I spot checked several 'airports' on this list I am familiar with, and then
stopped. Aside from the very major ones, there are serious inaccuracies.
Some of this data is obviously scraped from other sources without
verifying.

Keep in mind that it's perfectly acceptable to set up a private

I grew up in Montana, and through high school flew as an observer on many
search and rescue practice missions, some in this area. Even the presence
of these features does not mean this is a viable aviation facility on an
ongoing basis.

Safe ingress and egress can change on a day by day, or even hour by hour
basis, some places even require 'boots on the ground' to walk the field to
ensure conditions, or have obstructions or wind conditions that require
*very* local knowledge. There are many places that have airfield like
characteristics that go back as far as the early biplane airmail routes,
and the US Army also built quite a few emergency fields during WW II.
Recently, because of major wild fire fighting activities, some of these
have been very temporarily recommissioned, than abandoned.

My recommendation is if you are going to label something as an sort of
aviation facility, use the FAA data at
http://www.faa.gov/airports/airport_safety/airportdata_5010/ .

If it's associated with some facility like a ranch, you can add an amenity
tag or some such, with an appropriate contact number.

Otherwise, that 'airfield' is still just a 'field', and no different than
the fact that just about any sizable lake is a seaplane runway. At the
local fairgrounds, farm pastures are pressed into service during the fair
as visitor parking, just because there are cars, pay booths, markers once a
year doesn't make it a parking lot - it's just a field.

Ian is right that not all private airports are recognized by the FAA.
The two examples you gave appear to be examples of that.

The second example *is* shown on FAA's VFR Sectional Chart (that pilots
use to navigate in visual conditions) as an "unverified" airport
(circled U) but with no additional info:

https://skyvector.com/?ll=45.524630359,-109.5904083=301=3

As far as I know, FAA's "Airport/Facility Directory" is the official
list of airports in the United States, and it has a lot of useful
information. Of course, that doesn't help in this case since these
airports are not in it.

Montana, like many western state, need help in rural areas. I have been
wondering about an outreach program with local ag extensions, or Future
Farmers of America, 4H, Boy Scouts, etc. I attended a small county fair
last year. The local Future Farmers did a demo of remote subs they using to
map ocean floors. It was part of a NASA (I think) program to get kids
interested in science.

I will contact them as soon as I'm done with cleaning up TIGER geometries
in the area, because I have a few more questions (e.g. roads that look

Well, the user would be myself in this case, and I added these things
as runways because that is what they look like.

Great, so there are at least a few people in the project familiar
with Montana. I've been there only a few times as a tourist, and I
have been working on cleaning up TIGER geometries for Montana
basically because (almost) no-one else did. My hope is that we

The first example you provided is located in Stillwater County, Montana.
Stillwater has gis data available, but unfortunately for me requires
Microsoft Silverlight browser plugin which I am not able to run. I would
check the county gis database for more information. The website is
http://www.stillwater.mt.gov/GIS/default.asp

There is even someone you could contact. I find most county gis departments
usually more than willing to help, especially if you ask nice. Even in
counties without free data, they might be able to provide you with the name
of the runway.

Have you contacted the user? While it looks like a runway, I'm not certain
that it is. Although, not sure what else it could be.

FWIW - I used to live in Montana and am familiar with parts of the state.
