No more absurd than the suggestion that folks are paying M$ $300+ for
a support incident. The point is that more than 20% of the operating
systems currently in use are Win 9x which is more than 200 times as
many as the 1% suggested.

Agreed. Win9x support ended a long time ago. In my opinion all
applications on Windows should drop support of these versions for
good. Just imagine how much code of 10mb thebat.exe file is just to
support older systems, which are used by 1% of the world.

you might be wrong about that percentage. I know that my parents who
are in their 80s aren't going to upgrade their computer just to run
XP.

What percentage of people are still using dialup and not broadband? I
would think lots of those people would still be satisfied with 9x as
well.

I saw some recent statistics regarding operating system usage:

XP = 38.2%
2K = 35.4%
NT =  6.9%
98 = 13.9%
ME =  3.4%
95 =  1.0%
Macs, Linux, etc. make up the balance

Close to 27% for these systems seems a whole lot more than 1% to me.

I do not have the original documentation so I do not remember the
source. I cannot vouch for the accuracy but I believe it was for
desktops. I also saw some recent stats that stated in the Fortune 500
XP was only 20% and that 15-20% of the systems still run 98. I have
more customers running 98SE than all other systems combined. 2K is
second and XP is a distant 3rd.

I meant that MS dropped support for the old OS' in most of their
applications by now. You can not installed Outlook2003 on a W9x based
computer.

I didn't mean to say that support for the old OS' should be removed from
TB. Supporting older systems is the strength of the alternatives to the
mainstream stuff. But one can't deny the problems to maintain code for both
platforms.
