Resize it to a smaller size by dragging a corner vertex. Enable crop via right mouse button Crop the image by dragging a corner vertex to an easily recognizable position. Hit Enter key. Resulting picture is not what was cropped before. It's different with PNGs. With PNG files the contents of the picture changes to all white; this could be picture specific, though...
