The Bat! 4.0.0.1 ALPHA

The Bat! 4.0.0.1 ALPHA is available at
http://www.ritlabs.com/download/files3/the_bat/beta/tba4001.rar

[-] 0006520: Installation did not create associated pics for the 2 icons
[-] The window to select a new name attribute in S/MIME (X.509) generation
dialog was not centered on the screen; it was placed in the top left corner of
the screen instead;
[-] The window to select attributes when creating a certificate request
(PKCS#10) had bad design; editing of the attributes was not logical.
[+] The AutoCheck and CheckOnActivate parameters of the /ADD command line
option did only support true and false arguments. Now they also support the
following aliases for true: 1, on, yes, checked; for false: -1, 0, off, no.
[-] The attachment panel could become invisible in the message editor; if you
attach a file, there were an impression that it was not attached at all, until
you save the message to outbox. In the outbox, the attached files became
visible to the user.
[-] The Bat! didn't display the contents of the Certificate Policies extension
[-] Authority Key Identifier certificate extension was not displayed in the
list of certificate properties.
[-] The contents of the CRL Distribution Points certificate extension was not
displayed in the list of certificate properties.
[-] Zahid didn't compile
[-] The option When a password-protected account is being checked... in the
account properties was available even in modes which didn't have an account
password, e.g. The Bat! Professional with On-The-Fly encryption.
[*] The button Lists in the Submission Forms entry of The Bat! Preferences
(Options|Preferences) is only available when The Bat! is started with
/EDIT_SUBMISSION_FORMS command line option.
[-] Private Key Usage Period was not displayed correctly in the certificate
properties window.
[*] The Bat! now gives a statement regarding limits on the value of
transactions, if such an attribute presents in a qualified certificate.
[*] The Bat! can now display Registration Authorities in the Qualified
Certificate Statements extension, as discussed in Section 3.2.6.1 of rfc3739.
[*] The Bat! now displays unknown key purposes in the Extended Key Usage
certificate extension.
[-] When the Edit Address Entry window was modal, it had a separate entry in
the task bar that caused problems selecting the first (main The Bat!) entry in
the task bar. This selection was not possible, The Bat! was blocked by the
Edit Address Entry window.
[-] Some certificate properties weren't localized
[*] When a certificate had an extension that The Bat! could not recognize, and
this extension was marked as critical, The Bat! it didn't load such a
certificate. Now The Bat! load such certificates and allows viewing them,
marking them invalid though. On such certificates, The Bat! displays This
certificate has a critical extension that is not recognized
[*] The Bat! now understands the role name attribute in X.509 certificates
(see RFC-3281)
[-] (#0006532) S/MIME decryption has caused access violations in 3.99.29
[-] If a certificate had expiration date after, 2038, it has not been displayed
when viewing the properties of the certificate.
[-] When adding e-mail addresses from the address book to the outgoing message
using Pick e-mail addresses dialog, and the addressee name did contain the
quotation mark characters, these character were preceded by back-slashes. Now
the quotation mark and other non-RFC characters are removed from the
addressee names.
[-] The opportunity to cure infected messages using anti-virus plugins didn't
work
[*] When a message is signed or encrypted by S/MIME or PGP or has a PGP key
attached, a security button appears in the left top corner of the message text
header. This button has a pop-up menu that explicitly shows the list of
security actions available on this message (e.g. decrypt, show signature
details, import certificate, etc). The most important action is marked by the
bold font style. If you click the left mouse key on this security button, this
important action is executed. If the message has more than one important
action, the left mouse key then invokes the pop-up menu to give the user
choice: which of the important actions to perform.
[*] If a message has several PGP keys, the pop-up menu for the security button
did contain several _Import PGP key_ items, and the user might have an
impression that The Bat! did create duplicate pop-up items , because of a bug.
In fact, each of these items did relate to a respective PGP key. Now The Bat!
uses explicit numbering _Import PGP key 1_, _Import PGP key 2_, to show that
these items will import the appropriate key.
[-] Attaching files and other file open and file save dialogs didn't work under
Windows 95/98/ME.
[-] The Bat! didn't start if the registry was write-protected and it was not
associated as an e-mail client in Windows.
[-] (#0006493) When signing a message using MS Crypto API and the device has a
PIN code, it was

Hello Mike,

I'm not too crazy about the default header color,

Agree. I personally 'hate' bluish colours and even more so if using a
gradient. I've already changed it for header pane but have not found a
way to do the same for the new message list tab bar of for the status
bar at the bottom of main window.

Thanks God that I can still use my 'yellowish' icons for the folder
tree.

What's new in 4.0.0.2

2007-12-22 Thread Maxim Masiutin

New Folder Tabs Interface

Folder Tabs
interface is completely reworked in order to provide a new way to access
various groups of folders and messages.

The new Folder
Favourite sets allow to keep
some specific folders and addresses together in a single list.

Address
History tab in the Folder Tabs to keep track of people one is exchanging
messages with.

Address History

You may
setup the Address History to keep track of people you are messaging with. This
way, you may quickly find messages from a particular person,
know when you or she/he wrote you last time, etc. The setup wizard collects
initial information from your existing message base, so you can start using the
Address History right away. When you enable the Address History, you may access
the list of recorded correspondents at the Addresses tab of the
folder pane in the main program's window.

Modern Look

The main
windows of the program have modern look:

·
The
tabs has new navigation controls;

·
Headers
and free space in windows have nice gradient background;

·
Buttons
in the header filed also look much nicer because they also support gradients;

·
Removed
unnecessary borders around graphic components, that helps to avoids visual
clutter;

·
The
account section of the status bar has it's
own customisable popup menu. The status bar has also
an option to show the account log or have it hidden.

URL Manager for Retrieval
of HTML Images in The Background

The Bat! now shows images in HTML messages referenced by http
protocol. Noting the fact that this opportunity has been abused by data “phishers”, The Bat! Introduces
sophisticated URL Manager to control the retrieval of messages not by folder or
addressee, but by particular hosts or URLs.

Easier Support and
Maintenance

The Bat! now sets  %EMAIL%
environment variable to its mail directory (where mail accounts and address
books are kept on disk). You can now type %EMAIL% in the address location of Windows
Explorer to quickly to The Bat! mail directory. This
significantly simplifies technical support: the user is easily able to locate
the mail directory right from Windows Explorer, regardless whether this
directory in “Program Files” or “User’s data” folder, even if the user doesn’t
exactly know where the mail directory actually is

Capitalization of The Addresses’ Name

The first
character is of the adressee’s name is automatically
capitalized if the recipient is specified by e-mail only. For example, if you
specify only [EMAIL PROTECTED] in the To: line of a
new message, it will now put Hello Stefan, in the message text, and
not Hello stefan, as before. This is
because of the new algorithm of %TOFName and related
macros.

Advanced Image Viewer

The
internal image viewer allows to view all attached
images in selected messages, navigating between images. It supports rotate, advanced
resize and zoom algorithms and full screen mode. It now also supports  JPEG images with 4-component colour schemes (CMYK and YCCK). Such JPEG files can also displayed
as embedded images of HTML messages.

Improved Speed

Message
list sorting by From, To or Subject column
is now five times faster. The Bat! should also consume
less memory because of fixed memory leaks.

Support of TNEF Format

Some
attachments in a message forwarded from Outlook were not
visible nor accessible from TB, because Outlook uses its own (TNEF)
format for encapsulating attachments. These messages did contain winmail.dat or
message.att file rather than the actually attached files.

The Bat! currently support extraction of regular files. TNEF can also
include nested binary (Outlook IMessage) messages,
Outlook meeting requests, Outlook delivery reports, and so on. Such binary Outlook
objects are not yet extracted

Smart Security Buttons

The buttons
that appear in the header panel when you see a PGP or S/MIME message now display
multiple properties of a message. For example, when a message is signed and
encrypted, you will see a single button that combine both “signature” and
“encryption” images.

The menu of
this button works smarter: it shows the whole list of security actions available
on this message (e.g. decrypt, show signature details, import certificate,
etc). The most important action is marked by the bold font style. If you click
the left mouse key on this security button, this important action is executed.
If the message has more than one important action, the left mouse key then
invokes the pop-up menu to give the user choice: which of the important actions
to perform.

Hi Maxim.

I'd like to make one minor suggestion in this regard.

IMO the tab navigational controls might be more convenient to the user if they were on the right side.

If user is clicking along msg tabs, for example, it would be from left to right so when user gets to last tab on right side, it would make sense to click the directional arrow to continue revealing new tabs.

But I guess the reverse argument could be made for going backwards. Nevertheless, I think it's worth a look.

It seems weird after so many years of being left justified.

agree, I wrote to Stef about this too, The Bat! left-alligned counters

URL Manager for Retrieval of HTML Images in The Background

The Bat! now shows images in HTML messages referenced by http
protocol. Noting the fact that this opportunity has been abused by
data “phishers”, The Bat! Introduces sophisticated URL Manager to
control the retrieval of messages not by folder or addressee, but by
 particular hosts or URLs.

It looks like once you have Allowed/Blocked a URL the only option is to
Block/Allow it. The Remove button doesn't seem to do anything.

Not unexpected, but nevertheless interesting: One of the URLs the

URL, sending a unique ID. So I blocked that URL, and thank you for the
option! This is very clear and easy to use.

Where can I edit the blocked/allowed URLs?

Can I also add incomplete URLs for blocking/allowing? For example, I
want to block everything that comes from the server containing
adserver.com but allow anything that has www.lufthansa in the URL

You may setup the Address History to keep track of people you are messaging
with. This way, you may quickly find messages from a particular person, know
when you or she/he wrote you last time, etc. The setup wizard collects initial
information from your existing message base, so you can start using the Address
History right away. When you enable the Address History, you may access the
list of recorded correspondents at the Addresses tab of the folder pane in
the main program's window.

1.) I noticed that when I use the Unread tab, the Account name is now shown.
Hurray! However, it is on the very right, and I would prefer
it on the left, before the name of the folder. I couldn't find a way to switch
the order. Is there any?

2.) I played with Address History. Without folder tabs, I could find no way to
go back to showing the account tree again, the only way was
to exit TB! and restart. Esc should work here. With folder tabs shown, I could
just click on the All folder.

3.) I noticed that the Menu Navigator is gone. RIP or WIP?

4.) Are you working on the HTML editor?
