I realize this has nothing to do with externally-generated notes.)

I've tried a couple times to reach out to this user with no response. I've
had to delete several huge swaths of highway=proposed roads in the Chicago
area that they've added. They also added a ton of barrier=ditch lines in
seemingly random spots.

Can we stop rendering highway=proposed?

This seems like a problem to me. Perhaps we (that is to say, the
people who have the permission to stop an account from uploading) need
an intermediate step between locking an account, and permitting random
editing. Maybe we need a status intermediate between having an account
locked, and having an account which is marked read-only? Your account
is marked as read-only. Please read your INBOX for more
information. That would catch the id and potlatch users. Then we just
need JOSM to show a similar error message when it tries to log you in.

Or maybe a 'moderation' facility, whereby somebody's changeset needs
to be human-reviewed before it goes into the database? If somebody has
proven themselves to make troublesome edits, this seems like an
expensive yet effective way to help them.

This is what an account block is and it already happens. When a user is
blocked they must acknowledge and read a message before they can continue
editing.

nice to have the note say the source, i.e. craigslist, osm, routing

Well as I said all craigslist notes will start with the words bounds and
a coordinate pair. But yes the thought had occurred to me that a created_by
tag like we have on changesets might actually be useful for notes,
especially when being created by 3rd party sites like craigslist. I brought
the idea up in #osm-dev and it didn't seem to get a good reception but I
may try again now that someone is actually using the feature externally.

It's probably worth pointing out that the tiles Craigslist is using are
pretty out of date. For example, they don't show the buildings in Chicago
that were imported a couple of months ago. Hopefully Craigslist users won't
get too frustrated when the problems they point out don't appear to be
fixed immediately.

Hi,

Since we are talking about the new notes feature. I think it is great,
how about showing the notes by default on main OSM page?

Thanks

You may need to clear our your local cache to get the new towns.
