Re: [Talk-us] [OSM-talk] OSM User Testing

2010-10-01 Thread Thea Clay
Hi Ya'll,
There is a mapping party in North Carolina this weekend. We'll have plenty of
first time users that will likely be willing to have their experience
documented. I am bringing my video camera and will record their experience (if
they agree) since I probably won't make the SF event.

Re: [Talk-us] Community Involvement

2010-07-22 Thread Thea Clay
I totally agree with the idea of a group working together on improving how-to
documents and the beginners guide. I would love to help since I volunteered to
work on this project at SOTM in Girona.

I have been working on a few general guides and tutorials for new mappers, how
to's for hosting events and video tutorials for editing with Mapzen. Most of
the documents are specific to outreach projects I've been working but they
could very easily be made more universal. --- And of course getting easy to
understand tutorials for the two most popular editors (JOSM and Potlatch) are
probably the most important tools for a newbie. Mine are pitiful so say the
least.

After spending a week or so combing through the wiki and other help docs I
think there are quite a few very useful how to's already out there, they are
just dispersed and could use revision. I would hate to throw the baby out with
the bathwater. Maybe a good first step would be to gather all the material that
has been created and fill in the gaps from there. I went ahead a created a wiki
page so people who have documents already created can contribute them to the
process and where the group can work on putting the new stuff together. Here is
the link: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Draft_Documentation_and_Guides.

I personally feel that the group working on this should be as open as possible
and that the document should not be 'locked'. Things change so quickly in OSM
that I would hate to have outdated resources or put up barriers to people who
want to contribute in this fashion. But that's just my opinion. I also have no
attachment to using the wiki as our home base, it just seemed like the most
inclusive and easiest way to proceed at this point.

It might also be nice to get some mappers from non-English speaking communities
involved. I am sure there is great stuff out there written in German, French,
et al.

Best,
Thea

Re: [Talk-us] US meetups?

2010-04-30 Thread Thea Clay
Hi,
Here are some more OSM related sites I'm connected with. CloudMade repays me
for the meetup.com fees.
Austin, TX: http://www.meetup.com/Austin-OpenStreetMappers/ and
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=358884127712
Dallas, TX: http://www.meetup.com/Dallas-OpenStreetMappers/
San Antonio, TX: http://www.meetup.com/San-Antonio-OpenStreetMappers/
Alabama: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=220585289228
Georgia: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=135720612308

I agree that the cost of Meetup.com is a burden to organizers. The reason I
have continued to use it is because frankly its hard to organize events and
provide a palatable social networking platform for group members to easily stay
in touch between events/work on long term projects using only the wiki and
talk-us.

Some of the Meetup groups I organize have switched over to Facebook because a
majority of the mappers are already using the service, its super easy to do and
free. I personally really like the concept of the MappingDC page
(www.mappingdc.org) but I think in general setting up and running a standalone
site for each local group is both a burden to organizers and not scalable.

My base level concern with all of these sites is that they are not really
connected with OSM proper or each other. Having local OSM groups on so many
sites is fine in theory and I don't want to micromanage by advocating people
must use X site. I think communities should be free to self-organize any
way they want. But logistically it becomes very hard to get groups talking with
each other or the larger OSM community when they are scattered. Communication
between groups early on is important because often new/potenial organizers are
unaware of all the resources and experience found in the existing community. I
get the sense that groups are forming on these outside sites mainly out of
necessity rather than inherent preference of one over the other. As interest in
organizing city level groups for more coordinated mapping grows I think OSM-US
could possibly provide this essential service to community members in a free
and OSM-centric environment.

Personally I agree with Ian's idea. I would love to see an OSM-US site like the
one in Germany ( http://www.openstreetmap.de/) that would have city level pages
similar to MappingDC. If I remember correctly we have donated servers re Ian
and SteveC has the domain openstreetmap.us (
http://www.mail-archive.com/talk-us@openstreetmap.org/msg02623.html). That way
we can serve the needs of current members but also have an engaging centralized
place were newbies can go to find resources, connect with other mappers in
their area or, if there are no other mappers nearby, start the local community
themselves.

I think all we are missing are people to help design and populate the site. Is
anyone interested in teaming up to get this done?

2010-02-23 Thread Thea Clay
Hi Everyone,
I posted the latest draft (v0.3) of the OSMF Local Chapter Agreement to the US
Chapter wiki page so we can better track changes and incorporate suggestions
made by US community members. It appears that many of the suggestions made on
the Local Chapters mailing list and conference calls were not included in v0.3
so this is a great opportunity to reiterate your vision for OSM-US. I want to
encourage everyone to take a look at it, add comments, make suggestions for
alternate wording and/or add sections you feel should be included.

Note: This version of the Chapter Agreement is intended to be written from the
perspective of the US community. These suggestions will then be submitted to
the OSMF Local Chapter Working Group for possible incorporation into the master
draft they maintain. The original document can be found at:
http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0ASP0Iaqh9aCnZGZwZGhteGtfMjBnMjNkazR6ZA&hl=en_GB&invite=CLnpweIH

If you would like to be involved in the process of creating the US Local
Chapter, please join us on our weekly calls. The call in details are listed

Hi

One of the things we found at the OSMF is that you really need to be open about
any potential conflicts of interest, like where you work or if you hold shares
in TeleAtlas... that kind of thing. Anything a reasonable outsider could
conclude is a potential conflict.

I think that for your own good so it's not a surprise to people, all those
running for the board of OSMF-US should be upfront about it. I don't think
there's any shame in it, but I can tell you from experience that people get
very upset if you're not clear about everything from day 1.

Yours &c.

Hey All,

I'm usually pretty up front about the fact that I work for FortiusOne.
It was an oversight with announcing my acceptance that I didn't

FortiusOne uses OSM tiles on our public site http://www.geocommons.com

the space is free and available.

Re: [Talk-us] US Chapter temporary Board Nomination

2010-02-11 Thread Thea Clay
Hi,
I'll officially throw my hat in as well. I accept the nomination to run for the
temporary board of the U.S. Chapter of OSM.

I have been active in OpenStreetMap for about a year. A majority of my work has
been focused on planning mapping events, building community partnerships and
encouraging OSM contributions/use by organizations throughout the US. This
includes (among other things) organizing and running the Atlanta Mapathon last
October, the Austin, Texas Mapathon (coming in Spring 2010), developing a
mapping program for 4-H's Science, Engineering, and Technology Project,
developing a mapping program for the Georgia Public Library System that
includes librarian training and GPS checkout, and of course mapping my
neighborhood and hometown. I am also a regular participant in the conference
calls for both the OSM US Local Chapter Working Group and the US SOTM Planning
Committee.

Outside of OSM, I have experience managing the creation and incorporation of
non-governmental organizations, writing (successful) non-profit funding and
grant proposals and acting as an organizational liaison to public and private
partners. If elected to the temporary board there are three primary areas where
I feel my skills could benefit the US Chapter:
1.) Building an open, responsive and efficient organizational structure that
can guide the chapter through the process of incorporation, full-term board
elections and first national conference.
2.) Working in conjunction with the OSMF to establish a mutually beneficial
Chapter Agreement that both preserves the goals, bylaws and core values of OSM
and respects the 'spirit of the laws' of each locality.
3.) Creating a sustainable funding strategy for the US OSM Chapter/securing
initial donations to support the organization through incorporation and the
first year of operation.

Thank you for your consideration.

Best,
Thea Clay

[Talk-us] Correct location of OSMF SOTM 2010

Re: [Talk-us] Vegetation/landuse import

Ian,
I totally agree that the import I referenced is not perfect. I really just
wanted to show a place that had already completed an import for reference. The
points you bring up are very relevant and you were not belittling the effort in
the least :) If nothing else we have an example to improve upon. That
particular import was done some time ago and a lot has changed on the ground
and the dataset is low resolution.

Do you have any recommendations for how we might fix it?

Thea

Although the lower-detail zooms might look marginally better (I would say
they're way too cluttered right now...), the import was not done very well for
two main reasons:

1. All of the areas were imported with overlapping edges. This means there is
*tons* of duplicate information in the database. I learned my lesson with the
counties import: overlapping edge imports like this should be broken apart and
use relations for the borders.

2. The resolution of the landuse information is very low. If you zoom in and
use Potlatch to see what the aerial images look like, you can see that in most
cases the polygons don't come close to matching the actual landuse. in the
future, we should make sure that imports are high-enough resolution to be
useful in our datasets. 1:24k is the minimum and even that is not useful in
some cases.

I'm not trying to belittle the effort, I just want to make sure we don't repeat
the same mistakes on other huge imports like this.

[Talk-us] Super Wal-Mart Tag

2009-11-12 Thread Thea Clay
Hi,
I have a random question... does anyone have suggestions for how I would
correctly tag a Super Wal-Mart? I read through the wiki but there didn't appear
to be a tag that fit.

The store in question has a 1.) a full grocery store with
bakery/deli/produce/dry goods, 2.) a full service hair and nail salon, 3.)
clothes and typical random household items, 4.) a pharmacy, 5.) a full service
car lube and tire shop, 6.) an opthamologist and RX glasses shop, 7.) a garden
center/nursery, 8.) a gas station and 9.) a Subway sandwich shop. All of these
sub-stores are located within the same building and are part of Wal-Mart, not
multiple stores located in a strip mall. Scary right :) Is this tagged as one
store (which it is in reality) or multiple specialty shops?

To complicate matters, there is a difference between a Super Wal-Mart and
regular Wal-Mart/Target/Big Box Store. And Super Wal-Marts all seem to have
slightly different variations on the types of shops they have in each store.

16th at 6:00 PM. More information can be found here:
http://www.meetup.com/atliphonedev/.

This event will be geared more towards developers and people looking to
incorporate OSM into their apps etc. The mapping days are Saturday and Sunday
but I encourage everyone in the area to come on Friday as well. If hearing how
OSM will be used in the next cool new apps isn't motivation enough, there will
be pizza and beer on Friday.

I hope to see you all there!

[Talk-us] Event Reminder: Atlanta, Georgia Mapathon

2009-09-30 Thread Thea Clay
Hi Everyone!

I wanted to send out a reminder to all the mappers around the Atlanta, Georgia
area (and all the folks coming in from out of town) that the Atlanta Mapathon
on October 16-18 is quickly approaching. Check out the wiki for all of the
event details and locations.
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Atlanta_Citywide_Mapathon

The Mapathon Headquarters will be located on the 3rd floor of Central Library
in the heart of historic downtown Atlanta. Central Library is going to be the
best place to come if you are interested in mapping the historic sites, tourist
attractions, shopping/restaurant districts and city parks that Downtown Atlanta
is known for. The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System has also generously
provided space for us to meet in 10 other branches around Atlanta so community
groups and neighborhood associations can map their communities. There will be
plenty of work space and FREE WIFI at all the locations so bring your laptop!
The Mapathon locations will be open from 12:00 - 5:00 PM on Saturday, 10/17 and
2:00 - 6:00 PM on Sunday, 10/18.

This event is going to be a lot of fun. There is a ton of excitement about OSM
and the Mapathon within the Atlanta area. We're expecting a great crowd made up
of OSM members, non-profit groups, university clubs and local business
associations, plus lots of newbies and people who are curious about the
project. I hope to see many of you there as well!

[Talk-us] Reminder: Atlanta Mapping Party September 12-13

2009-09-08 Thread Thea Clay
Hello fellow mappers!
I wanted to send everyone a reminder that the Atlanta, Georgia OSM community is
having a mapping party this Saturday and Sunday. We will be mapping the area in
and around Centennial Olympic Park on Saturday and Grant Park and Zoo Atlanta
on Sunday. The event is shaping up to be fairly large and if our other mapping
parties are any indication, we are going to have a lot of fun. Check out the
wiki for all of the event details and to learn more about the projects we are
working on in Georgia: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Atlanta

This event is the first in a series of mapping parties happening in Georgia
throughout the remainder of the year. The mapping party this weekend is an
introduction to OSM for a lot of community groups and municipal GIS departments
who are helping the local mapping community make the map of Atlanta as good as
some of the other major North American and Canadian cities. I want to encourage
all the OSM mappers around the Atlanta area to attend because we have a ton of
newbies coming and it would be great to have just as many experienced mappers
there as well to show them the ropes.

We are also hosting a huge citywide Mapathon on October 16-18, 2009 to bring as
many community groups and new mappers as possible together with the already
awesome local OSM community to ramp up contributions to the Atlanta map and
expand the base of mappers. These upcoming mapping events are very exciting for
the mappers who have been working on the map of Georgia for quite some time
now. Especially since our efforts are now being noticed by business
associations, universities and established non-profit organizations who want to
help us reach our goal of making the Atlanta map one of the best in the country.

I hope to see many of you there!
