[Talk-us] Mappy Hour / Many Mappy Minutes
Hi all, We had our first virtual mappy hour tonight and it was a lot of fun to chat with fellow mappers. I wrote a short diary post about it, also announcing the next edition on November 1: https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/mvexel/diary/42393 Martijn ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
[Talk-us] Mappy Hour!
Hi all, Announcing the bi-weekly OSM US Mappy Hour for tomorrow! The Mappy hour happens on Google Hangouts at this link: http://bit.ly/osm-mappy-hour starting at 5:30pm Pacific / 8:30pm Eastern. Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it tomorrow myself, nor did I have time to line up a presenter / demo. If someone wants to share their OSM related project, mapping endeavors, surveying techniques or anything else OSM related, just do it! Happy mapping -- Martijn van Exel skype: mvexel ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

[Talk-us] Mappy Hour - Next Monday
Heya. Trying to keep my word, announcing next week's Mappy Hour SIX days in advance. And you asked for a theme or presentation each time - you're going to get it. Next week, Richard Welty will talk about OpenHistoricalMap. Read about it here: http://www.openhistoricalmap.org/about but better still, come join the Mappy Hour next week. I have a few more topics lined up, but if you have something you'd like to present - a mapping project, surveying experiences, local news from across the country, interesting collaborations, whatever really! we all want to hear about it. Just let me know. So tl;dr next Monday, 5:30pm PT, 8:30pm ET, Mappy Hour, on Google Hangouts, go to http://bit.ly/osm-mappy-hour (new - direct hangout link, hope this works!) On Mon, Jul 1, 2013 at 9:39 PM, stevea stevea...@softworkers.com wrot It's that Monday again! I know this has been raised as an issue here before, but are we any closer to answering: Is there an online (audio/video) venue which has less onerous Terms of Service than Google's? A way to technologically solve a delightfully impromptu meeting like this without using a corporate host that insists upon taking from us everything we discuss within its digital domain? We discussed this yesterday in the context of the US Import Committee, which has filled up and not everyone was even able to join and participate. The short answer is no. The longer answer is that other services do exist, but they have limitations which do not allow them to fit the bill. These limitations include: 1. Presenter oriented There are a number of tools which are designed to be presenter oriented, such as Big Blue Button. These tools are very powerful (and may be useful for OSM in other contexts), but do not fit the more casual model, where anyone is able to speak and participate fully. 2. They are audio only We could do audio only conferences pretty easily, and we could just use a phone conferencing service (rather than a web service), but there's a lot missing in a phone conference- from social cues, to being able to share and discuss at the same time. This is useful for the US Import Committee when we are going over a dataset and want to highlight some specific feature, or demonstrate a tool. 3. They don't work with enough simultaneous participants The newest tool in this arena is the WebRTC standard, which is in both Chrome and Firefox. It can do real time communication with video, but it's unfortunately not yet able to handle more than two participants. It's planned, but it's not there yet. That leaves just a few remaining options. I think Skype can handle 10 participants in a video call, but the problem with Skype is that my understanding that you have to have a special kind of account for group video calls, and that participants must specifically be invited to participate. Google Hangout isn't ideal, for sure, but I think for now, it's the only option that solves a majority of our needs. - Serge ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

Steve, I understand your concern, believe me, I do. I too want public OSM events to be as inclusive as possible. We were actually just talking about alternatives during the mappy hour (for different reasons) and the conclusion for now was that there is not a mature alternative available yet that would allow us to communicate in a similar fashion. In the mean time, if you happen upon a promising candidate, please feel free to make a suggestion at any time. Re: [Talk-us] Mappy Hour
Who is available to initiate and moderate this tonight? All it takes is 1) start a hangout 2) post link on google+ event and 3) be there for the duration. [Talk-us] Mappy Hour HOWTO
1) Book a time and place. 2) Promote the event. 3) Attend. 4) Have fun. That's really it. Everything else is just a matter of balancing your compromises. Pick a location and time that suits you and suits the audience you wish to attract. If you want the high-school crowd, don't pick a venue they can't attend like a bar. Promote, at a minimum, on the OSM wiki calendar, talk-us@, the usergroups map[1] and whatever social networks you like. Depending on mapper-density, that might not be enough. Also consider, local linux user groups, local cycling clubs, local Audubon, business improvement districts, etc. You don't have to tell them every time you meet, but let them know once in a while. Also on promotion, you don't have to use meetup.com. At least one group is using groupspaces.com But use something to keep track of previous attendees, to keep a public calendar, to get in touch with the other attendees, etc. Ideally, you want a place people can find you and your next event, even by accident. Attend. If you set a date, make sure you show up. ;-) Have fun. And help newbies have fun. Get the new attendees to talk. Make sure they can ask questions. Answer if you can, I don't know is a valid answer. Or help them through the wiki / mailing lists if you can't, I don't know, let's find out is a valid answer as well. If you have wifi available and an editing question arises, get them online, and coach them while they edit. Let them drive the computer. Don't grab the keyboard / mouse. ;-) There are many refinements you can make, but none of this can happen until you decide to do it and pick a time and place. But mostly, you just have to decide to do it. [1] http://usergroups.openstreetmap.de/ Get listed by adding your group to the osm wiki and use the groups template. Follow Seattle for an example. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Seattle,_Washington#Local_OSM_Group ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
